Can one of the bloggers please do a story and interview on our PA guy. I feel like he has been there for 30 years. I want to know the story behind his Three Point Field Goal! call, why he decided to start adding who got the assist, how he got the job, what is his day job, did he go to X...and so much more.

Personally I can't stand the way he calls it when Xavier scores. Keep hoping someone will tell him to change it up.

It's been like that since I had consciousness. It's all I know and I love it. Even my UC loving cousin references his style (with respect).

His name is Herb Bauer and he is a great guy. Son played baseball at Xavier and graduated a few years ago.

He's the only PA guy I can remember and I've been going to games for 20+ years. His calls are a little long-winded but I love them. He gets excited but never over the top.

Herb Bauer is as much a fixture as Joe and Byron.

I do like herb Bauer's calls at the game. My signature line below however references the previous (?) PA announcer introducing an X player at Schmidt:
One of my earliest memories of x hoops.
Six foot four and a sophomore, out of Cincinnati, Ohio..he's your friend and he's mine....Dexter "sky walker" Bailey...with a crescendo towards Bailey.

Always loved the PA guy. His calls are big time basketball. Thumbs up.

Last night when the refs went mental and called 800 fouls in the second half you could tell he was struggling to keep it together.

Guy is the best. Love his calls and like some others, he's the only PA guy I can remember and I've been going to games for over 15 years.

Musketeer Madness had a nice article a couple years back that discusses the 3 point field goal call: http://musketeermadness.com/article.asp?ID=1565
I hope he stays another 20 years. Coaches and players come and go, but his calls tie a lot of different eras of Xavier basketball together.

This thread is making me think of some of my favorite PA lines and how he says some of the players' names. The # 1 for me will always be, "Daaaarrneellllllll Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiilllllllllllllllllllllllliams," when the starting lineup was announced.

I can't remember what bar I was at, but I ended up seated next to him not knowing who he was. For some reason the conversation shifted to Xavier hoops and he told me he was the announcer...and I didn't believe him. Then he went through all his "calls"..."three point field goal, three point field goal"...."we have a timeout on the floor"..."Justin DOELLLLLLLLLLLLLMAN"..."last touched by xxxx, Xavier to inbound"....and then we talked Xavier hoops and past games for 2 hours.
After this may years of hearing him, I find myself actually saying the exact same things when I announce my kids tournament games at their school....and I don't try to...it's just ingrained in my brain from going to so many games.

The man is a Xavier legend. I love the calls. It wouldn't be the Muskies without him. A Xavier Institution.

Snipe hit it on the head...I can't imagine going to a game and not hearing that voice. Sato, Sato for 3.

Chalmers. Charmers for Xavier.

Herb is great.
When you put together his years on the mic, and that entire game crew --- Jerry Gels on the clock, Tom (51 seasons and counting as the official scorer) Grogan, and my classmate Dan Hogan on the scoreboard --- and throw in SID Tom Eiser, we have a great team with easily 200 years of experience.
No Butler Buffoonery in the Tas or the Gardens.

Agreed. Been going to XU games for 25 years (since I was 12) and he's the only PA voice I've ever heard, and want to hear, at home games.

Correct, Emp, in all respects. No Tomfoolery or Hijinks either.

This exactly! I have been hoping for another Williams on the roster for a long time for this reason

I'll keep the knob-slobbing going by saying that I know Herb, he's a great guy, he does an excellent job, and it wouldn't be the same without him. Having said that, I'd trade him in a cocaine heartbeat for this guy...

Mods please feel free to change this thread title to include Herb's name, if only as a sign of respect.

Herb Bauer is a great American and as much a part of the soundtrack of my life as anyone.
I have been attending Xavier games with my father for the past 28 years and I think Herb has been there ever since.

For those who attended the Butler game last Wed do any of you recall Herb announcing and alluding to Thad Matta's children attending Xavier University?
I heard it on the Tv broadcast. Just WOW. His kids could have gone for free to OSU, I'm thinking.
MOR obviously missed the Admissions Committee meeting where that slipped through.
