View Full Version : They solved their problem this way

For a few weeks now I was pondering the Committee's problem with the play-in site and ud creeping into the field, and I were telling others, the Committee will never, ever, allow ud a play-in slot and thus home team advantage, and I think this is how they avoided it this year.

They put Xavier there (and truthfully I don't think any Wolfpack fan thinks that is right) and seeded ud in the 11th spot.
Now, the facts are, Xavier finished third to ud's 6th in respective conferences, noting the Big East is ranked 4th in power and the A-10 is ranked 6th had the edge in non-conference SOS 38 to 67 and 43-66 SOS in conference play.

OK, I know the Seton Hall complaints, but try this. ud lost (count 'em) three times to the third place finisher in the A-10 who had a 51 RPI.

So, me thinks, faced with seeding Xavier 11th, or making ud a "home team" ... they took the easy was out.

I was thinking this was probably going to happen before it actually did. If they made UD play in UD for the opening round, whoever was pitted against them would be yelling foul. Maybe them hosting the play in games was a good thing for their team.

If they got that benefit because of avoiding a "home team" situation, then Dayton should absolutely not be allowed to host the play in games every year. If they want to have the 16 seeds play there, fine, because UD will never get a 16 seed. But it needs to rotate, especially because Dayton seems to be in the bubble discussion with a possibility to play in the first four almost every season.

What should happen is have a backup site for just this situation - you could easily have an arena that could host the first four games whenever UD is slotted to play in them.

Or, just do the play in games in 2 arenas on the same night. Have the games on Tuesday, one in a location somewhere in the East, and the other in the West so you can get the natural time zone difference and fit all 4 games in one night with just minimal overlap which is good for TV.

Then the winners move into the "real" bracket to play on Friday. this allows for maximum time between games which assists logistics for teams and fans alike.

Then if you ever had an issue like teh one with Dayton, you could just ship them out to the other site.

As the tournament expands (I bet there will be at least one more play-in game in the next five years), multiple venues is probably exactly what they're going to do.

Dayton was 41st on the seed list. They were actually in front of Nebraska. it's my understanding that they were #40th and would have been a #10 seed had Saint Joe's not beaten VCU. They weren't one of the last four teams in the field. If they had been, I have no doubt the committee would have put them in Dayton. What do they care?? If anyone would have been swapped with Dayton down to the First Four, it would have been Iowa. Both Iowa and Tennessee are on the #11 line. They're ahead of us.

The thing that really irritates me about our seed is....Does anyone believe for one instance that if we were still in the Atlantic 10, we would have come in 7th place????? All six A-10 teams in the tourney are seeded above us. I just can't get there no way no how.
