View Full Version : How can X ensure a strong student section during break?

Coach Mack recently tweeted about the importance of XU's student section to the team:

"Want to once again thank the best student section in America. You guys/gals have no idea the impact you have. See you Wed!"

I completely agree. But as BmoreX pointed out, students are on break for most of Xavier's Big East home games:

12/31 vs. St John's (Christmas break)
1/4 vs. Butler (Christmas break)
1/9 vs. Marquette (Christmas break)
3/1 vs. Creighton (spring break)
3/6 vs. Villanova (spring break)

What can X do to ensure a strong student section while its students are on break? Invite feeder high schools to substitute? Get local Xavier students organized and committed in advance?

Maybe the university already has something planned, but if not I hope they take steps while there is still time. It might make the difference in a couple of these games.

Cancel Christmas and spring breaks. These kids should be able to finish in 3 years if properly focused on the important things.

My one and only game at Cintas was with my college age son. He loved it and we did beat St Louis, but it did seem to be missing something because it was during break and the students were missing. The campus was empty an it was hard to give him a feel for the place. We both loved it, but I'm looking forward to attending the Evansville game in December when I expect a nice win and a more normal/full experience. The students are what makes the whole thing really rock.

They should have an e-mail list of recent alums somewhere. Offer anyone who graduated within the last 4 years "emeritus" tickets into the student section on a first come-first served basis.

Photocopy of your X diploma is your ticket.

Aren't the enough local students (we used to call them "day hops" to get 750 of them to the games?

They need to suck it up and go to the games! Not gonna brag..ok maybe a little, but I used to come down from Akron for break games. And that was early a10 years...find a way to get to big east games!

The Student Section is the best thing going in the Tas. They get better every year and I am impressed. I think that kids are coming to Xavier these days just to be a part of it.

Seriously...if you want a good student section during the breaks, offer those unclaimed tickets to young alumni at a discounted price. You'll get a nice rowdy student section who is very excited to be there.

Xavier already offers a great discount on season tickets for recent grads. There are probably about 100-200 of us all up in section 216 in the corner. Now we have all graduated and have a little bit of money so the beer is flowing pretty steady up there. It's a lot of fun, although I do feel bad for people who are not recent grads who have to sit in that section.

The key is should. Unless things have changed in the last two years I fear this is still not the case. Despite being a season ticket holder since Cintas opened. My name still sometimes appears on the "lost" alum list that get's filtered around people by class. Admittedly, I haven't had issues in the past couple of years, so hopefully that's changed. But what I am saying is there was once a disconnect between the basketball season ticket holder list and the general alumni list.

I agree. I have students in my freshman classes that are already part of the Xtreme fans group, and are excited to be part of Xavier basketball out of the gate.

Clearly you haven't been in your seat at the final buzzer when they take a head count.

Why don't they offer free tickets to local area high school basketball teams both girls and boys. A lot of high school kids can drive and I know I liked to go to college games while in high school. Easy way to pack the student section with kids who know the game.

Easier said then done. Any kid 7th grade or higher is looked at as an NCAA recruit and it makes it difficult to just give them free tix.

It can be done, but it's a lot tougher than just mailing out tix to all the area schools.

Since they're all conference games, I would say it was it was the league office.

What a lot of places do for big games over the break is that they'll open up the residence halls. It's actually quite nuts because the students come back for two days and don't have any classes. Xavier never did this when I was there. I take it that they still don't. But, that's what a lot of schools will do.

Well you could build a beeramid and have your so called "friend" point you out to a former student on beer #9. But that's just my experience. :stickmove:

Being a student this really sucks for all of us, and trust me, the students at X are even more mad than all of you. Just horrendous scheduling and I do not know how this happens. I will be there, as I live close, but we will be lucky to have half of the student sections full for some of the most exciting games of the year and that is disappointing. With that being said, the Georgetown game should have a pretty rowdy student section.

When I was there, Xavier left the residence halls open for one extra day before Xmas break for a UC game.

Do any of those games land near either end of those breaks? Maybe they can leave the residence halls open a day late or open a day early, if the games land then.
