View Full Version : What about Stainbrook?

Much has been hashed about players transferring, Semaj going to the NBA and Mac's scholarship overload. Not wanting to add to the mystery, but is anybody concerned that Stainbrook might just opt for the NBA. I personally think that he has all the tools, not that he's a first rounder, or lottery pick, but I can see teams drafting him and placing him in the Development League. I hope not, because I think he is continuing to progress every week and could move up the draft ladder with another year.
Ditto Semaj. Look at how far he has come in a year. One more year could make him a high, if not, lottery pick.

No. He's going no where but X next year.

I know the Stainbrooks and talked with them before the Butler game. He's going to grad school next year and all in for a big year.

Semaj, I believe that we should enjoy him now, because as he continues to improve, he'll be gone. The kid is special, and his shot is now very pretty.

I wouldn't quite say that. If a Zeller can play in the NBA then I don't see what Stainbrook wouldn't at least get a look if he has a big senior year.

That's what I was thinking. I understand that some people generally ignore professional ball or what NBA front offices and GMs are looking for, so they assume a more linear trajectory between college and professional ball (see Semaj NBA threads), but that's just not the case. Stainbrook is the kind of guy that *might* get a look by an NBA team after he graduates. No way is it anything he would sacrifice college eligibility for, as he does not have much of a shot. Could you imagine him trying to guard Dwight Howard? Maybe that's unfair, as he's a challenge for NBA starters. Could you imagine him guarding any starting center in the league?

Never watch the NDL (no defense league)until there is just five minutes to play in seventh game of finals, and only then if I have an hour to kill. But I never say never as all pro sports are full of players observers say 'they will never play.'
Try Johnny Unitas ....

Ah, the old "never say never" defense. Well, I'm going to say with all confidence that there's no way in hell Stainbrook leaves early to enter the NBA draft. He is your classic "Maybe-I'll-get-lucky-after-I-graduate" college player. And no one drafts a player just to put him in the D-league. They might end up doing that after tryouts and team practices, but that's never the intent going in, because the D-league is nothing like the minors in baseball.

Actually Mack being a NBA coach is more realistic than Stain Train playing in the NBA next year. Yes he could be in the NBA but unless he went to the school of Parrish Casbier Stain Train will be a Muskie next year.

I thought this was going to be about more love for Stainbrook.......because the guy certainly deserves it. He is such a difference maker on the floor and our offense runs through him. He is such a smart player and can dish the rock. He has also been doing a nice job of finishing. I think his confidence is sky high and he knows he can play with anybody in this league. Add on his weight loss and the guy has made a life change where he can certainly earn some good money overseas.

The initial thought beginning this thread is based on the fact that the Matt (You Got Stained) Stainbrook is such a composed player. But leaving "early" to try the draft, it must be some type of national holiday where people pull each others' chains....because it aint, not not not, gonna happen. Love Stain, he brings a calmness to the offense that I haven't seen in, well, ever. Got a bit frustrated by Marquette, but I honestly couldn't ask for a better player to start at C for this team. Total package of intelligence and old school moves.

Oh yeah, complete support GladdenGuy's take.

The dude will undoubtedly make a good living playing basketball somewhere…even next year if he really wanted…but not in these United States.
Not next year, not the year after.

Thanks for playing along.

Pretty sure he said something along the lines that he needs to keep to getting better, get stronger and get more in shape to have a chance. I really really don't see it happening, but if he can become an NBA level talent during his time at X I'm all for it.

So to make it to the league, you just have to get better at basketball, get stronger, AND get in better shape? Did someone record this telecast for Matt???

I get what you're saying and I'm sure Matt will hear about it. LOL I thought of this thread too.

As I recall the announcer (guy who played at Duke I believe) said he thought Stainbrook had great natural talent for the NBA, but because the NBA shot clock makes the game so much faster he'd have to work on his conditioning to get up and down the floor faster and not get exhausted.

I guess anything is possible, but he'll really need to condition himself full time. There are plenty of slow big men in the NBA. I've seen a couple players really transform themselves once they became determined to go pro.

I have no doubt he will be payed to play basketball, just think it's a long shot for it to be in the NBA. Among the things already discussed, he'd have to really improve that jump shot. Not bad for now and Xavier, just has to be much better for the NBA.

He also will need to be more capable of defending out toward the perimeter or in the mid-range than he has been.

And the play-by-play guy immediately responded with "REALLY??!?", as did I. I hadn't seen this thread yet, which makes it even funnier. It almost makes me wonder if the announcers browsed this site before the game. Abaa Ababllblaabba also said he had never been to the Cintas Center, which surprised me to hear.

Abdelnaby was hosting their studio show the last couple of seasons, I don't know how many games he actually called onsite.

He was a pretty good player at Duke in the pre-Laettner era, as I recall. He was on that team that UNLV beat by 600 billion points in the NCAA title game.

I'm not sure if I'm surprised he hasn't been there, just that he said it. Part of an announcer's job is to seem as authoritative as possible.

It might have been because I was annoyed in general how Creighton biased they both were through the game.

At least ammtd34's error makes grammatical sense (since he forms the past tense of 'pay' by adding 'ed' to the present tense form of the word). Errors that don't make sense to me are ones like 'its' (the adjective) versus 'it's' (the contraction meaning 'it is') or using 'there,' they're,' and 'their' incorrectly.

nuts4xu

The only correct definition today of the word "payed" is a nautical reference to let out rope. The word "payed" was used in the bible interchangeably with the word "paid". But in today's English language, the word "payed" is an extremely rare word to use and is generally used incorrectly.

Word of advice....use the word "Paid" instead of "payed" in general and you won't be wrong.

That's embarrassing. You're right. I'll blame it on the iPad, because I'm a grammatical nut. I can't think of a reason I would have actually written "payed."

Me too. But to be clear, my earlier comment was never meant to imply that he can't or won't make it to the NBA. I think he has a chance (although he will have to overcome some physical limitations). I don't, however, think there is any realistic chance he leaves early to pursue those goals. If ever someone could use another year in college to demonstrate NBA potential it's Matt Stainbrook. And given the transformation he has made since he set foot on Victory Parkway, I sure as hell wouldn't bet against him.

Sometimes for me it's just a matter of my fingers hearing what my brain is thinking. I have been known to type "The Muskies barely one that game" or something equally stupid. Especially in the world of message boards, I'm not usually critical of those obvious mistakes. For some reason "payed" and "your" (instead of you're) always catch my eye and make my brain stop.

Anyway, as I said, really belongs in the pet peeve discussion, since I obviously knew what was meant.

Back to Stainbrook. He's good. I hope we have him as long as he continues to improve his game.
