the prodigal son returns. He just posted on facebook that xavier offered him a spot and he accepted. Unless he is joking this is a amazing addition to the staff

That would be a cruel April Fools joke. What he did in his career at X is incredible, and could be someone the players could relate to. Experience is a big deal, and he's someone that's worn the X jersey, and knows what it means to be playing for Xavier.

He confirmed it's not a joke. What a great hire. First class guy all the way
I love Stanley Burrell. Anyone who doesn't can eat it.

Now we'll have another champion in the locker room.

Anyone know what role he'll be taking on or what he has been upto the past couple years?
I assume if he's being hired into a coaching role that he has been coaching somewhere?

He's been playing overseas. :embarassed:

Hopefully he can help the team with his lock down defense. That is something they've been struggling with.

That's what I thought. I can't imagine he's being hired as an assistant then...

Why not? Former players become assistants all the time...?

Could be another graduate assistant ala Dante Jackson.

Yeah, but there are typically a couple steps in between being a player and an assistant at a high major school, namely being on a high major staff in a non-assistant role.

This. Would love to see him work his way up the rotation.

Correct. A lot of those times the step is playing professionally. He's got to be what? 28 years old? I would think he's pretty capable of coaching basketball at this level.

Do you have any examples of guys who have done this? I'm not trying to be a dick, but I really can't think of any former players who went straight to an assistants role.
Most I can think of start in other non-coaching roles like video coordinator, director of player development, etc.

This has to be a joke. He seems way too dedicated to becoming a good player in Europe to give it up at this point.

Europe is not all it's cracked up to be. For every guy like D Brown who from all indications has a great situation there are hundreds more stuck in crappy ones.
I've heard lots of guys have issues getting paid, terrible travel conditions, etc.

He just had a kid. He's probably at the point in his life where he doesn't want to be moving every six months, and wants something semi-permanent. I think he'll be a great coach, and motivator.

He got bounced around a bit lately. I think he changed teams at the beginning of the season, sat on the bench for too many games, and recently transferred to another team. Maybe between that experience and the baby, he's ready to come back. I imagine his family would love to have the baby closer. Also, the op didn't say he's coming on an as assistant coach, unless I'm confused about terminology and 'staff' means 'assistant coach.'

Last year on April Fool's, Stan posted on FB that he was leaving his German team for an Italian team: https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=260388824097791&id=198842796919061
I'm gonna assume this is another April Fool's joke by Stan.

Two things:
- Who's leaving the staff for there to be a spot for him?
- Stanley's said nothing about it on Twitter
I'm skeptical to say the least.

He certainly was not in a good situation in Turkey, but it appears to have gotten better with his new team in Israel. Last I checked, he was playing about 30 minutes a game and averaging more than 10 points per game. Just my impression from following him online, he seems to love playing and is very dedicated to working out and achieving all he can as a player. I would love to see him back at Xavier after his playing days.

As said already many times in this thread, just based on his tweets, I think he's way too dedicated to just give up at this point. He loves what he does and although he's bounced around this season, his last couple years have been very good.
That being said, if this wasn't an April Fools joke, I would be so pumped for this. Him and Dante both bring motivation but they do it different ways. Stan was a way better player and brings more toughness to the job. He would challenge a lot of players I would think and make them a lot better. His defense is bar none a lot of times and his IQ is really high. I couldn't imagine another former player I'd rather have come back.
But yes, wait till 4/2.
I hate it when legitimate big news breaks on April Fool's Day. Like Blueitt's unfortunate change of heart.

Nuts?
Wasn't me...but it smells like bullshit.
If he is joining the staff, don't you think we would have heard about where the opening on the staff is coming from? You can't just add coaches to your staff, there is only a certain number of people allowed. I think we lose Dante Jackson as the Graduate Assistant, but I don't see The Hammer going back to school and becoming a GA at this point in his life. He has to be what, 28 years old?

As of this morning, he's re-tweeting tweets about it. Also thanks Mack for the opportunity - with a wink at the end of it.

I just heard that Stan is not getting the new job on the X staff. They hired some guy named Sidd Finch instead. I don't know much about him other than he once had a tryout with the Mets in the 80's.

Sidd was the Man.
He's a pitcher, part yogi and part recluse. Impressively liberated from our opulent life-style, Sidd's deciding about yoga—and his future in baseball (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1119283/)

BTW, 87, have you ever read the first letter in each word in the slug for the Sidd story?

I believe it's just the off season. He'll be back in Europe next year.
