Which of the following is the greatest Crosstown Victory in Xavier History?

<tbody>
1927-28
Xavier
29-25
Schmidt Fieldhouse

</tbody>

First game ever between Xavier and UC. This game was the dedication ceremony of Schmidt Fieldhouse. X won, and would not see UC again until 1942.

<tbody>
1996-97
Xavier
71-69
Shoemaker Center

</tbody>

The Cincinnati Bearcats were ranked #1 in the country and were largely considered frontrunners for the national championship by several media outlets, including Sports Illustrated. Xavier's Lenny Brown made a running one-hander at the buzzer to propel Xavier to a 71-69 win. Both teams made it to the NCAA Second Round. UC Bearcats are #1 in the Country, #2 in their own City (http://youtu.be/xydgOHauwbU).

<tbody>
1999-00
Xavier
66-64
Cincinnati Gardens

</tbody>

Again the Bearcats were ranked #1 in the country. And again Xavier defeated Cincinnati 66-64 in the final moments of the game on two free throws and a breakaway dunk by Kevin Frey.

<tbody>
2003-04
Xavier
71-69
Cintas Center

</tbody>

The Crosstown at the Cintas Center, but Xavier's first victory. No profane taunts, no technical fouls, no on-court tussles. The city's basketball rivalry was more civil this time around. Chalmers scored 20 points and hit a fadeaway jumper with 27 seconds left Tuesday night, leading Xavier to a 71-69.

<tbody>
2009-10
Xavier
83-79 (2OT)
Cintas Center

</tbody>

Two technicals. Two overtimes. Sharp elbows and even sharper tongues. A senior making the winning play at the end. Jason Love had a game clinching FT and Rebound to propel X to victory.

Xavier didn't make the NCAA Tournament in '00.

I'd go with '96-'97. It was so special coming on the heels of the losing season in '95-'96 and showed the world that we were back. And doing it on their floor in such unexpected fashion made it all the better.

I'm old enough to go with '68 game that broke the longest streak UC had of winning 12 in a row. That was a magic night in the Gardens.

Plus it came a year after the famous "crutch" play by Joe Pangrazio.

This article I guess was published 2 years ago, a couple of days before the game that has spawned all this lunacy. Nice trip down memory lane.

The Crosstown classic website is apparently wrong then.

Notre Dame kicked us squarely in the nuts in the NIT that year. Then did the same in Skip's last game as Xavier coach in the NCAA Tournament the following year.

As much as I loved beating them twice when they were ranked #1, the 03-04 Shootout jump started The Run. And for our program, that season was the best ever!

Gotta go 1996-97.

Not just Xavier taking off from a competitive standpoint, but it took away what had been UC's dominance of the Shootout during the Huggins years. During that timeframe, both Xavier wins had Huggins either complaining about Xavier's radio crew's behavior (1989-90) or the coaches' behavior (1993-94). I don't remember Xavier losing disgracefully or without incident back then.

I agree, but the one that was my real favorite was the Yates-coached game in the Gardens in Byron's final season, when Yates called a time out he did not have and Ed Badger, former UC coach whom Yates succeeded, cracked "Does Prop 48 also apply to coaches?" That was the year all five of UC's stellar class of recruits were on standby for another year because they were ineligible thanks to Prop 48. Badger was sitting in a row right behind me in the press area with about 20 scouts from other NBA teams. Forget who Badger scouted for. Think it might have been Indy. Anyway, the UC beat writer at the Post tried to have the quote taken out of the nottes and our editor refused.
