I think this is a good matchup for Reynolds. I hope he stays out of foul trouble and brings his rebounding game. NC State is supposedly not that good of a defense rebounding team but Warren is an amazing offensive rebounder. Hopefully the Staintrain can play some valuable minutes.

Just have to limit Warren, he's an animal, it depends which NC State team shows up though, they seem very inconsistent.

Oh yeah, I know that, we are inconsistent too. I'm just hoping Dee plays in his element, and we don't look like the team against Seton Hall. This is a good match up for us, I think we can win this one.

“I’ve watched them a few times, and they’re a very talented group,” Gottfried said. “Christon is one of the better players in the country. It’s going to be a tough game. It will be a home-game atmosphere for them, but we’ve played a lot on the road this year, so, so be it.”

A few tidbits from the NC State board.

http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=178&f=2515&t=12743637

"I watched them a couple times earlier in the season & they lost both times.
Nothing outstanding that I can recall about them.
Sean Miller made them - w/o him they have fallen."

"It's also pretty much a home game for them."

"They have several guys who can hit the three. They're not overpowering inside."

Lol wrong on all three counts. My favorite is the claim that Xavier has a number of shooters but not much of an inside presence. Um, what?

Also, the logic of judging a team only by when they lost...when they won far more games. Brilliant lol.

And this is why coaches need to protect athletes from themselves. I hope coach Mack is smart enough to make sure Stain is not put in a position to further injure himself.

The person who should really be inspired by this quote is Jalen Reynolds. If he can continue to give good, productive minutes and keep himself in good defensive position, it will give the coaching staff more flexibility with how to best use Stainbrook.

Stainbrook is "all in" -- but Jalen can help shoulder the weight for him.

If you watch that video, what comes through the loudest of all the impressions is the absolute "no quit" of every Xavier player.
They never give up. They leave everything on the floor...just look at Burrell's last game moment.

That's what Stainbrook is doing. What Muskies before have done. Leaving everything on the floor.

Anyone. Anywhere. Anytime.

I know Warren's NBA position would technically be a "3/4" - but who will he typically guard? Hoping he normally guards the 4 - Zeke has been doing a good job of drawing fouls. We're not going to flat out stop this guy - our best defense might be hoping he picks up an early foul or two.

Pack fan here. Grats to you guys on making the field. I know we were all thrilled to make it ourselves. I think it's interesting that Warren and Christon were roommates at Brewster, I wonder how that'll play out.

You definitely don't have to worry about us beating you by going 15/25 from 3P range, however we have done a decent job of finding other ways to beat the zone. Syracuse has a tough zone and we did pretty well against that. I'll be interested to see how you guys defend Warren, I figure that facing McDermott 3 times this year probably helps with preparation. I think they're both elite scorers, but still have fairly different games. With Warren it's all motor. He does most of his scoring without a set play being run for him.

^Regarding who Warren typically guards, he usually takes the opposing 3. He is actually a very underrated defender. He was 4th in the ACC in steals, and holds his man below his average. CJ Fair was first team All-ACC for Syracuse and Warren held him to 3-16 from the field for 9 points on Saturday. And one of those FGs was a breakaway dunk off a turnover. In the first game we played them, Warren held Fair to 5-16 shooting for 11 points.

I'd say good luck, but you'd know I don't mean it. But hopefully nobody gets injured and then if you do (unfortunately) win, good luck in all the rest of your games.

Oh, and did I read correctly that it may not be an overwhelmingly home-game atmosphere for Xavier in Dayton? Maybe the Dayton fans will come out and cheer on Archie's alma mater, I guess.

A note about UD fans for tomorrow night. It's not so much that they will be cheering for NC State, but that they will be cheering against Xavier. Let me put it this way...If Hitler came back to life and put together a Nazi basketball team and that team happened to face Xavier in a play-in game at UD Arena, Flyer fans would still root against Xavier.

I would actually equate it to something I witnessed a few years back when Xavier played Notre Dame in Greensboro. UNC fans bought all session tickets simply so they could go root for Lehigh against Duke in the night session. It actually made for a pretty great environment.

To be fair it wasn't just UNC fans it was ALL fans. Duke is one of the most hated schools in CBB but of course you don't see a 15 upset a 2 very often. With nothing invested everyone there but Duke fans will root for the underdog.

Oh absolutely, only reason I say UNC specifically is because, at least from what I recall, at least 30% (maybe more) of the building was wearing baby blue for a session with Duke/Lehigh and X/ND. Just illustrating that not only Dayton fans buy tickets simply to root against a rival, not that that makes it reasonable.

I don't consider them to be that comparable. Douggie is a much better shooter. Warrren is better in the paint. They both move extremely well without the ball. Warren is a better defender. We would switch or go over screens for Doug and Creighton. I imagine we will hedge or go under for Warren and NC State.

Doug is national POY. It's hard to be better than him, but Warren will challenge us in ways we haven't seen this year.

Xavier
03-17-2014, 06:09 PM
The best part of the BE this year was the different teams we played. St. Johns was Athletic, Defensive and rebound type team. And we wont see a better offensive team than Creighton. Warren is no McDermott.

03-17-2014, 07:22 PM
I'm guessing someone mentioned this elsewhere, but Cincinnati beat NC State this year 68-57 and held Warren to 13 points.
It was a typical low-scoring UC game, but things were neck and neck until UC really turned on the heavy pressure.

Now that was much earlier in the season, but I think if we can turn up our defense, we can keep things in check. In that game it was Turner, an LSU transfer, who got four fouls and that hurt them when he was on the bench.

That's true, but it also happens to be the handiwork of a particular official, Jamie Luckie. If you were to look game by game, Warren averaged a little over 4 fouls in each of the games Luckie reffed, compared to around 2.5 in all the other games. We typically get a raw deal when it comes to foul calls in league play, but it ends up getting called pretty even once we escape the ACC and get into NCAA tourney play. It's quite refreshing.

Interesting. Funny how that stuff works. It's the most maddening part of basketball and the reason my son (who played at a pretty high level) calls it "a flawed sport". No other sport, in my opinion, depends so much on the refs, their prejudices and emotions (more so certainly at the high school level, but it's shaky up to the NBA - ref's are not the show).

Well, I didn't look at the official crew for each game, but I do recall some of those games being early in the season, so it couldn't all be from the conference play. Still, having 10 games with 4 or more fouls tells me that XU should be trying to trick him into fouling.

Two actual game-related thoughts I have this afternoon...

I really hope the good Dee Davis shows up tonight. He'll be needed. A couple rainbow threes and a low turnover game from him would make me very happy.

Also, is tonight the night Myles and/or Farr break out of their slumps and contribute something? X can't go 6 deep like they have been recently.

No need for a firstrow stream for any of the NCAA games

You can watch them all free, and legally, at NCAA.com from your computer

Or if you have a tablet or smartphone, search for the March Madness app in the Android Google Play Store or Apple App store. Also free.

And better picture quality than your average firstrow stream

I think Albany got down by 19 in the first half in the game before this. Then with about a minute to go, it was tied. Anything can happen, it's March Madness!

State had a game earlier this year when we were up like 17 points on Pittsburgh in the first half and we ended up losing by double digits.
