Here we go again. Cramps during key games. Please figure this out.
Reminds me of Chad Johnson.
I thought this was no longer an issue.
Anyone have insight?

Drink pickle juice. It sounds crazy, but it works.

When you donate to Xavier, you can say where you want your donation to spent but maybe we can get more specific...."Please spend all of this money on pickle juice for the hoops team!"

The solution isn't as simple as "drink water". Could be his pregame routine, maybe his diet...etc. What's ridiculous is that it hasn't been fixed yet.

I have never seen a college or professional player struggle with cramps for such an extended period of time. That leads me wanting to blame someone. Are the doctors doing enough? Are the trainers putting together a respectable workout plan and pre game routine? Is Semaj not following thorough with instruction? Ugh.

I could be wrong, but I don't think NBA scouts worry about cramps because they figure that they have the staffs to address the issue. It's frustrating that we don't.

I wonder if anyone has charted the cramping problems? If so, I wonder if it happens more often on the road... It's a lot harder to keep kids on a healthy diet on the road, and travel in general can mess with the body.

Maybe he spent too much time in the sun and got dehydrated. That can lead to cramps.

This is the first time this problem has shown up since I think UC last year. He'll be fine by conference play just hope X hasn't had any terrible losses by then.

See my post in the game thread. I get them a lot after (and sometimes during) running half marathons. They suck and could be something that Semaj will get no matter how much he takes precautions for them not to happen. Bottom line: Xavier has to be ready to play when this happens because it may happen a lot while Semaj is here. Tonight, they were not ready. Next time, maybe they will be.

Other way around. On the road they always eat as a team so the diet is easier to monitor. I believe cramps occur more often in practice and at home games than in road games.

Interesting. My experience was the opposite. At home you had team meals and a cafeteria with plenty of options. On the road it was restaurants -- and typically fast food. Then again my experience wasn't as a basketball player.

Maybe he couldn't find any hot dogs at the Resort.

This is actually the opposite of what I was told - on the road they have a bit more structure from a scheduling perspective and can monitor diet closely - at home it's kind of a crapshoot.

Has anyone heard if he's playing today?

Last year Semaj ate hot dogs at halftime to prevent from cramping up in the 2nd half. I'm hoping last night was just a fluke re occurrence due to not adjusting well to the humidity there and not another cramping trend for Semaj.

Does he have a history of having cramps?

We went through this a few years ago with Shelvin Mack... he made dietary changes with a dietitian and the problem went away.

Obviously the Iowa guy went down with cramps as well; hopefully (for you) its just tied to the location...

This is accurate. During a tournament environment the team arranges all the meals, typically catered by the hotel. They may get meal money for a meal or two but it would be for the meals they don't have time for a sit down meal.

Someone smarter than me will have to explain how eating hot dogs would prevent cramps. I tried google and turned up nothing on the subject. Maybe Xavier knows something no one else does.

I've heard pickle juice a ton, but hot dogs are a first.

Lots of sodium, which helps you retain water.

Cramps are often very difficult, if not impossible, for some people to avoid. High temperatures and high humidity certainly lead to dehydration and loss of electrolytes which then leads to cramping, and their may be other factors as well. Some people sweat more than others, and they are especially prone to cramps. I ran a lot of distance races and almost always had cramps when I went hard in hot weather either during or after the race. I researched the problem intensely, reading articles and talking to experts but never came up with a solution. My experience was that it took several days to overcome a bad case of dehydration, so I'm pessimistic about Semaj being able to do well today or tomorrow. Then again I never had had access to IV treatment. Hopefully that will help him. I'm glad to see that Mack is no longer blaming Semaj for the cramps as he did when they first happened last year.

Good news is we won't have to worry about Semaj and his selfish cramps next year :jawdrop2:

Not so fast if you listen to Seth Davis.

I would advise not doing that.
