It looks like admission is free for today's exhibition game at 2 pm. It should be a good chance to see what all 8(!) newcomers can do.

Joined audio late (wish I could be there) but good to hear the ladies back on the court, and Mike Schmaltz at the microphone.

Xavier wins 70-65! I was at the game.. there was some good and some bad. Ashley Wanninger, Shatyra Hawkes, Briana Glover, and freshman Leah Schaefer stood out the most. When the team made good decisions with the ball, we looked pretty good. 14 turnovers isn't bad at all. We did have periods where we made a lot of bad decisions on offense. Defense was good at times and bad at times. The rebounding is worrisome... there's not a lot of height and it shows. I think we were outrebounded by about 6. I am really impressed with Schaefer. I think she's going to be the next Xavier great. Maddison Blackwell and Kayla Davis didn't show me much today... however they have plenty of time. For those who don't know already, Erica Dawson is out for the year with an ACL injury.

I guess the good news is they won, but they struggled to beat a DII team that was playing its third game in three cities in as three days (and lost the other two by 26 at Dayton and 25 at Indiana State).
Tied 29-29 at halftime and down by four in the second half. I guess the good part was they were able to close it out after being tied, 59-59, at the under-4 timeout.
The five returning players started. Schaefer, Davis, and Blackwell were the only ones I recall coming off the bench. Schaefer looked like she can contribute, and will need to on the boards. I think Davis may have been a little nervous (the first time she checked in they had to remind her to take off her warm up), and I don’t think Blackwell showed much.
Hawkes was the leading scorer (17, I think). For them to have some success, I think she’ll need to take over, but she’s still struggling when to do that while keeping others involved as well. I think Glover had 14, which surprised me when I saw that.
I wish I could be more optimistic on things, but it doesn’t look good to me at the moment. I hope I’m wrong, but there may not be more wins to speak of this season.

In all fairness, Dayton is a Top 15 team by most publications. But yeah, in general I'm expecting a pretty long season. I just hope the freshman and sophomores can develop.

I think that's part of where I was disappointed. I was hoping to see more of the freshmen, but only three of the eight got off the bench. I'm sure there are good reasons, but I was hoping in an exhibition game to get to see more.

The program still doesn't have what I would consider quality depth. I really only expect 4 freshman to contribute this year.
Let's look at the freshman:
Brianna Gladney -- Walk-on. Probably won't play much this year.
Christina Ohlinger -- Walk-on. Probably won't play much this year.
Sydney Neal -- Was a late signing.. originally signed with Cincinnati State. Don't know how much.. if any she will contribute. Kayla Styles was originally in this spot... but did not end up coming to X.
Erica Dawson -- Injured her ACL.. out for the year. Will redshirt. Disappointing as she was a big time scorer in high school at Marietta.
Martha Thompson -- Didn't see her at all in the exhibition... Is she hurt? Maybe someone can elaborate on this?
Maddison Blackwell -- Played in the exhibition.. talented, but like most freshman will need time
Kayla Davis -- Played in the exhibition.. like Blackwell, will need time
Leah Scheafer -- Played in the exhibition.. looked very good and will contribute this year

Maybe this exhibition game told us something.
I love Amy Waugh as a person and as a Xavier basketball player and XU grad. However, maybe Greg Christopher saw that she was not the one who could really lead this program into the Big East and he went ahead and made a change now rather than having another dismal season where he would have had to fire her unceremoniously. Brian Neal had been a Head Coach before and was brought in in the off season. Maybe Christopher wants to see if he is the answer this year- albeit with a youth challenged team.
If If Neal doesn't prove worthy, then a real search is conducted and a permanent person is brought in with another year not wasted.

I would be stunned if this team won 6 games all year.

Lamont, looks like you are die hard X fan... This team needs our support as any XU team deserves. They are young and hungry, so let's feed them with some positive fare so they can at least have the chance to thrive. Go X!

Brian Neal has been on the staff ever since Waugh has been the head coach. And today they made him the permanent head coach (http://www.goxavier.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/110713aab.html) (no longer interim). Doing that after one lackluster exhibition tells me Christopher thinks Waugh/Neal are/were the right people to turn things around as they are and doesn't want to blow it up and start over again next year.

Right, sorry. Neal is now in his third season there.
That being said, there was really no other option than to install him as HC with the departure timing.
Time will tell as to the length of his contract. Since he would have been originally hired by Mike Bobinski, that gives me a better comfort level.

Can't hurt anything to name him the head coach. It is impossible to recruit as an interim staff, and this is in all likelihood going to be a difficult year in terms of wins and losses, so watching him go through the season and then making him the permanent HC wouldn't make any sense.
Let's give him a couple years and see what he can do. This is still a great job and he has a really good track record at a D-II school, but he has quite a hole to dig out of.
