Discussing with a couple friends about the ways Miller and Matta left. Tried to look up some old articles but didn't find many.
Who left the worst taste in your mouth when they left and why.

Anyone have quotes/articles with what they both said prior to leaving?

Matta for me.

Sean's hurt more though because I think we all really felt like he had considered the job and turned down a top program to stay at X. Then he changed his mind.

Thad more just snuck out in the night.

Wouldn't you prefer Thad's disappearing act over Miller coming back then changing his mind? Im not sure who I dislike more

I think you could tell it was a tough decision for Miller and that he really did love X. With Thad it was a quick 3 years and out after one good run. I dont think it was a tough decision for him. I think he jumped at the thought of leaving for the Big 10.

This.

Sean was torn and had decided to stay until Cal and Matta got on the phone with him and talked him out of Cincinnati.

I think it's time we all move on and give up reliving this over and over and over again. No one was more upset than me, but seriously. We're starting to sound pitiful.

I'm just ecstatic the lexus ran out of gas once again in the Elite 8.

As for both leaving. I don't mind Thad anymore but I would take Thad's way over Sean going back and forth and leaving with what would have been an unbelievable Xavier team with DBrown staying.

I do love seeing them both lose. Thad was only here for 3 years and he left 10 years ago. I'm just over him.

To you and Ladymuskie, Im over both of them too. I enjoy watching them lose but this thread wasnt meant to cry about it. I was simply bored, discussing with friends, and hadn't been on the board when any of this was discussed in the past so I thought I would ask

This happened? I hadn't heard that.

As a fan, I'm over it. However, the enduring memory for me was Thad's departure and seeing Anthony Myles finding out from Channel 5 when they stuck a camera/microphone in his face on campus. The poor guy had no idea and flat out asked Channel 5 "Coach isn't leaving! What are talking about?"

I understand interviewing/hiring is delicate in all industries but these coaches that don't talk to their players/staffs/recruits before leaving are dogs.

They both suck.

Long time reader, first time poster. For me this one is easy. When Matta sent his wife to Father Hoffs funeral so that he could go on a recruiting trip, I vowed to always root against his team. I realize we all make decisions that we later wish we could change so I hope this is one he wishes he could change but I doubt it.

THREAD: MATTA OR MILLER

Ya, in a close race I pick Matta. Miller left the cubbord full. Matta was a carpetbagger who would have achieved nothing at X without the players willing the team through The Run.

Easy for me - Matta. Can't stand him at all.

I don't see what is so hard about this for coaches. All you have to do as a coach is say something like "I owe it to my family to check out any and all opportunities that are out there." Leave it at that and say nothing more. People would respect that. I have no idea why some of them immediately say "I'm not going anywhere!" when approached about the subject of possibly leaving.

Matta. Easy choice.

If I was given a choice of 1 coach for the next 20 years it would be Sean Miller. I had no problem with his departure, and understand that it is a difficult decision.

Matta on the other hand, he butchered his method.

I agree with this. I'd take Miller over Matta long term. As of this morning, however, my concern is not adding Mack to the list!

Yep. I was at the Butler County Alumni event when someone asked Matta if he was talking to Ohio State as had been rumored. He was very emphatic that he was not a candidate, had not talked to them, and wasn't going anywhere. Within a day or two, he was being introduced in Columbus.

Granted, there's no easy way to answer that kind of question. He could have handled it a little better, though.

Agreed. X should have never let Miller do that press conference though.

Couldn't care less how either of them left. Those 2 coaches gave Xavier some of the best seasons we ever had. I remember those elite 8's and league championships far more than how they left. We owe both of those men some credit for where we are today, and I will always root for Sean Miller.

Matta left his alma mater after one year to come to Xavier. I'm not sure why any of us would expect more allegiance to Xavier from Matta when he ditched Butler after one year. Otherwise, I agree with MOR.

This is "batting practice."
1) Whatshisname, and the then AD at osu, had meetings at Sunken Lunken Airport which Whatshisname repeatedly denied ever happen. Later, after he went to osu, the OSU AD confirmed that they had met at Sunken Lunken.
2) In the evening before going to C-Bus to sign a contract at the home of the osu prez, Whatshisname told the then beat writer from the Enquirer that he "wasn't going anywhere" ... "that he had never talked with anyone from ous about the job." Then, the next morning he drove to C-Bus, met with the osu prez, signed a contract and drove back to Cincinnati.
3) Lets review. A basketball coach, never talks to anyone at another school about its vacant job, then wakes up one morning, drives 107 miles to the home of that school's prez, signs what has to be a detailed contract worked out by his agent, and then wants the world to think he never lied.
4) Yes, he was a carpetbagger. He jumped from his alma mater after one year ("this is my dream job he said when getting the Buter post") and had two sneak interviews after his first year at Xavier (Pitt and Illinois) and like another said, he couldn't even come to Father Hoff's funeral, or Skip's.
Now, Sean first said no to Arizona, and there was nothing sneaky about his talking to them, with XU's permission. Yes, he did change his mind, but that came when Arizona added one million dollars a year to the pot.
I can't count the ways Matta "blew" games. Still doing it.
