As for the Aces, they do have some decent wins over Mercer and Valpo, but that's about it. 2 of their wins were against non-Division I competition.
Personally, I hope they are horrible and we dominate. I will be making a rare trip to Cintas for this game, and I'd like to leave with a good feeling. I don't mind kidding myself on occasion. (I would rather they be amazing and we win, but there's a difference between kidding yourself and being certifiably crazy.)

Well they are better or just as good as Bowling Green. If Xavier plays like they did Saturday they will not dominate anyone.

These guys lost to IU 77-46 and Ohio University 81-59.
I expect us to blow them out. Anything less will be a disappointment.
It looks like their leading scorer is a guard who averages just under 25 a game.

I can honestly say this may be the most undisciplined defensive team I've ever watched. They get away with some of it because certain guys are great athletes, but well coached teams are starting to make them pay.
I remember after the Abilene Christian game I complained about the D and got blown up by a bunch of people because apparently Mack didn't think it was a problem.

I'm not too concerned about the halfcourt defense when you consider their numbers are inflated by transition buckets via rebounds and turnovers. The transition defense, though has been bad, and the live ball turnovers have been rough on the other end. More than anything else, missing point-blank shots has hurt this team.

It was not a "T" Repeat NOT. It was "Flagrant 1" foul. If it had been a T, Reynolds would have been out of the game. Jalen inadvertantly elbowed the Ev player in the throat . If the officials thought it was deliberate after viewing the replay, Jalen would have been ejected. The referees and the announcers on this game were awful. Austin Croshire (a former Pete Gillen player at Providence by the way, kept calling X eggsavier and correcting himself immediately afterwards. The two of them were so pro Evansville it was pathetic. I don't get the criticism that this team is soft....
I have seen way too many turn overs, averaging 14 per game. Perhaps some are weak with the ball including Dee Davis....However I don't really understand what folks are looking for. Stainbrook and Philmore just aren't going to beat most people to the ball...it's just not physically possible. They have to establish position, and when that doesn't happen, it's likely they will lose it. So I can see where the bigs aren't strong enough with positioning...but soft? I guess I don't understand what the specific criticism is...

I remember marveling at it during the game, but seeing the 15-rebound stat just reinforces it: Stainbrook was grabbing just about everything off the glass. He was struggling at times defensively, and he had a couple bad trips on the offensive end, but the rebounding dominance was significant. He was a big reason why Evansville was held to a 20.7% offensive rebounding rate, though he could have used a little more teammate help to boost Xavier's offensive rebounding rate (27.3%, 8% below their average).
I'm using rates rather than raw numbers, because they tell a more accurate story. Raw numbers are too influenced by the percentage of misses a team has, as the defense is on average more than twice as likely to grab the rebound than the offense. If you hold an opponent to a much lower shooting percentage (increasing the total number of potential defensive rebounds), you're much more likely to "out-rebound" them in terms of total numbers while the reality of the rebound battle could be very different:
Xavier did an excellent job on the defensive glass, holding a poor offensive rebounding team to a much lower rate than their already crappy average. They did a pretty poor job on the offensive glass, though, as already mentioned, when they were up against an average defensive rebounding team.
EDIT: Of course, we're dealing with a small sample size: Only two more offensive rebounds would have brought them up to Evansville's average allowed, and only one more beyond that would have brought them up to their own average on offensive boards. On the other end, only two more offensive boards would have brought Evansville up to their average and one beyond that would have led them to surpass Xavier's average allowed. One thing is pretty conclusive statistically: The original point that Stainbrook did a really good job on the glass.

It's interetsing with turnovers the past couple games. In the first halves of both games, they turned the ball over too many times (11 and 8, respectively). Then in the second halves of both games, they turned it over only three times. Whatever second-half adjustments are occurring, can we please see that for the whole game down the road? One thing is for sure, this shouldn't be a turnover-prone team against the usual halfcourt defense.
Overall, I'm happy they got the wins the past two games (obviously), but the process has been disappointing. It's good to see the team grit out some close wins (and make a comeback in this one), as that should be good experience and speaks to some qualities of this team. But, the team should not have been in that position in the first place against the low competition they have faced. They should not have let BG back in multiple times and they should not have been down for so much of the game against Evansville.

This isn't a bad team if they can develop an outside game. All teams have to do is lock down our inside game and we are screwed. Mack needs to start setting screens for M Davis and let him go to town. It's hard to believe but I think we really miss Stegner. Is it possible that maybe our last 5 games have been against the best 5 teams in basketball and we are just that good? :whack:

What is really interesting to me is that we had 11 turnovers in the first half when we tried to play a half court, grind it out game, then only 3 in the second half when we tried to speed up with the press.
Sometimes, I think that CMack gets way too enthraled with the fixation to always pound the ball into the post and there isn't enough fluid movement. Guys stand around and pass up shots, the.n bad passes ensue. I really hope that when both Amos and Stinger get back, the depth will allow us to press more and speed things up.

Evansville did so much off-ball movement compared to us. It was interesting watching the two different styles. X seems very still throughout their half-court offense, with hoping that guard play dominates and we can jsut break them down off the dribble. Where as Evansville was so unselfish off-ball, moving constantly, setting screens, and never standing still. It was wearing us down quite a bit.

I thought the same thing. Philmore still looks lost out there, and he has cinder blocks for hands. He can convert a dump off, but that's about not. I'm really hoping Reynolds and Farr can improve fast. I would love to see them take some of Philmore's minutes. I think both players have a much higher ceiling.
I just don't think Philmore has a ton of talent. He looks like he should be strong but often plays week and gets pushed around. He isn't particularly strong with the ball in his hands. He isn't particularly athletic. I was hoping for a Travis Taylor-esque turnaround from him, but I don't think that's going to happen.

Where as Evansville was so unselfish off-ball, moving constantly, setting screens, and never standing still. It was wearing us down quite a bit.
Agree. I'm not really sure exactly what Mack's offensive 'philosophy' is, but it seems to involve a lot of standing around and then relying on someone to beat his man one-on-one, either a guard driving on the perimeter or a center posting up with his back to the basket. I'm not great at identifying and understanding different types of offense in basketball though, so I could be wrong here.

Our FT defense saved us in the second half.
Yeah, an 89% FT shooter misses two in the last minute.

The halfcourt offense last night was completely stagnant. The only dynamism they show is when Semaj attacks, and for whatever reason they seem to want to put Semaj off the ball and let Davis/Randolph run the offense. It's a problem.

Yep, yet some are calling for Semaj to stay off the ball.

I mean, if it's me I probably rotate Myles and Dee at the 2 and have them spend most of their time spotting up. I still have confidence in Dee's perimeter shot. You can play with having a big lineup with Martin at the 3 or a small lineup with Randolph in the game (and Semaj guarding the 3 on defense), but to me Semaj needs the ball in his hands. When we were honking the lead against BG it seemed like X went 4-5 possessions without Semaj attacking. That makes zero sense to me.

The problem last night was Evansville packed it in when Christon had the ball. Every time he tried to drive there were 3 guys in his way. Now he's good, but not so good that he can get through 3 big bodies waiting for him in the lane. Our bigs need to be more of a threat to score, because they weren't getting much respect last night.

I don't know if it's been said on here but thank you to whoever on this board personally told Semaj to bend his knees when he shoots free throws. I have full confidence he will now shoot at least 75% of the year and we need if when he will go to the line 10 times a game. Glad one free throw problem has been taken care of.

In the last 10 minutes, though, he was getting the ball higher above the 3 line and drew foul after foul after foul. In the first half, he was catching the ball as part of the offense and had no room to operate. If he gets the ball high - whether they are packed in or not - he's going to score with the way fouls are being called (assuming he continues shooting 70-75%).

I like him getting the ball higher but I think a big part of the improved play in the second half was the increase in intensity and aggressiveness. The team was sleepwalking in the first half.
I still think we need our bigs to be more of a threat offensively. Stainbrook, along with having some moves around the basket, is an especially good passer out of the post and getting him the ball down low helps a great deal.

And Semaj was more clutch from the free throw line last night and during the closing seconds of the Bowling Green game. Sometimes I'm not sure what to expect from the team.
Last year, Xavier probably loses one of those two games, if not both (see Vanderbilt and Wofford home losses).

Had a few thoughts about the game, ended up turning into a full blog post (http://fromstaaktomack.wordpress.com/2013/12/11/post-evansville-a-few-thoughts/). Hopefully I can consistently get posts out there again.

Have it on DVR but it sounds like a prime candidate for "delete without viewing". Especially since I turned right to fox sports 1 upon getting home. and almost lost the dinner I had at the party.
Uh, were the students required to attend the Christmas party with you? Were they diligently getting ready for Finals? I am usually watching on TV and haven't been to a game in 2-3 years and I was surprised by the lack of students. Was this typical or is there some explanation. Sadly, I never let finals (or anything else) get in the way when there was something fun to do......
Delirious after a long ride home.... didn't see a thread about this very topic. I guess I'm not the only one who thinks it's an issue.

Not for nothing but how about the Balentine kid? He could play for a lot of top tier schools in the country.

Remember their duo of Balentine and Mockevicius? They're about 6 minutes away from a miracle comeback and an NCAA bid 2 years later.

Mockevicius has been the national leader in total rebounding rate for the last two years, both times by a good margin.

I think Evansville's coach has been the national leader in BMI since Majerus died.

There should be a delay function to make sure people actually want to post something like this.

I need to go back and pull a tape of an XU - Evansville game when Simmons was playing. I doubt he was as "thick" then.
