A long, long time ago, (31 years), on a Tuesday in March at UD Arena, a Xavier Musketeers team played in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 22 years. This began the rise of Xavier basketball to the elite status it holds today.

Tomorrow, on another Tuesday in March at UD Arena, Xavier will play in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament again.

This will be the beginning of the Golden Age of Xavier basketball. Better conference, better players, better facilities, and a better outlook. If the next 30 years continue to ramp up the way they did after 1983, then the next 30 years will be filled with season after season of amazing tournament and regular season success.

Hold on, people. It's going to be awesome!

Go X!

I remember being at that game. Alcorn St. right? And a loss. Xavier has come a long way.

I was at that game vs. Alcorn State. It was exciting to be there and while we left disappointed, you could feel the change in the program from the Tay Baker years to that season. You could just sense the impending growth and I'm getting that same feeling for the program's growth again. Enjoy the ride folks. It will not always be smooth but it will be fun!

I'm kind of ready for us to stop talking about "how far we've come" since the Tay Baker days or whatever. That was 40 years ago. Yeah, I would have hoped we've evolved since that time.

Ready for us to start talking about how far we've come since the Skip Prosser and Thad Matta days.

I'm ready for a Final Four, goddamnit.

10 years ago today, Xavier had been to one Sweet Sixteen in program history. One.

Look how far we've come in ten years...

Two elite eights and three Sweet Sixteens in addition. Pretty amazing.

Did you experience those days? You would understand if you did. Also, think about how far we dropped to get to those days. First Ohio university to win a national championship of any kind. (58 NIT) Simply put, the hiring of Staak was the beginning of the climb back to prominence and the Alcorn State game was the first national recognition from the days when X was a national player in the 50's.

X lost to Alcorn St. then Alcorn St. went and gave Ewing and Georgetown all they wanted.

That was the year I accepted a job at XU, leaving Washington, DC to move to Cincinnati. I was a big college hoops fan, even back then, and I seem to recall that Alcorn had some player known as the "little magician" (or something like that) and stopping him was the key to beating Alcorn. Xavier apparently did not, and so they lost. But the ship was pulling out of the port, and the Muskie flagship has been moving forward ever since.
