A couple of quotes from Shabazz Napier from last night:
Napier on why they've shot so well here. "I don't think it's the building, I think it's how Memphis plays defense."
Shabazz Napier on Kilpatrick: "He cares so much about that MVP. ... I don't care about it. If he wants it, he can have it."
I think I found a new favorite non-Xavier player.

whiteyxu

The refs blew a similarly horrible call in the SLU-SBU game. Jordair Jett got fouled by 2 guys on his way to the basket, and then the Bonnies hit a wide open 3 while on a 5-4 advantage. I know it's pretty common for refs to swallow their whistles at the end of a game, but those are two plays that completely change the games if they are called correctly.

Not by the numbers.
A) They finished 6th in the A-10.
B) Their SOS is weak.
C) Pomeroy going in was 52..10 below us and 3 below Providence.
D) Sagarin rating is 56.
Not overly good, especially when the Committee looks inside the team sheets and sees that St. Joes won all 3 games against them. Their only hope is if UMess loses tonight.

If the selection committee decides that the A10 is only getting five bids, Dayton could end up getting the short end of the stick. SLU, VCU, GW and UMass are all locks and I think SJU just punched their ticket after going 3-0 against the Cryers this season. If there is one team from the A10 who gets left out, it will be UD.

UD has done exactly what the committee says teams are supposed to do. They played away from home, and won away from home. They have wins against Gonzaga who's in the field, Saint Louis who's in the field and Cal who is on the bubble away from home. They won a total of ten games away from home. When you look at the selections of the last three years, especially when it comes to the bubble teams, wins away from home is clearly the biggest point of emphasis. No one else on the bubble has done as much away from home as Dayton. I really don't even think they're on the bubble.

Pablo's Brother
03-14-2014, 05:30 PM
I was driving back from CVG (saw the game last night at MSG) and was listening to the last seconds of the UD game on WHIO. I said a little prayer to my brother (Pablo): "C'mon Brian, please help UD lose." I thought: "Man, that is not really Christian, praying for them to lose." Then, I said "I don't care, I want them to lose bad and so would my brother."
I then listened to the homers on WHIO describe the push-off, Galloway hitting the three, the no call and then three minutes of non-stop CRYING/blaming the refs about "what a terrible way to lose." FREAKIN' GLORIOUS!
I so hope UD does not get in to the NCAA's. I don't care if it was true - and the refs screwed them - this is why UD is UD! Thanks to the Academy, Pablo and of course Xavier going to the NCAA's while UD cries (again) about the refs and subsequent NIT bid.
GLORIOUS, I tell you GLORIOUS!

St. Joe's being an NCAA team is laughable as well. They really aren't very good and their resume is weak. They are going to be absolute garbage next year.
Here are the teams that were seeded #10, #11 and #12 last year, and what their records were away from home. Essentially, these are teams that ended up inside the bubble.
-Oklahoma 8-10
-Minnesota - 6-11
-Akron - 11-6
-Iowa State - 7-11
-Belmont - 12-7 (the fact that they were seeded two lines better than the final at-large teams indicates they would have gotten in without winning the conference tournament
-Ole Miss - 11-8
-Boise State - 7-10
-La Salle - 11-8
-Boise State - 7-10
-Colorado - 9-9
-Bucknell - 13-5
-Cal - 10-7
-Cincinnati - 9-7
-Middle Tennessee - 12-6
-Saint Mary's - 12-6
Notice a pattern?? With the exception of Cincinnati, they all played more than half their games away from home, and they all managed to win a decent amount of them.
So, when I see Saint Joe's at 11-5, with 8 true road wins, and another game away from home coming tomorrow, I think they fit the profile of the kinds of teams the committee has been taking. You may think they're a joke, and I won't disagree with you, but I still think the committee will take them.
Same with Dayton, who is 10-6, and has some really good wins away from home.
The trend is blatantly obvious. Whether you think it should happen or not doesn't really matter because we don't get a vote. The committee has a fetish for those types of profiles.
We're 6-9 away from home, BTW, and our wins aren't as good as they need to be. I think we REALLY need to win tonight.

Dozens are packed into the Don Haskins Center to watch the CUSA Championship game.
This conference is such a tire fire. It's a sixteen team bloated monstrosity. The TV deal is a joke with a lot of games being on CSS, which almost no one gets. They can't get a decent deal for the tournament, so if you want to watch the opening rounds and quarterfinals (which no one does) you have to pay for it. Just putting it on YouTube for free would be a better idea because at least a few more people would be likely to watch.
They put the tournament at the least centrally located school, they play the game at 9:30am, and will probably get crushed in the ratings by Saturday morning cartoons. And, they wonder why the league isn't doing well.
What's unfortunate is that LA Tech is a pretty good team, and Tulsa has been playing well, so it will actually likely be a good game between two teams who could conceivably get out of hte round of 64. But, no one is watching, and I don't blame them.

I love these type of games. I have such a huge soft spot for the so-called "low-majors." People laugh because they'll come over during the season, and instead of watching the power conferences I'm tuned in to the Patriot or America East or Summit League games. There are less than 2000 people there, but it's a fantastic atmosphere in an arena that isn't much bigger than an auxiliary gym.

Well, I admire your enthusiasm for Xavier, but not that you don't seem to be all that smart, so I guess that makes us even.
Actually, I've wanted Fox to put the semis and championship game on their flagship network, and saying that people will compare the league to the old Big East and overlook how good the league really is, for a lot longer than just the past 24 hrs. I don't know how wanting more exposure on a free to air network and not liking always being compared to the old Big East disqualifies me from being a real fan.
I also feel Xavier would have been much better off had they won more games away from home. Most people seem to get mad whenever I say that. I'm not sure why you forgot to mention that.
I never said UD was a #7 seed, but I do think they're safely in. I also think the Atlantic Ten is getting six teams. We'll see if I'm right tomorrow.

I don't necessarily disagree on the road results, and in fact wished they had played at least one more road game OOC, and am definitely on record of that way back. But X has enough positives on their resume that there is zero point (unless you have an agenda) to go looking for reasons to keep them.
Glad you liked MY list.

I love Xavier, but I'm with Brew. Having watched the Big Ten Tourney today, and CBS's interview with the committee member, I'm worried. He made it clear that the conference tournament play was important this year because so many teams are on the cusp, share similar resumes, and that winning that one more game in the conference tourney gives the committee one more chance to see you play, gives you one more chance to beat a top RPI team, etc. I think there are going to be a lot of disappointed teams tomorrow, and I just hope and pray Xavier isn't one of them. I won't be surprised if we don't see our name on a line tomorrow night.

Toledo also wasn't the overall first place team, so the committee is far less likely to forgive a loss in the conference tournament.
I don't know if the committee would take Belmont or not, but I think they'd like them more than Toledo. I could make a case for Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss if I really had to. LA Tech was without their best player for some of their losses (but Belmont was without two starters for some of theirs, so...), and Southern Miss did win a big road game against North Dakota State, but it's still a very hard sell.

Go, help me understand something basic. (I probably have a mental block on it)
If 4 of the bottom conference winners on the S curve deal fight it out in Dayton for two 16 seeds, and the last four at large teams fight it out for two 12 seeds, then winning a conference still can leave you in Dayton (the bottom 4 playing for a 16). Why don't they have all the Dayton games for the bottom conference winners? So the 8 teams on the bottom of that S curve deal would be in Dayton playing for the four 16 seeds?

why do it in Dayton?? Why not have the #16v#17 seeds in the cities where the #1 seeds are playing??
Or, why not just play it at campus sites, so the #16 seeds can get a home game, and the few people who actually give a shit about the game, could actually easily get to the game??

Just sort of how the deal evolved. First it was one play in game between the two worst 16 seeds to accommodate the WAC/Mountain West split that added a new auto bid without taking away any at-large bids. Then they talked about expanding the Tournament to add more at-large teams (the expansion would have been to 96), and the current set-up was a compromise. Three extra teams in the Tournament (from 65 to 68), but not at the expense of forcing all the lowest seeded teams to play themselves in. So one more playin game for 16 seeds, but then you added the two playin games for the four worst at-large teams. Good compromise, in my opinion, because if the Tournament was still 64 teams, in theory all 4 of the at-large play-in game participants would have been left out altogether. Since they're benefitting from the expansion, those 4 teams probably should have to take the burden of the play-in game "solution", too.

I really don't like anything about the opening round. I'm okay with the field being at 68, but it's just the logistics of it that suck. To get all those teams to Dayton (or anywhere) on 48 hrs notice is tough, and it's even harder for fans to get there. The opening round doesn't feel like the NCAA Tournament. At least not the years I was at it.
If we were to have an opening round, I would actually prefer it if there were a line of #17 seeds, and they just played the #16 seeds either at the four regional sites where the #1 seeds are, or on the home courts of the #16 seeds.

In a lot of cases I think road wins were the only thing the committee looked at. All of the overseeded teams seem to have a ton of them. Or, at the very least, weren't punished when they lost on the road.
SLU - 12 road/neutral wins. #5 line. They crapped out at the end of the year, but since all but one of the losses were away from home, I guess that didn't matter.
UMass - 13 R/N wins - #6 line. No real good wins, just a lot of okay ones away from home.
I guess nine road wins was good enough to land BYU on the #10 line, and their bad losses were deemphasized because they were played on the road. BYU played 19 games away from home, and that seems to be the only thing the committee really cared about.
Gonzaga's profile doesn't look anything like a #8 seed, but they played 18 games away from home and won 12 of them. The fact that most of them were against crap WCC teams doesn't seem to matter.
Dayton, who some are surprised to see in the field, won ten games away from home. They had three crap losses, but two were on the road, so I guess those were overlooked.
SFA, who really belongs on the #15 line, is up on the #12. I think they are perhaps the most overseeded team in the field, especially when you consider that the difference between a #15 and a #12 is usually a lot more than a #5 and a #8. Way more, actually. They had a bunch of crap road wins. To be fair, they had equally as many crappy home wins.
All of the overseeded teams seem to all have the same thing in common. They won more games away from home than the teams that didn't. I'm all for rewarding teams that go out and play, but at the same time I don't think you should just completely ignore what a team does at home. I think that they do. Most of the underseeded teams didn't appear to get credit for good home wins. I wonder if we were given any consideration for beating Creighton. I'm glad the Shootout was at a neutral site. Had we been at home, I wonder if we'd even be in the field.
Green Bay beat Virginia, who was a #1 seed. They also nearly beat Wisconsin. I know they were close, but no one else on the bubble had a win against a #1 seed. Did the committee give them any credit for it, or did they just count their road wins and decide they didn't do quite enough??
Providence beat Creighton twice, and is on the #11 line. That's the same line as the First Four. Would they have even made it had they lost to Creighton in the title game. If beating Creighton on a neutral floor only gets you to a #11 seed, what if they didn't have that??
I realize people think of me as a hater because of how I complained about our lack of road games and road wins all year long. But, I'm really not. It's just that I had a VEERRRRYY strong feeling that there were certain members of this committee that would only look at what teams did on the road. If you want my personal opinion, I think that is a very inadequate way to fully assess a team. I do value road performance, but not exclusively like some on this committee seem to. For the longest time, I did NOT think we were getting in. I know I said that a lot, but wasn't trying to stir up trouble. The reason I was saying it was because I legitimately didn't think we would. It wasn't until late Saturday night when all the bid stealers were gone, and when the only teams that were left were teams with equally piss poor road performances, that I thought we'd get in, and even then I wasn't sure.
The reason I thought the Atlantic Ten would do well was because with this committee, they had a huge advantage. The bottom of the league stinks, so it meant a large quantity of winnable road games. That, and the fact that they scheduled winnable out of conference road games (in many cases because that was all they could schedule) made me think they would be overvalued. Believe it or not, had Saint Bonaventure found a way to win the tournament, I think they would have still gotten the six teams that they did, plus Saint Bona, so seven in total.
For those of you that think I'm an opinionated blowhard asshole, you're wrong. I'm really just an asshole. An asshole who's damn happy that Xavier is in the tournament!!

So the A10 followed the MWC formula from last year.
Someday the committee might address that.

OTR, you really seem like a caricature of an obsessed fan with this post. It's really over the top. How old are you buddy?
Lol yeah I know it's juvenile but I hate that school with a passion. It all started when I was a kid and watching X up the Dump during the Tyrone Hill years and Negale Knight. Some DBag Dayton fan turned around and ripped up my blue Pom Pom. I was probably 9 at the time. I have decided ever since that day to hate that program till the day I die. I will never forget or forgive that crappy University for my torn up Pom Pom.
38 btw, lol

The Patriot League Tournament tips off Monday night.
The Saturday of the Elite Eight is the day that I begin to miss college basketball. There were 330 out of 351 teams that were still playing when Go started this thread, and in theory could still win it all. Now there are eight (well, 16 I guess if you count the four teams left in the CIT and NIT). For the first time since the second Saturday in November, there are no games on in the afternoon. I don't know what to do. I might have to resort to cleaning the house, or getting some work done, or exercising, or actually doing something productive.
I know March is the most exciting part of the year, but it's also a little like the last part of a great vacation. It's great, but it's almost over. I actually think the part of the season I like the best is November. You have the longest expanse of college basketball ahead of you, and you finally get to see a lot of these teams that you've read about and heard about actually play. There are countless exempt tournaments, so all kinds of teams are playing each other on equal terms.
Why does there have to be an offseason?? Oh well. I like college baseball as well. I actually don't mind football, but I'm really not a fan, and by the time November rolls around I'm really not even watching anymore. It's kind of funny because this is when most people are most in love with hoops, but to me it already kinda feels like it's over. :(

Sean O'Mara goes to the same high school that Kaminsky went to - Benet Academy.
Coming out of high school, Wisconsin was the only major program that offered him (Kaminsky) a scholly.
