May as well start a whole thread devoted to J. I'm sure there will be plenty to talk about for the next 3 months.
I've been as concerned about his play as maybe any Xavier guy for a long, long time, but I gotta give the kid props for maybe the best 6 minute defensive effort that I have seen from anybody for a long long time last night. Blocks, steals and pressure on the press that changed the game. He's long enough to have an effect in the press game and I think the chaotic type of game suits him better.
If we are going to use more press, I want him in there. I also liked that he recognized the double on Stain and made a quality cut to the basket. Good job last night, J.

He's a starter and has been with the program for 3.5 years now. His play can/ will have a huge impact on the outcome of this season. I didn't watch the game, but will assume his play in OT help us win the game. Congrats Justin. Now, I wish I could say that I felt like he gives 110% all the time...........just don't see it and it looks like mentally he's not there all he time.

I don't think effort is an issue with him at all. I just don't think he likes to wear his emotions on his sleeve. And I'm fine with that.

I just want him to play with more of a sense of urgency and confidence. At times he looks timid. At times he doesnt shoot when he's open. At times he doesnt take charge. Where he is at this point in his career, he should feel comfortable with his role....he should be confident that Mack thinks enough of him to start. Just dont' see that in him enough and thats where I come back to playing with some fire and emotion......whether or not he shows it externally, I dont care. I think what I'm trying to say is that I view him as having an indiffernt type of attitude, b/c thats what I see from him most if the time.

I'll agree with you on the confidence factor. A moment last night was a perfect example of it: He was wide open on the wing for a three-point shot but he paused and thought about it before actually taking it. The ball was well short. Honestly, his three-point percentage would probably be much better if he just took all his shots in rhythm and didn't pull over whether it was a good idea.

Who knows what to think anymore.

Agreed. The first half I was complaining about why he was even out there. Missing shots, turnovers, and bad decisions. The last six minutes, as MOR stated, was huge for us and we wouldn't have won without him on the court. That block down low on their foreign big guy was HUGE. He fouled out a minute or so later and he was a very good foul shooter. The guy that replaced him looked like Charles Barkley trying to swing a golf club. It was comical and big for us to have that dude in there instead.
JMart isn't pretty when he plays, but he came through for us big time.

Tangent: I hated that Euro douche. He'd push someone in the back every rebound, then whine about fouls. He tried to act tough with Martin after JMart tied him up. For every push he got called for, 2 more went uncalled.

Yup. There was one where he literally shoved a Xavier player to the ground on a rebound and somehow acted incredulous for the foul call. I'm sorry, what?

The guy was playing the role of Big Deli in the first half then he returned to Moskevicious in the second half.

What you saw from that BigDeli Would Be was the product of a coaching line that follow, Knight, Krzyzewski, Wright, Crews, Dakich and now Simmons--wicked, mostly illegal picks, shoves and cry baby cry every time you punch or shove somebody and get caught. JMartin just gave what he had been getting all night. He could be one of the leaders Xavier so desperately needs. And look who's making free throws, none other than Semaj(13 of 17 and he was foulkd at least four more times and it was not called.

No kidding. That guy should have fouled out in the first 10 minutes. Shame on those refs for letting him get away with the amount of holding and pushing that he did. Every single play he was holding his man in the post. Lousy commie.

Not really fair to Lithuania to call them "commies", given their long history of resistance against the Soviets.

That's how I've always thought about JMart. He doesn't really show much emotion on the court, that combined with him being a mediocre player a lot of the time leads people to think he doesn't care or has poor effort. I agree with what Bleed is saying about him being timid though. So confidence seems to be a bigger issue with him than effort.

Can we say he hails from Uzbekhistan instead? Assholes!

What's he going to do, fall out of his wheelchair on you? Surely that guy can't walk anymore. He could barely move his last couple of years in the NBA.

Hence the name Arthritis Sabonis. Probably one of the best nicknames I've ever heard for an NBA player.

I am not shocked at all by the play of Martin. This is exactly how he played last year after he hurt his head. Everyone gave him a pass and said it can take months to recover from a concussion.
He's just not good.
Classic case last night where he comes down before the half court defense gets set-up. He hesitates, then goes to the rim and misses, then gets his own rebound, goes up with it and gets swatted and falls to the court. Evansville turns the defensivbe rebound into a break and scores.
I expect upperclassman starters on the XU basketball team to take that ball right to the rim and finish, especially against Evansville. If Martin isn't good enough to do that then at least have the sense to pull it out and set up some offense.

I agree with Bleed and you. I just wanted to clarify that effort and confidence are two completely different things. He could play with more confidence. And I don't know if that's a product of him hearing the groans from fans when he does something poorly.

Thank you for that! I need a good laugh every day and just the THOUGHT of Charles swing a golf club gets me every time.

Time to bring this back to Page One. He provided offense in Semaj's absence and foul-induced reduced assertiveness. Two good (mostly) games in a row.

Catch and shoot. Works everytime. When he plays with no conscience, he is the best player on the court

JMart was the MAN tonight.
The 3 is your most important player on offense and when JMart plays well, this team looks great.
Here's hoping he's found the Holy Grail, finally!

He looked as confident as I could remember seeing him in a Xavier uniform; quite a turnaround from the first 30 minutes of the Evansville game.

CMack said on the radio interview that he personally told JMart that the game last night was a "players game" and that he wanted him to have an aggressive mindset. Maybe J has been over thinking it. We've all said that when X gets into a press and he is just acting rather than thinking he plays better. Maybe this is the key.

If you notice, when Jmart makes a shot it's IMMEDIATELY after he touches the ball. No dribbling, no thinking. Just get it and fire it up. That's the mentality the staff should keep giving him. If you're open and you get it in rhythm, fire away. This should go for every player on the team. The more we dribble, the more dumb turnovers we tend to have.

I didn't take any time to read this thread. Just saw the title.
With that said I an so happy for JMart and I hope he is turning the corner.
I hope the end of the Evansville game and last night gives him the confidence to finish his career on a great note.
Really proud if him last night.

JMart has played UC couple times before and maybe he got more pumped-up for this rivalry than the other games.

Hopefully he can use this game to get the confidence to just go out and play. Don't think too much, just play. What we saw last night was a Justin Martin that wanted the ball, wanted to take the shot, and didn't hesitate. He will be an absolute load for other teams to defend if he keeps playing with that same level of aggression. It truly was a thing of beauty.

Reminds me of 2 years ago after the brawl when he went into the student section and started celebrating... Or when he created zip em up for the team lol.
I think J-Mart just looked like he was having fun out there honestly, and that's a big deal. He was aggressive, hit free throws, played pretty good defense. He didn't look like he was overthinking anything, and as a result, he puts up a career type of night. I think if he has a good game at Alabama, we could see a huge improvement through out the season for Justin!
