It was March 11. 2004. Poor pitiful mid major Xavier University traveled up to that awful arena in dayton to face the Big Bad Hawks of St Joes, undefeated and #1 in the nation..
A little trio named Sato Chalmers and Myles put up 65 points between them and polished off the evil Hawks 87-67.
Bye Bye Birdies!

Which three will step up to wave bye bye to the wildcats tonight?

Got to be the most drunk I've ever been at a game. That was a fun one.

That was one of the best performances I have ever seen in person. I remember when we were still doubled up on their score in the second half. I think the last time that happened was 72-36.

Think about that. We are playing for our NCAA Lives. We are playing the #1 team in the nation, and they are undefeated. I remember when we were up 72-36, and it was glorious. Just F'in glorious. One of the best games that I have ever seen, and I have seen us beat the #1 team in the nation in person 3 times. It should have been 4 times if it wasn't for tOSU flagrant foul, and the other #1 was double overtime against and undefeated "REFUSE TO LOSE" UMass team which we could have iced with free throws. We had free throws that could have won that game, but no. Give me two plays and I would have witnessed a streak of 5 consecutive times that we played #1 and won. Actually I think had we best Ohio State that would have been the record. I don't think any program has met the #1 team and won 4 straight times. Sometimes I wonder if we actually have the record, because we beat 3 straight #1s, and I saw each and every one of them. Not sure how many programs have ever done that.

My team is Xavier, the Dragon Killer. I can't wait until we do it again.

The day of that game, my dad called me at 10:00 and asked if I wanted to go. I said sure. A co-worker went to St. Joe's, I told her where I was going, and she rather smugly asked me to grab her tickets for the semifinal at UD Arena on my way out. Being a top notch guy, I agreed. Those tickets were never purchased.

I hope someday X can have a team that is as good as that 04 team was. That was a lot of fun.

74-37. I remember that quite vividly and VERY fondly!

Filthy Conservative, Kahns and I were reminiscing about that game last night. Noon game at the commode. After Xavier had laid waste to the Hawks, I walk out into the concourse to see a wild-eyed, somewhat inebriated Snipe foaming at the mouth and screaming incoherently something about "Final Four Baby!" I immediately purchased more beer for the group to keep the foamin' goin' .

Good times.

Need to start another Run next week. Better late than never. We can still rattle off 10 more wins and win the NC.

That game started a two - three week stretch where I thought Lionel Chalmers was the best guard, if not the best player, in the country.
The man put that team on his back and willed them to the Regional Final. Granted he had help but he was unconscious for that time frame.

I actually missed that game. Before the era of smartphones, I was traveling for work that day I found out we had won because I ran into the St. Joes team at the airport when I landed at home. I wish I had a video of me putting two and two together and sprinting for the airport bar to find out the score.

I was in the Cintas training room getting treatment for a leg injury. I watched with Jody Jenike and the volleyball team. If I couldn't be at the game, that was probably the second best place to be.

The 2008 team was just as good. It just happened to be one of the most top-heavy years in college basketball. All four 1 seeds were loaded with NBA talent. That UCLA team? Kevin Love and Russell Westbrook are two of the better players in the NBA right now. Darren Collison and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute are NBA starters. Josh Shipp is successful over in Turkey. And that's just the starting lineup. The entire bench is either in the D-League or playing abroad.

UCLA was probably the worst 1 seed too.. Those four teams were absolutely stacked.

The '08 team was a lot better than the '04 squad. The '04 team just didn't piss down their collective legs in the Elite Eight the way the '08 team did.

Wasn't that the year when all 1 seeds made it to the final 4?

UCLA was so good, they weren't winning that game. Still, I wish they had made a few more bunnies to make it a respectable margin.

That UCLA team could have been had. Western Kentucky gave them fits for about 35 minutes in the Sweet Sixteen. They beat an 8 seed by a couple of points in the second round. Xavier was just awful in that game.

The Duke '04 team was really talented, too (four guys STILL in the NBA a decade later). But our guys fought their asses off and gave them a helluva game.

I'm with Go on this one. From an individual talent standpoint, that UCLA team in hindsight was certainly gifted considering the professional careers of its players, but the Bruins were the weakest of the 1 seeds that year, and were certainly a team Xavier could have defeated.

As it were, Xavier played horrendously, folded about 10 minutes in, while UCLA coasted to probably its most impressive game of the tournament, much to the surprise of its own disinterested fanbase.

Sorry, I should clarify: UCLA was so good and they brought their A game that day.

No, they didn't do anything that special. Xavier was just really, really bad. Really bad. It would have taken a big, big effort to win that game, no doubt. But if Xavier doesn't bring their D+ game, it's unlikely to be the blowout that it was.
