Vs, Xavier University (Cincinnati, OH) - BIG EAST

Arena: Cintas Center (Cincinnati, OH) - 10,250

Media: None (I also checked over at Quincy,
None there either. Better hope for Shannon's live tweets)

Pool on how many fans bolt after the basketball.

I don't think it impacted things a ton, at least on the X side of things. At least it didn't seem that way to me. Quincy had more fouls called on them. I thought the foul called on Coker for X near the end of the game was because of the new rules though. The rules will be a pain in the ass some games though for sure. Thought X handled things well today.

30 point wins are always nice, but...

We need to get rid of that stupid sword sound effect. WTF guys, this is the Big East! We didn't do it in the A10, why start now? Not only is it annoying as shit, but it's bush league and I will not stand for it.

Samej rarely asserted himself, but when he did.....WOW. I think Samej likes having M Davis out there.
Myles Davis is the guy that everyone wanted to feed. He is smart with the ball and didn't make freshman mistakes. Looked like a veteran.
Brandon Randolph played solid and also has a good looking shot. Plays pretty good D as well.
Stainbrook looked solid, ran the floor and has a nice soft touch on his shot. Also was giving direction to players.
Philmore looked solid as well.
Reynolds is very athletic but looked a little lost. A couple of highlight blocks. Looked like he was huffing a bit even though he played limited minutes.
Stenger looked like Stenger. It was interesting to see both he and Reynolds out there at the same time. Less ability but more energy. And more hand check fouls.
Farr looked better than I expected. Not starter material but still better than expected.
Martin will be a better 4 than a 3. He's a good rebounder, is active, can pull his guy out from the paint and is a threat from the outside.
Richards. I don't get all the negativity. Overall I thought he played well. Made freshman mistakes that typical freshman make.

Just got back from the UD/Findlay exhibition game. I taught a player who now plays at Findlay. We went to Findlay's win over Wright State last night, and it looked like they might pull off the win tonight over UD, but the back to back games and the FOULS got to them in the end. In the game tonight, 70 fouls were called (38 against Findlay and 32 against UD). The teams combined to shoot 96 free throws and the game took nearly 2 and a half hours. Either the players are going to learn to play with the new style or the refs will stop calling it this tight (my guess is the latter) by the 3rd week of the regular season. Game like this will destroy the fun of the game. Not sure which way it will go, but I bet the refs relent. There will be the occasional game during the season where it seems like there are 100 fouls called, but I think the refs will back off as the season gets going.

Wonder if the TV networks will be weighing in on this issue if the games are routinely lengthened to the point that program schedule gets more complicated.

No same scoreboards as last year. But they don't need to use the blue wall scoreboard for stats all the time as those got moved to the sides. They are trying out a new look and feel. Larger font, easier to read. What's not to like? The sword sound after every Muskie basket?

I came away impressed by how well Stainbrook moves for a big man. He was up and down the floor quickly and seemed to have a good feel/touch around the basket.

Also, Jalen Reynolds nearly palmed a block in mid-air above the rim.

I think that Myles Davis is my new favorite Musketeer:

Tweet from a fan...that Myles retweeted: "@flanneryr: @mdavis15 Great Job in your X debut! Thanks for giving me the "thumbs up" in the stands across from the X bench!"

And this tweet from Myles:"@mdavis15: Thank you to everybody for the bday wishes and coming to the game and supporting. Really do appreciate it!"

I think I love me some Myles Davis!!

Couple thoughts:

I agree the swords noise after a made free throw needs to go. Horribly annoying.

I was hoping to see more of Farr and Richards. With Farr, I think it's pretty indicative of his place on the team that Amos was in the game earlier and much longer. I put Farr add the number one candidate to transfer and make room for Blueitt next year, unfortunately.

Davis, Randolph, and Stainbrook logged really good. Those guys are going to be fun to watch this year.

I wanted to see more out of Reynolds, but hopefully that elbow doesn't keep him on the shelf for too long.

Just think how exciting and fulfilling it would be to "scratch off" the A10 logo and in its place paint the Big East logo and conversely how disappointing it would be to "scratch off" the Big East logo and in its place paint the AAC logo.

Few thoughts:

1) Sword = annoying
2) If the refs continue to blow the whistle with that much frequency, it will be the end of college basketball - BRUTAL!!!! What drives me crazy more than anything is ZER flow to a game, and watching free throws for 2.5 hours. I really hope they know what they're doing with this in the long run....don't know if it's smart to assume that because it worked for the NBA, it will work in college. The talent difference is HUGE!!!!!
3) I really hope Reynolds is the beast everyone says he is...dude is LOOOONG
4) I hope Stain can put up 12-15....15 is probably asking alot, but we need some consistency down low.
5) I like Myles - even when he's not hitting, looks to be able to contribute in other areas as well (not JUST a shooter)
6) JMart is the most frustrating Xavier player in the last 20 years.

I don't understand people complaining about the new handcheck rules and how it will make the game unwatchable. The goal is to make the game more watchable. The past few years college bball games have been terrible to watch because of the physical d that has been allowed.

I've watched numerous exhibitions this year where the new rules have had no effect. Instead of players and coaches whining about the new rules maybe they should concentrate on playing by them?

The problem will be selective enforcement in the first year and officials who are confused about when to call the violations.

Selective enforcement happens regardless of the rules.

IMHO the rules changing won't make refs any more or less consistent.

The benefit to the new emphasis is that teams will actually be able to run coherent offensive sets without having their guys mugged trying to cut through the lane.

Did the NCAA relax rules as far as having music or sound effects on the PA while games are in action? They shouldn't be playing these so-called "sword effects" while games are in action. There's a reason we don't have NBA-style sound effects during game action.

Great to see so many turn out for an exhibition game, even if actual attendance didn't match tix sold. The atmosphere was pretty good, too. Lots of students; lots of kids having a great time.

The team definitely came out cold but I'm not sure if it was first game issues or having Dee Davis out. It took them a while but once they hit their stride it was fun to watch.

Initially I didn't like the sword sound. Too flat and metallic and hurts my old ears. Two days later it's gotten worse. When the sound was mentioned in this thread I heard it echoing in my head as if a flashback from a violent encounter. Maybe need to mix in a couple more and rotate?

I think it's cruel that they don't give more training to the young women they choose to be the promo announcer. She's doing exactly what no woman holding a microphone should ever do: trying to be loud. This makes her voice higher pitched and flatter than it likely is naturally. She needs to aim for warm and soft and let the microphone do the work of making her voice loud. Between that and the sword I'm going to have to bring earplugs to stave off the sound-induced headaches I'm likely to suffer this season.

Cutest moment of the game: some kids (teens?) yelling at Matt Stainbrook as he was walking out. He turned around and they start shouting how much they like him and he's their favorite player. He got this big, slightly bashful grin on his face. Made me giggle.
