Ugh...what are the chances Justin Martin pulls a Jr year BJ Raymond?

Yeah, I didn't think so either.

Cincinnati.com has an article up that says Mack plans to use Martin as a face-up four man this year.

This brought about two thoughts:

1. James Farr must still be a year away from contributing. Stain and Reynolds would get the majority of the minutes at the 5 and Philmore will get a lot at the 4. I would've hoped Farr would be ready to fill in as a backup at the four, but this news makes me question that. It also makes me wonder why he wasn't redshirted last year. I realize we were short on players, but he still didn't play much (3.2 mpg). I have a fear we'll regret not redshirting him in a few years.

2. If Martin logs more than a few minutes per game there we could be in big trouble on the glass.

Mack also mentioned that Myles Davis is learning the 3 so maybe Mack is confident in an abundence of talent at PG and SG and is going to use Davis at the 3 or play with 3 guards on the floor at once (and no Martin at all).

Davis would/will get eaten alive by BEAST 3's. From what I have seen he is a very good shooter, but is a bit slow footed and he's very very small for a three in the new league.

Consider the guys other teams will be running out at the three:

Villanova: Darrun Hilliard 6 '6 215
St. John's: Jakarr Sampson 6 '8 204
Seton Hall: Fuquan Edwin 6 '6 215
Providence: Josh Fortune 6 '5 205
Marquette: Steve Taylor 6 '7 235
Georgetown: Jabril Trawick 6 '5 210
Depaul: Jamee Crockett 6 '4 207
Creighton: Grant Gibbs 6 '5 210

I would be very concerned if he sees more than a few spot minutes at the three.

Sampson and Taylor are both PF's

Sampson and Taylor are both PF's

They're both combo forwards.

St. John's will start a front line of Obekpa, Sampson, and Orlando Sanchez.

Either Sanchez or Sampson will play the three. Sanchez is even bigger than Sampson.

Marquette will play a front line of Gardner, Wilson, and Taylor.

Either Taylor or Wilson will play the three. Wilson is even bigger than Taylor.

Casual, while the fact that he'd have trouble guarding those SF's in the post, fact is that all of those guys are perimeter-based players. While he's not quick for a 6'3 guard, Myles is probably as quick as them. So unless each has developed a post up game (outside of maybe Taylor, who plays on the perimeter bc MU has some other beef down low), it wouldn't be the mismatch you apparently see.

The area I think would make that difficult is rebounding, unless Stain or Reynolds is Dwight Howard good at picking up loose balls.
