Farr needs to work on his feet movement over the summer a lot. He'll be a real weapon once he's more than just a spot-up shooter and offensive rebounder.

Stenger was in over Farr for a good majority of the last 12 mins of the game... Stenger is a stud on D, but struggles to even make layups. I was wondering why he was in there so much at the end.

14 three point attempts, with 3 or 4 being desperation attempts is not many at all.

IDK. Maybe it's because Farr isn't looking to be inside enough. His 2 attempts aren't going to help us. That might be our guards not looking for him enough or Stainbrook being given the play. But Philmore is at least trying. If Farr can't demand the touch, then we have to think about why he's out there.
Another thought, could Stenger be faster than Farr? SHU was pretty fast in that zone.

I don't disagree completely, but looking at the overall attempts they are too many if you aren't making them. You have to be looking for your best shots. If the outside shooters aren't hitting and the attempts by the inside players are lower (Farr, Stenger) then I say consider your offensive balance.

In my opinion this one is on the coaches. They were not ready to play and after a loss and a week to prepare that is disappointing. Flat is what they were. Not sure how that happens. They will have to find a way to win atleast three more on the road and not lose any more at home. Anything less than 11-7 in conference will be dicey.
Well, this team can't cry over today for too long. They play Villanova in a little over 48 hours. If they're pissed off enough, Monday can be another chance to prove themselves. That's one blessing about this conference, at least.

This isn't 1980. You HAVE to be able to take and make threes in today's game. You can't rely on shooting 2 pointers. There has to be a balance. 2 made threes for a college team is terrible.

Balance is what I was talking about. I don't care what year it is. Higher percentage shots are higher percentage shots. If these guys aren't hitting the threes, coach needs to be sure the bigs are getting more touches inside. Our two front line starters had 11 attempts.

I don't have any problem with sheer number of attempts. X is actually 314th in three point attempts per game in all of college basketball at 14.8. I do have a problem with the timing of some of them. Like Myles in transition or Dee without a single pass in the offensive set. When you don't shoot the three particularly well you can't be jacking them up early in the shot clock like they did today.
I can't think of someone to blame this one on. They came out very flat and never picked it up. I have to give it to SHU, they played us really well on D. Semaj can't be the only guard to contribute and that's what happened today.

02-01-2014, 02:57 PM
Chris Mack's postgame thoughts were rather revealing. He virtually called out Dee Davis on air. Basically, he said you can't always go for grand slams and he expects more from a veteran guard. Clearly in reference to the no-pass three at the end.
And I pose this as a serious question: Can you think of a worse FT shooter than Stenger? I legitimately can't.

Xavier is now 14-6 (5-3) with an RPI of 40. Currently they have two wins over tournament teams (Cincinnati and Tennessee) but the big loss to Tennessee kind of neutralizes the win. They now have two bad losses against USC and at home against Seton Hall.
These are the key games remaining: home against Villanova, Creighton and Providence and a road game against Villanova. Also need to avoid bad losses.
You guys think Xavier can recover??

They are actually 15-6, but whatever.
I wonder if they can recover. All of these teams are going to be gunning for better season position. MU and SHU are knocking on our door if we don't win these next couple.
They have the talent. They still seem to be adjusting to the defenses Big East teams are using on them.

Sorry, I was going by the RPI and they don't count the Abilene Christian game. Providence and Xavier seem the most likely to join Creighton and Villanova, so that heightens the match-ups between those two even more.

Confused why Mack only gave Martin 22 minutes when this team doesn't have many offensive options. Not sure why he gave so many minutes to Stenger. Like the guys hustle but he is not a guy who should be getting 13 minutes on this level.

I think he's trying to get Stenger back in the flow after being out so long. Could be helpful at the end of the year. And besides, he might be earning it in practice. But he's woeful on the offensive end.

My mama told me there'd be days like this. Xavier has to wake up and realize that there are no nights off in the Big East. There are no Fordhams, Duqesnes, St. Bonnies, LaSalles, etc in the Big East. Before this year, Seton Hall played against Pitt, Syracuse, UC, Louisville, in addition to the teams still in the league. They are not daunted by coming into a sold out Cintas Center. They have big, strong players who are used to the big stage. Are the the best BE team out there? No, but they are better than the cupcakes that used to waltz into the Cintas Center from the A-10.
Bottom line: X needs to bring their A-Game each and every night. If not, then more of what happened to them tonight will happen to them in the future.

Let's give Seton Hall some credit. They were well prepared for us. They took our transition game completely away, threw a match-up zone at us which we were ill prepared for, and really forced a huge amount of turnovers via off the ball steals. That said, Seton Hall seemed offensively challenged and we matched them at that step for step. For years, it seems to me, Xavier plays its best when they have balanced scoring. I listeded to the post game show and heard Semaj, Stainbrook, and Phillmore had 28 of our 32 points. That is not a recipe for success. We need others (Dee, Martin, Farr, Myles) to contribute offensively every game. Let's start with a win at Villanova on Monday which will quickly allow us to forget about the Seton Hall game.
