View Full Version : Was that the Skip Prosser Classic tonight?

First off, great win. Pumped about that. But I did come away scratching my head a bit. Am I the only one that found it a bit strange that there wasn't a lot of focus on Coach Prosser tonight? Just seemed odd to me that it was the "Skip Prosser Classic" and the only time they mentioned his name was at halftime when they brought his mother onto the court (albeit very brief and then quickly moving onto the frisbee dogs) and then after the game for the trophy ceremony. And sure, there were logos on the court, but that was about it. Maybe I missed something (and I hope I did) or maybe it was on purpose. We arrived about 20 minutes before the game started and I was expecting some sort of tribute.

Sorry to complain, but I thought it was worth mentioning a worth a post. I think we all can agree that Coach Prosser was a great coach, even a better man, and meant so much to our program. But again, I just feel like something was missing. Some kind words and a montage of him on the big screen or even a moment of silence would've sufficed. Simply feel that X missed an opportunity.

The TV broadcast did more, but there should definitely have been something before the game within Cintas.

Yeah, I'm actually watching the game back now and they are definitely doing a nice job thus far.

Maybe a moment of silence would have been nice. I think playing the game is good in of itself though. There were a lot of articles written about the game, and more importantly about Skip. To me, that's what it is about, keeping him in the national spotlight. Xavier fans and Wake fans know how great he was and remember him.

And, honestly you are playing the game 10 times, I'm not sure you need a montage every game. It would get a bit redundant and probably tough for the family to go through.

I agree with everything you said except that last part. To see/hear a tribute to the man every other year wouldn't be redundant at all. Not to mention, there are thousands of fans who didn't go to the game two years ago. In the tenth and final year of the series, I can't see myself or many others rolling my eyes and saying, "Here we go again".

I felt the same during the game. The halftime ceremony with Skip's mother seemed a little too quick (also, she was wearing some Wake Forest colored clothing and she seemed to be chatting with their fans a lot). I would assume eventually both schools will have a banner with his name in rafters.

I thought they did a fine job on TV. Harder to do on site.

I agree that I thought that there would have been more of a tribute. Really? There couldn't have been a small video montage before the game started? I know the students are on winter break, but they could have had some communications major create one months ago. Its not like they would have had to wait to make something.

I was expecting a video tribute or something. Maybe the family wanted it low key.

I'm not sure what I expected at the game, but what I saw did seem to be less than I expected. I think in the 4th iteration of the game, a video tribute might have been too much. It was appropriate for the first time played at each others' arenas.

I did expect there to be something at halftime where some talked about what Coach Prosser meant to both schools, but I don't know.

There was a lot of discussion and remembrance done of Coach Prosser this week, which is what this game is supposed to invoke - a reflection on a man that we admired, and isn't that the entire point? I'm not sure that they need to tug on the heartstrings every game, but for most of us, that's already been done by the time the game starts.

First, off, great to see you and the family today, Pimp.

But I agree. Other than a very short halftime presentation, which no one saw because we were all on the concourse buying beers, there was nothing of note. There was the logos on the court, but nothing else. Very, very understated.

One primary scenario to be avoided is any one upmanship between XU and WF. Like 2 sets of grandparents showing affections for their favorite grandchild, one school cannot attempt to out shine the other in tributes to Skip. The series is intended as a joint venture. So naturally things are agreed to remain low key.

To me, scheduling time to honor Skip should be placed at the close of the game (TV be damned) with coaches/players/admin from both schools partaking Many fans would stick around and full attention directed to Skip's honor. When Skip died, WF and its fans were surprised that XU felt the loss so deeply; and in turn it seems XU may yet need to learn that WF held unique feelings toward Skip.

I'll put more credence in what Nancy and Jo Prosser thought about what X did for Skip, than any other opinion!

I didn't notice this while at the game. Yes, last time we had the video, and the concession stands sold Guiness, but neither of those is necessary.

How many other games on our home schedule are tied to the memory of somebody? The fact that it is the Skip Prosser Classic alone should make you think back on the wonderful things he meant for us. Then there is the traveling trophy, always something to play for. I think though, maybe the fans just needed some excuse to rise and cheer to his memory.

It may not be having his name on the court, or a banner up in the rafters or anything like that, but for at least the next 6 years we have a set day, a set game, when we all think of Skip. Had it just been a name on a court or a banner it would fade into the background.

Personally, I have one of those montages they sell in the local sports collectibles stores that has a panorama shot of the Cintas Center court, and under it pictures of Coaches Gillen, Prosser, and Miller. I've inserted the ticket stub from the first Skip Prosser Classic next to his picture. I have that in my office at work.
