When AD's express their thanks for all he has done, but we feel its time to go in a different direction."
So it is with Louis Orr at Bowling Green,a really good classy guy, and a really good basketball coach with Xavier ties .. former assistant.
Who else gets the door in the coming weeks?
Matt Painter? After nine years he is not in good shape at Purdue. This season he "blamed on himself" for bad coaching and bad recruiting and having selfish players. Last place in the Big Ten for a "basketball school" is not a place you want to be, and his comments after losing to Northwestern actually makes it easier for the AD to "go in another direction."
Then there's KevinWillard at Seton Hall. In four years he's .500 with the second consecutive losing season, and one post season (NIT) appearance. Suggestion Kevin .. Do Not Lose To Butler Tonight or your A "may go in another direction.
Trent Johnson at TCU is a real mystery to me. He started out as a "host coach" at UNR but flamed out at LSU and now TCU. A guy with almost zero personality, the Horny Toads may have had enough.
And then there is Ollie at DePaul. He worked ud and then Clemson into a Million dollar bonus to sign on at DePaul and a seven year $14 million contract. Speculation in Chicago is that year 6 and seven are not fully (or at all) guaranteed. If true, he may be gone, but if not true, DePaul might find paying Ollie $4 million over the next two years, and a new coach a wad of money in face of trying to raise funds for a new arena just too much.
Why in the world would DePaul have paid Ollie $2 million a year?
Another question. Has ND tired of Mike Brey, and has Mike Brey looked at his "new conference" and wonder who the hell is he supposed to beat night in and night out? .... Duke, UNC, Syracuse, NCS, Clemson, Virgnia. The ACC is good for ND's football, but a march to Mt Calvary for the basketball program.
I'm sure there are other school's soon to "go in another direction" but who????

In regards to Oliver Purnell. DePAul's God awful AD has already come out in the press and said he's safe for year 5. Here in Chicago there is a lot of rumors that the majority of the team wants to transfer. The belief is that the buyout will be substantially less after year 5. All kinds of crazy rumors that Mark Aguirre is the coach in waiting. Basically, OP was hired because everyone else turned the job down.

DePaul will be a bottom feeder until they clean house in their athletic dept. Starting with the AD.

Painter and Pernell go nowhere. .both have tightwad ADs who won't pay them to not coach. Brey maybe but ND doesn't really care about bball, they're still counting last seasons football $$$$. Our Lady of the $ (ND), cares about little else.

I wouldn't rule out a Bzdelik return. They're mediocre as hell, but they're not a BAD team. They've got a legitimate shot at winnning two ACC Tournament games as well.

Kevin Willard won't be fired considering the recruiting class he has coming in. I'm interested in what will happen with Brian Gregory at Georgia Tech. Bobinski knows full well how mediocre of a coach he is so it wouldn't surprise me to see him fired. An interesting replacement option would be Archie Miller.

Two bad hires don't equal one good hire.

What did Gregory do?

Found a worse AD at GaTech than Bobo and fooled him into thinking he wasn't a terrible basketball coach.

If you know, or even speculation, who else turned the job down. If Jean was trolling for a basketball coach with a Million dollar bonus and seven years at $2 per, I would think the list would be a very long list. Isn't $2 mil what Sean got? Whatever, I am also curious about your remarks about Jean. DePaul athletics is top level in all other sports, and she has won approval to raise the $$$ for a new "Cintas." That would go a very long, long way in curing their recruiting woes, along with the Fox1 money.

DePaul is top level in all sports except the only one that matters? Not good.

DePaul fans I know would toss the AD in a heartbeat if they only got to choose one between Oliver and Jean to go.

Genetics, baby. Daddy and big bro have the coaching gene, so de facto Archie does too. Not saying it's logical, but coaching hires reflect emotion in the face of logic. I say Archie's leaving dayton in a Lexus within a month of his team's season's ending.

They moved Cintas 9 miles from campus? Weird, when I was last there it was right across the street from a lot of the dorms and apartments.

DePaul is far from top level in all other sports. They have a decent women's team that will usually make the tournament, but are not serious contenders for the national championship. That being said, Doug Bruno was the women's head coach long before Jeanie was ever AD. So the success of the women's program has little to do with her. Read the Chicago papers and the DePAul message boards. The one thing everyone agrees on is she needs to be gone before Purnell is fired or else she will be left hire the coach. Something she has failed at twice with Jerry Wainwright and Purnell.

The rumors back when they were looking for Wainwright's replacement was that a lot of coaches didn't even want to interview with her because they did not like the way Wainwright was fired mid-season. Guys like Jamie Dixon faked interest in order to get an extension from Pitt, Ben Howland listened because his seat was getting hot at UCLA, Gilespie wasn't interested, neither was Barbee. She also secretly extended Wainwright after he took Dave Leito's players to the NIT. Then she couldn't fire JW because of the extension. Then she way over paid for a guy who had never won an NCAA game.

After all, does the state of the rest of the athletic program matter when the only revenue generating sport is this bad?

The arena is not a done deal. Ground breaking is not scheduled for another year and by then the mayor who wanted it could be out of office. It is not a popular idea around Chicago for a private school to be getting public funds for an arena. Especially such a loser.

There was a recent report in Crain's Chicago that DePaul was inflating ticket sales 3x the amount that actually make into the arena. Basically the school buys tickets for all the students and reports 6,000-7,000 fans when really only 1,900 were showing up per game per the Allstate Arena.

I could go on.

Gregory is safe for now, GT is still paying Hewitt and Gregory received a one year extension last year.

Finished 6th, 7th and 11th in the conference in 3 years.
Surely that warrants a promotion and upgrade.

Feel pretty certain that Painter is safe at Purdue. He's relatively cheap for the Big Ten and he's an alum. It'll take another really bad year next year to get him fired there. (No comment on a scenario where Purdue finds a cheaper alum to coach).

Tony Barbee was just fired from Auburn. They lost their tournament game less than an hour ago. That will be an awkward trip back with the team.

Auburn getting Pearl. Tough job but probably a guy that can turn it around.

It's been awhile since Auburn seemingly cared about basketball but they definitely made an early coaching hire splash.

Ah, I remember sitting at ESPNZone NYNY in Vegas watching his Cornell team go down gallantly to Kentucky on one screen while watching Butler beat Syracuse on the other. That was so close to being one of the better nights of my life.

Back to the original point, I bet he gets a job at an Ivy or Patriot school and does well again.

Yes, his style works much better at that level.
