Marquette had a chance to tie Xavier again at third place in the Big East standings today but lost to No. 8 Villanova, ensuring the Musketeers' sole roost on the rung.

Right now, the worst seed Xavier could get would be the 5th seed. Georgetown is 7-9 and likely a candidate for the 1st round and a 7 seed.

St. John's is 9-8; even if they win at Marquette, they would still lose any tiebreaker to Xavier.

For the 5th seed to take place, Marquette would have to win 2 games (one of which is against PC) to finish 11-7; PC would have a tiebreaker edge over Xavier by virtue of a sweep over Creighton (@ Creighton is the Friars' finale). Xavier, of course, would have to lose both remaining games for that seed to take place.

Xavier would win any tiebreaker over Marquette by virtue of their 1-1 record against Creighton (MU was swept by the Jays).

Xavier would win the tiebreaker over Providence IF the Friars have a loss at Creighton; at this point Xavier's record over St. John's (2-0) would supercede PC (1-1).

There is also a scenario where 4 teams could tie at 10-8, although that would involve St. John's winning at Marquette, Marquette winning at Providence, and Providence winning at Creighton (almost a 1000-1 shot). If that happens, Xavier would win that tiebreak by group record:

Xavier 4-2
St. John's 3-3
Marquette 3-3
Providence 2-4

I feel bad for Butler . They make DePaul look like a good team.

I'd prefer for St. John's to escape the #6 position. It would kind of suck to get the #3 seed and be stuck playing St. John's in the Garden in the QF.
