Gang, can you help me out? I'm on a flight and can't get into the Chat Room. Can someone post on this or antoher thread bracket info as it comes in as it pertains to X and Big East teams. Other random thoughts appreciated. I'll see brackets on-line so don't need them all, but on-line is usually a bit delayed vs. TV, at least in the past. Thanks

MarkGormley
03-16-2014, 07:08 PM
Just scratching the surface but it seems that NCState struggles against teams who have strong guards that score most of the points. That should be in our favor if Dee and JMart show up. Also, TJ Warren is their stud. Averages 25 pts/game and a bunch of rebounds.
mohr5150
03-16-2014, 07:15 PM
15 of their 21 wins were against the RPI 101+ While we had 11 of 20 We have common opponents in UC, Wake, and Tennessee. They went 2-2 against that group while we went 3-1. They went 1-7 vs the top 25 while we went 2-4. Their worse loss was against Wake, while ours is the horrible USC. They aren't a good free throw shooting team, and they don't seem to hit the three very well, although Ralston Turner jacks them up at a very high rate. On paper, this looks like a very winnable game. Let's go out and put the big old middle finger to the selection committee for disrespecting the Big East by having the third best team have the play the seventh best team in the ACC.

Martin should feel as comfortable as you can get facing TJ Warren, guarding Dougie 3 times all year. Warren can hit the 3, but his mid range game is what reminds me of Dougie.
Also, if Xavier plays well, the play-in game isn't all that bad. Think of the NCAA basketball eyes watching this games (along with the Iowa/Tenn game). A win here and against STL will really propel Xavier into next year. Of course, a L'Ville win would be incredible…but I'm getting ahead. If Christon, Martin and Stainbrook play like they SHOULD…this can be a showcase for Xavier moving into 2015.
As disappointing as this is, it's a step in the right direction. We are trending up. Last year was the exception for well chronicled reasons. This year we have a chance and our guys will get some important big game experience. Hope we can make it more of a home environment than NC State fans on short notice. That ends my glass half full speech...

Well, if we're that good we should advance. I watched every game and I have no idea how good we are. Sometimes we look great and sometimes... not so much. Our huge volatility in level of play is what got us here. Let's hope the good X shows up in crunch time.

For years I have read this site and enjoyed reading all of the back and forth that all you people do over the years. I always sat back and laughed at you guys while getting a little pertinent information regarding Xavier basketball. I now feel the urge to post on here because of all the complaining about Xavier's draw for this tournament. People you do realize that we ARE dancing right? I can't believe all the negative posting that is going on about this. Get real people last year we didn't even make the freakin NIT and now we are back in the show.
You do realize how good our draw is right? The best thing that could have happened to Xavier was Providence winning the Big East. No doubt about it the took our spot in the second round. Thing is I am a realist and know that Xavier could never beat this North Carolina team. Instead we get a draw against two teams that are offensively inept. Yeah Warren is a beast but NC State is a much worse version of Creighton and them along with St. Louis is about as good as it gets as far as match-ups go. I think the round of 32 more than maximizes this teams potential and would be an awesome season from the dumpster fire that was last year.
Caveat
03-16-2014, 10:40 PM
With Stainbrook's knee ailing, I can't imagine how playing an extra game is a "good" thing for Xavier.
And I really don't think there's been a lot of "complaining". Certainly not in the mainstream. We were concerned about this possibility. It happened. Now we move forward. As i stated earlier, it's progress from last year, and a step toward our bright future.

I don't care if we played any of the other 6 seeds. Winning one game is easier than winning 2. End of discussion. And it would have been more rest for Stainbrook.
Playing a road game at UD not better than playing on Thursday. Also, I'm not complaining about being "in". Much better than the NIT.

It's not just the rest for Matt, I was worried someone might hurt themselves getting him off the floor after he got gassed! It seemed the whole team showed up to help. One or two guys alone might find themselves on the injury list.

Welcome. We're not ogres, although sometimes it appears to be.
I would have preferred not to have to play another game this quickly and then have to go play two more days later then 2 more days after that, but it's Tournament time and guess what. You have to be tough and suck it up. Hopefully Stain's knee will let him play a solid 20-25 minutes.
If we have to do this, though, we could not have asked for a more favorable first 2 game draw. If we're good enough we'll win.

The play-in game is not the tournament. You're playing for the right to have a seed and be in the tournament.
Ask the NCAA about that. First Round. Also check with VCU or Wichita State about playing in the First Round.

Teams that were ahead of us on the S-curve that shouldn't have just completely piss me off:
BYU
Iowa (I know they beat us head-to-head, but they have completely tanked down the stretch)
Kansas State
Nebraska
Stanford and Arizona State are probably more on our level then where we were placed. Total bullshit.
Lots of chalk in the picks and seedings, with a few exceptions. BYU was 31 RPI and got a 10- probably because of Injury. Iowa is a play in like us. KState was really treated kindly 51 RPI and a 9 seed? Uhhhhh. Nebraska was just behind us at 48 RPI and got an 11 having to play Baylor. Stanford was 41 RPI, AZ State 44. They both got 10's. We were given what we got, I believe because of Matt's injury and our proximity to the dump. When you drop into the 40's you are playing with fire.
The small schools got no credit. So Miss was a 33 RPI and Toledo was 38- both left out. Missouri at 49 and Minnesota at 50 were left out as was SMU and Florida State at 53 & 54 respectively. Obviously, Ken Pomeroy's ratings got the finger flipped at them by the Committee.
For all of the statements that RPI means hardly anything, the resulting field picks and seedings belie that.

We get a full NCAA game credit for this game. Yeah, it counts.

Wichita State never played in that round.

Okay lets get one thing straight Tuesday is the 1st round. If you win you move to the second round. It counts all the same it is not a play-in game anymore. I think in another thread someone mentioned about how major teams don't play on Tuesday but as I recall USC, California, Iowa, Tennessee, N.C State, South Florida (as Big East member), Clemson and so on would disagree. These are legitimate NCAA tournament games involving teams that are in the top 20 percent of college basketball.

That elitist "we shouldn't play in the play-in game" talk is absolutely ridiculous. UK would've taken that spot in a heartbeat last season.. All it means is a possibility at a little more basketball which I'm all for. We also get a time slot to ourselves so a lot of the nation will just be focused on our game and get to check out some of our really good players that not many know about.

It never was a play in game. It was officially the Opening Round game before.
Even when it was the two weakest #16 seeds, it was considered a full blown NCAA Tournament game. The rules that applied for all other tournament games applied to that one in every aspect, and it was officially classified as a championship event.
The games on Tuesday and Wednesday are definitely tournament games. They may not feel the same as the round of 64 games, but then again the round of 64 doesn't feel the same as the Sweet Sixteen, but it's still the tournament.

The marketing department can call it whatever the hell they want. The real "first round" is the field of 64.

This is just plain silly. remember last year? Xavier is in the damn NCAA and that is that. The only thing that matters now is win and advance. Period. Ask SMU or any of the other snubbed. Just win and keep playing until you're out. For a first time membership in the competition that is the Big East this is a good, no make that very good season. Just think win and be proud of this Xavier team.

The SMU grad down the hall from me would love to be playing in the NCAA tournament in Dayton on Tuesday.

What about when the field was 48? Were the first round games "play-ins" since not everyone played on the first and second days?
What about when it was only 32 teams? You know, when first played there were only 8 teams. I mean if you really want to be a purist about it, why not go all in?

Yeah didn't UCLA used to get the first 2 rounds at home? And it wasn't 6 games either..( I am sure Seth Davis will tell me as he incessantly pimps his book.)

Looks like the Midwest has a lot of familiar faces.
And a damn boatload of good teams.
