If the Iowa game bothered us that much mentally, then we are softer than melted butter. Worst X effort I've seen in a long time. The other day I brought up what I thought was a poor defensive effort against Abilene Christian and was met with a lot of "what game were you watching?" and "Mack was pleased so why shouldn't we be?"

Two and a half games later and the defensive issues continue in a major way.

This team has a lot of talent. At times it seems like they have no idea how to use it.

It seems like the last couple of years when we play teams that are well coached we often get outplayed despite probably having more talent.

I think the turnovers are the biggest problem. They are killing us in transition and a lot of their open looks are coming from the fast pace of the game. Defense sure isn't helping, but giving up 12 offensive possessions which lead to easy opportunities for the opponent is something that is tough to overcome no matter how good a team you are.

No offensive identity...turnovers...defense can't keep up. It's a mess right now.

I honestly do think we'll turn the corner at some point...I just hope it comes soon because this is miserable to watch right now

I blame Mack. These guys are in college right? When is the lat time a Xavier player has ever been in trouble other than the Dez BS. Chris mack may be too nice and he may have too many nice guys on his team. I have problems with some guys on his team but it isn't beacause they are trying to be college students and having fun. They are just too laid back in my opinion. They lack toughness.

Was at Mohegan Sun in CT for the tournament they held last weekend.

Saw a fair amount of notable and recognizable players out and about until the late hours of the morning. One of those players had a particularly great day the next afternoon in the championship. Time to get back to reality guys. They are kids in college. There are worse things in the world they can be doing.

As bad as that looks to us fans, better to do it now early in the season than down the road in March when your season really is on the line.

With the team laying an egg this weekend, they have much less margin for error going into Big East play a month from now. UC and Wake Forest are now must-win games and a game like Alabama now looks more daunting by comparison.

Last year we loss to Pacific and actually had a damn good year under the circumstances. year before that we lost to LBSU and Hawaii and went to the sweet 16. The year before that we lost to Old dominion and went to the dance. The year before that we lost to Marquette and Baylor and went to the sweet 16. We are 11-9 in Holiday tournaments since 07-08. The way I see it is since this is the first time we got swept in a Holiday Tournament then we should at least make the elite 8, whose with me:rtfm:

There isn't anything wrong with it legally but when you play basketbal on a D1 team that is tanking your early season tourney there is something massively wrong. You can pull that and win but if you do and lose its time for mack to lay down the law.

Heard one doctor cleared him and the other did not on Monday after some blood tests. It is a liability issue for X to have him leave the country and be sick in the slightest of ways.

Please - this loss has nothing to do with 3 kids hanging out until 2AM. They weren't doing anything illegal. If we have a Saturday home game at noon, these kids are most likely up 'til 2AM anyways. Just so happens they were out in public as opposed to being awake in their apartments playing video games.

Maybe we should focus on the glaring on-court problems this team has before worrying about crap like this. Our "depth" was supposed to be our strength this year. Unfortunately having a 10 man rotation which consists of 7 horribly inconsistent guys (everyone outside of Semaj + Myles + Stain) does us more harm than good.

While Mack is definitely right about some of his post game/ halftime comments (Dee needing to play better, Semaj needing to pick his spots) - I'd like to hear him sack up about him needing to improve as well. Made absolutely no changes to our press break vs Iowa, our zone offense consisted of passing it around the perimeter and praying Myles get open, and I am still flabbergasted about why he didn't start pressing until the 3 minute mark.

Pulled THEIR starts? Who's they? Dee Davis is the only one who started both of the prior games, and he's definitely a questionable starter. I expect Randolph to develop and take his spot. Philmore only started against Tennessee, so I'm not buying this. This sounds like a rumor started by someone in the stands.

Either way, in an NCAA where players are accused of legitimate crimes weekly, this is miniscule. It would be ideal if the team was watching film while listening to classic music all night, but I'm not buying that this hinders their performance, or that Mack was even punishing them.

I agree with most of the stuff you say, but not this. Christon has bad form and has his elbow out. If he gets his elbow in that would help him immensely including on FT's. I can't believe the staff has not corrected this flaw in his shooting motion.

I didn't get to watch the game, but typically you're never as good as you think you are when things are going well. Similarly,a team is never as bad as you think they are when things go poorly.

If a few breaks go a different way in the Iowa game and they ended up stringing together 3 close wins we'd probably be overrating and over hyping the team.

Realistically this team has one future NBA'er with a limited supporting cast. Mack will still find a way to improve this team and have them at worst on the bubble when March comes.


I think X will still be top 75 in Kenpom when the updated rankings are out Sunday. That's after 3 straight losses including to a bad USC team. Everyone should try relaxing.

We lost three games we should have won. We're not the most talented team out there, but we're not the least talented either. Neither USC nor Tennessee nor Iowa are stacked talent-wise. Playing hard, scrappy ball with some heart and intensity can make up for a lack of talent, and we're not even doing that for 95% of the game. UC, Wake and Bama have now become must wins heading into conference play, and I'm not overly hopeful. I think we're looking at another very long season.

I think this casino bullcrap has been blown out of proportion. Let's say they were out until 2-3 am, they still could have easily gotten 8 hours sleep. Also, the Atlantis casino might be the tamest casino I've ever been in. Families can be seen until 2 am in there.

You missed the point. Maintaining my commitment to the university means that I made sure I was ready to perform when it mattered. This tourny was a huge part of the season (which is why I used the metaphor of exams) and these three young men violated their end of the obligation. IT IS a big deal if true.

Sports scholarships and educational scholarships aren't so different from each other. For both, you get a free (or partial) ride in return for fulfilling certain requirements. Part of maintaining a sport scholarship is producing on the court and playing to the proper level required for that team, along with following team rules (which may include a curfew aka being in bed at a certain time). If the player is unable or unwilling to do that, the scholarship has to go to someone more worthy of it. Mediocre basketball talent isn't hard to locate. We'd have no trouble filling a scholly with an equally talented kid or one with less talent who is willing to play harder.

We're lacking pure talent this year. We need to make up for that with focus, effort and tough play. We didn't do that this weekend (regardless of who was where at what time), and we can't afford to keep playing this way if we want to still be playing in late March.

If that was the reason they did not start I'm pretty sure it would have been reported. Yet it has not been. Seems like a basketball decision to me. Hell, many on this board were calling for Dee and Isaiah to be benched beforehand.
