View Full Version : Bob Knight......YIKES!

I know its going to be a really tough conversation for someone at ESPN to have with Bob Knight that he isn't making any sense in most of his commentary, and that he may have dementia, but someone is going to have to do it. He is literally is so confused at times about things the other announcers are saying. He doesn't know the score most the time, he gets the score confused thinking the teams points are opposite to what they really are and because of that makes really confused comments. He constantly confuses the shot and game clocks.
How much longer can ESPN allow him to announce? It has to be uncomfortable for the other announcers with him. I'm sure they don't want to correct him on air and make him look like a fool but should they let him ramble on with incorrect/incoherent information?
You would think someone in his family would convince him maybe it is time to retire, but I'm sure that's not easy either. Its like family who has to take away their parent or grandparent's car because they clearly aren't safe to drive anymore but the parent or grandparent has no idea, so they are complete shocked an caught off guard.
Long rant/post but Bob Knight has been really hard to listen to in games, really for the last two years. You really start to feel bad for him, honestly.

I was feeling the same way listening to Marv Albert call NCAA Tournament games.

yes, but his analyses is still top shelf. Always been hard to listrn to. I seriously doubt he took his broadcast skills to serious.

That's the thing it's really not. Every once in a while he says something that's good and makes sense but most of the time it is incoherent babble that's makes everyone uncomfortable. It's not his broadcast skills at all, it's his cognitive skills. His broadcasting skills have never been good but he made up for it in analysis. For the last two years both have been terrible.

He sounds drunk, but it's worse than that. Drunk people that are otherwise knowledgable make some sense some of the time. Knight seemingly never does.

Dick Vitale has certainly become a caricature of himself, but at least he's aware of games scores, etc.. I'm personally not a fan, but he's still better than Knight.
Bob Knight is hands down the worst broadcaster that ESPN employs. He's a pompous jerk that has the ability of a fourth grader.

This is interesting as I thought the same on Knight. He has always been rough to listent but I was watching a very recnet game w/ my son and Told him, "I think Bobby is losing it."
Then I saw a video clip w/ him during the NCCA tournament when he visited a Wichita State practice and I was shocked how fragile Knight looked; moving very slowly.

I beg your pardon. Sir Charles is one of the best out there. He is a pleasure to listen too, and he doesn't BS around with his commentary.

Love him or hate him - Charles is in the entertainment business and he knows it. I enjoy that there doesn't seem to be anything he's afraid to say! (Even if it may on occasion be way out there...) I can't help but constantly associate him with that golf swing which makes me laugh, and at the same time makes me far more uncomfortable than Knight does.

Agreed. Knight just isn't the worst at ESPN, I think he is the worst college hoops commentator out there period.

It's easier to avoid Digger though. Just don't watch their pregame show. But if there is a game you are watching that Knight is commentating not much you can do other than hit mute.

No doubt he's bad as well. But I still think the "losing it" factor causes Knight to take the cake.

I heard a longer one on the radio but cant find it on video. That would have been great. I am still confused how his view was blocked though? I guess floor seats to the right or left of them where when people stood and they were looking that way their view was obscured?

Unfortunate fact of the matter is that there are fewer and fewer quality guys out there to do games. There is a seemingly never ending shortage of color guys and hot chicks to roam the sidelines but smart, unbiased guys for analysis aren't out there. Bilas, who was one of the last really now just spouts off at how smart he is and how everything he says should be implemented by the NCAA and in between those he says how great the ACC is or whatever team'de'jour ESPN tells him is.

Here's another video (http://ftw.usatoday.com/2015/02/bobby-knight-screams-at-smu-fans-to-sit-down) (with another, similar, incident on it). Sounds like they either aren't in the front row, or their view is obstructed when the play moves toward the right side basket.

I have no problem with this. As an Official Scorer for 16 years at the D1 Jucco level, frequently had to ask players to stay down and coaches to stay in the box so that the scorer's table could do their jobs. I'm sure that's all Big Bob was saying. :-)

Yeah I understand that but Bob Knight cant be yelling at people while live on air. Get a production assistant or someone to do it or take your mic off. Mike Patrick is trying to announce and Bob Knight is screaming!

I haven't laughed that hard in a while. I was actually watching the game, but didn't have the sound on. That's the greatest moment in the history of broadcasting.
You simply can't take a guy off the air who yells at the fans while the ball is in play.
It made me feel bad for him. That has to be some dementia manifesting. Hope his family knows when it's time to talk to him.

Anyone else notice Dickie V is sort of being shuffled to the background also. Bilas replaced Dickie V on some of the big ACC games this year. They got rid of Digger last year. A changing of the guard, perhaps ? Knight was not cut out to be a tv commentator.

Vitale actually did more SEC games this year, including the SEC Tournament this season.

Yep, and didn't do any of the Duke v. UNC games. ESPN/ABC has also done the same on the football side putting Musberger on the SEC Network games in favor of Chris Fowler as the #1 guy on the primetime ABC game.

I watched beginning of the NIT game. The camera went to the announcers right before tip w/ their last minute comments and Bob is sipping on a coffee and it appeared he had no idea he was on camera or he knew and just didn't give a crap. Either way it was awkard! Bob seems ot be losing it a bit.
