Oklahoma State's AD had some very candid comments about Travis Ford and his coaching tenure. I had no idea that Oklahoma St. gave Ford a 10 year deal. Most AD's publicly support a guy or say nothing. This AD essentially admits that the deal was a mistake. My favorite quote: "I thought we had a good young coach." The article is below.

I'm pretty sure there is a "mega-booster" associated withteh OSU program. Isn't in the guy that owns the big trucking company. Cant think of the name, but the bright yellow trucks and trailers. I thought I heard that he essentially bankrolls the BBall team. A buyout is only as big as the wallet it's coming from.

Actually, he has one of the most awesome, unforgettable names there is: T. Boone Pickens. If that doesn't scream southern swindler sleezeball I'm really not sure what does. I believe he was in the oil business though, which is also just part of the entire cliche real-life cartoon character he is.

T. Boone Pickens is a Great American.
Nobody seriously listened to the "Pickens Plan", and we just went out and spent a trillion dollar stimulus. What do we have to show for that. Pickens was talking about converting to Natural Gas in 2008. He was ahead of his time. Had we invested in his direction, we would be in a much better place. Today the United States is the #1 producer of Natural Gas. Our brilliant elites in Washington would have crashed this economy into a Depression if it wasn't for the fracking revolution.

I'm surprised people there are surprised about the tenure of Travis Ford. He never led UMass to the NCAA tournament and was like the 12th choice for OSU after they canned Sutton. Why on earth did they give him a Charlie Weiss contract is beyond me.

Boone Pickens? Doesn't he bankroll most of Oklahoma in general?

Yes, and I love the fact that they cant do anything about it unless a booster steps up and ponies up the 3 MM buyout.

The way I understood the article was that the school did not have the option for a buyout. The $3 million buyout would be paid by Ford if he wanted to leave and go somewhere else. Therefore the school is stuck with Ford until he either decides to leave or until the contract is up in 5 years. This might be the worst coaches contract in the history of college basketball, maybe all sports.

A buyout simply means a negotiated fee they could pay if they terminated the contract prior to it's end date. Even without a buyout, they can simply pay him everything that he's due contractually and tell him to take a hike. It's not a buyout if you use teh strict definition of buyout, but they CAN get rid of him..

Yeah -- you can fire him...you just have to keep paying him. Just like every other coach's contract.
