My father, Thomas Schneider, graduated from Xavier in 1968, and at 11:30 we were supposed to watch Xavier take on Georgetown at the Verizon Center with my younger brother and brother-in-law. As much as it crushes me to say, the Lord led my father to a better place early this past Thursday morning.
The reason I'm saying thank you to Xavier Nation is that Xavier Nation is what carried my father and made him happy, it also created a bond between me, him and my brother to where conversations found no end. Whether it was talking about incoming recruits, jumping off of both feet, certain posters of message boards, hatred for Dayton, the X's & O's of each game or our bigger hatred for Dayton, Xavier gave us a chance to bond and keep conversation going. Neither my brother nor I attended Xavier, (we only had huge Cincy 5-way parties when Xavier was randomly on TV against Evansville in the MCC days!) we have only been to Cincinnati twice in our lives and a third trip was supposed to happen for the Creighton game on March 1st. Last year was what was going to be the first of many father and sons trips to the Queen City. While it will be the first and only, the joy of seeing my father who hadn't been on campus in almost 15 years gloat about his alma mater, and knock back several adult beverages at Dana's made the first and only a great time.
My father cared dearly for his family, his alma mater, the Knights of Columbus and Xavier basketball. When he was in hospice on Tuesday afternoon, I told my mother that he was going to make it through Wednesday night to feel one more Xavier game on TV. When the final horn sounded on Wednesday and I hadn't received a call that the time had come, I could only smile.
Tomorrow my brother and I will be at the Verizon Center to watch Xavier mangle the Hoyas, and while my father won't be sitting in his seat, he'll be enjoying the game from the rafters. Thanks again Xavier Nation for being such a big part of my father's life. God Bless.

My condolences to you and your family - and thanks for joining the group to share your thoughts. The father-son relationship you describe hits home with many here, including me. Although the deepest roots of our bond were planted long ago, my father will be the first to concur that something unique developed between us that centered around attending Xavier basketball games at the Cincinnati Gardens. After reading these boards over the years, I've learned that the bond is indeed unique, but not exclusive to my father and me. We all may have different routines (ours is The Ritual), but common among us is Xavier basketball at the core. And I don't think there's a single son or father here that would disagree that this bond we share transcends the wins and losses. Especially after hearing your story, I know that every game I attend with him is a win.

I'm very sorry to hear about your father, and I'm hopeful that those memories you created together will bring you peace and comfort.

My condolences to you and your family Jay. Welcome to the board. You'll find many here just like you.

Your dad will always be with you in your heart no matter where you go or what you do. It will never change. Always remember that the seemingly insurmountable pain that grabs you will ease (but never completely). The times that hurt the most are really the truest indicators of your love for your dad and his for you. My mom passed almost 17 years ago and I still love her just as much today as I always have. And so it is and will be with you and your dad.

Enjoy the game and every game going forward. Your dad is watching right there with you.

All thoughts, prayers and sympathies to you and your family Jay. We all know that you Dad is just across the veil in a good place. I'm sure he'll be guiding shots into the basket for the Muskies today. God Bless.

My prayers to you and your family. What a beautiful eulogy for your dad. At least we know there's one more Xavier angel on our side to help the team out and tip in some of those lucky shots!
