Appalachian State is one of the teams expected to contend in a wide-open Southern Conference this season, and junior forward Jay Canty is one of the reasons why. Canty, a 6-foot-6 forward, is one of the SoCon’s best returnees after he posted averages of 14.3 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in 2012-13.
Unfortunately for Canty and the Mountaineers he won’t be available for the team’s first nine games, as he’s academically ineligible (http://www.journalnow.com/sports/asu/basketball/article_96110c68-473f-11e3-806b-001a4bcf6878.html). On Wednesday head coach Jason Capel announced the status of both Canty and freshman guard Aaron Scott, who’s been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules.

Don't worry the Coach goes on in the next paragraph to praise the athlete for taking responsibility... it's not like he had a choice.

Canty looks like he developed into a pretty nice player. Why exactly did he leave? Was it becasue of Wells having signed on? I seriously doubt he was too concerned about competing with Martin for playing time.

I think the official reason was "more playing time" but think it was more mutual than that. The early injury at X was tough for him to get back up to speed. I never heard anything bad about the kid. Seems he was a hard worker @ X, just didn't fit in the plans.

Seems kinda crazy that they would just now be finding that out.

Martin was very good in practice during his ineligible year and outperformed Canty on a regular basis. He was often described as the second-best player in practice (behind Tu, of course). This adds to the disappointment that his playing career has been.

Still, that alone probably wouldn't have been enough, but if you add the Dez Wells signing, the position starts to look rather cramped. I bet the decision was mutual.

This is Martin's third year playing. He started off great last year and was xaviers second best player through 10 games. The injury killed him. I expect big things from him this year. I think he will be a 12 and 6 guy.

Is that a joke? 12 & 6?

He was 12 & 5 through the first 8 games last year.

ok, didnt know that or take the time to look it up. He was solid first part of the season. Just from what I have seen this year he is up to his old tricks. So frustrating, he should never put the ball on the floor.

8 games out of a 32 game season is nothing to write home about. Most players develop during the season. Not digress.

Well, he did have the head injury (serious concussion) during game 8 or 9 and was never really the same afterwards. Hopefully he comes back from it this year.
