As odd as it sounds to say it, today kicks off the new PGA Tour season (formerly the Fall Schedule) at the Frys.com open.
Our old friend Jason is currently -1 through the first 4 holes today.

Just for clarity, BBC refers to Alabama/ Louisville St X player Justin Thomas. P.S: he did play 2 PGA events in 2012.
As opposed to Cincinnati St X/ UC Jim Herman who posted -4 in Round 1.

Thanks for clarifying joe, but everyone who is anyone knows that if you just say "St. X" you mean the real St. X. You really only have to clarify only if you mean Cincy St. X.

He had all kinds of mistakes yesterday and missed opportunities, but showed some grit at the end with back to back birdies on 17 and 18. That won him $101,000.
I'm sure he's disappointed, but a pretty good start to the year.

Two huge late birdies on Sunday to sneak back to even par for the day and -3 for the Tournament and a top 20 finish. Those two late birdies were worth a total of $30k (made $71k instead of around $40k) and about 10 FedEx Cup points.

However, it's a sign of how well he's been playing that this will be considered a bad week for him. Truly. Houston is his 4th consecutive week playing so obviously a fatigue (both mental & physical) factor takes hold. Shame b/c he played so well in Houston last year.
That 4 week stretch has been very productive with T14 @ Tampa, T4 @ Bay Hill and 3 solid rounds @ San Antonio so a MC in Gouston can be condoned.

Seemingly under the radar Jason posted 66 in RD 3 @ Harbor Town and stands T12 5 shots from the lead (-8).
The best news IMO is this course certainly does NOT fit this horse; Harbor Town is relatively short & extremely narrow and requires some of the most precise shots to stay in position. Very good work so far by Jason and could see another top tier finish with a sub-par RD 4.

Significantly better than I did this weekend, but of course, I was observing the Easter holiday. I'd be very interested to know more about when the serious endorsement money kicks in. The prize money to endorsement money ratio and curve I find interesting. Win enough on tour to tap the huge endorsement pool. I've heard if you win a major and the million plus that comes with it, endorsement value is several times that. When do the younger guys start getting rewarded for early success? How soon do companies try to latch on to an up and comer? How long do they commit and how are the incentives structured? Just curious how it all works.

Regarding Kokrak, In terms of making the Us Open Field...does anyone with a permanent tour card make the field? The name itself makes it seem like it does, but not sure if that is the case or not. If not, maybe he is gearing up for qualifying...I don't think thats the case but I don't know how all of that works.
The second reason for him not being in the tourney is probably a physical ailment. His last round he shot an 80 which leads me to believe that maybe something is wrong physically, or he just thought he needed a mental break. I don't think many people realize just how mentally exhausting golf can really be when you are competing. I'm mentally exhausted after a round or two of competition at my local club, and those tournaments mean squat...I can imagine at Kokrak's level it just has to wear you down at some points.

I'm mentally exhausted after a round or two of competition at my local club, and those tournaments mean squat...I can imagine at Kokrak's level it just has to wear you down at some points.
I don't know if he's hurting or not, but an 80 at Sawgrass isn't just about ailments; you hit the ball poorly there and disaster can come upon you very quickly. I know that was written in a manner that makes it sound like it applies everywhere, but you need to walk or play Sawgrass to see how much disaster actually lurks there.

Unless you had a high finish last year, or won the thing recently mostly everyone has to qualify. Toughest Tournament around to make.
There are several other qualifying exemptions other than where you finished in last year's Open......I'm guessing here but I think probably 1/3 to 1/2 of the field doesn't go through qualifiers.

Look out boys...
XU Grad Andy Pope is now tied for 2nd at 6 under par after 14 holes up here at the Cleveland Open in Westlake. I popped out there for part of the day yesterday and will be back out there this weekend. Lakewood Country Club is a traditional track that lends it self to Andy's game very well. This could be his breakthrough weekend.
Go Andy!!!!

How is Doug doing? Things generally okay?
I walked the back 9 with Andy and Doug today. Andy's flat stick was miserable today- he 4 putted from 4 feet for a bad triple bogey on the 12th and missed numerous birdie putts and shot a 75. After the round, Andy, Doug and I went back into the clubhouse, we had a beverage and I had a good talk with him. I guess you could say that things are "generally OK" I'll PM you with more info.

Andy Pope shot a solid -3 68 today to finish -5. Oh what could have been.
Andy threw away 3 shots from 4 feet yesterday on #12 -4 putting from there. If he doesn't do that, he finishes in a tie for 16 rather than a tie for 35. That was significant money.
He struck the ball great all week but the flat stick was balky. Hope this week gets him in a good mental place though.

I see Andy Pope is currently in a tie for 2nd in Wichita (very early on). I hope he can hang in there until my son and I walk over to Crestview Sunday for the final round.

Kokrak has had a decent round so far to open up the Deutsche Bank Championship - he's -2 through 16 holes (5 birdies mixed with a double bogey on #8 and another bogey).
Gotta think he's probably going to need a Top 10 finish or above to be able to advance to the next round.

Jason is +1 for the day (-2 overall) through 12 holes. That's well above the cut line, but he's got work to do since a tie for 24th place puts his projected FedEx Cup position at #80 (he needs to be Top 70 to play next week).

Spoke a little too soon. Birdies #4 to move back to -3 overall and tied for 18th place (this would put him about #73 in the projected standings).

Jason needs a big day today to make it to next week in the playoffs. So far so good. He's -2 through 4 holes, moving from 34th to 22nd place and moving his projected FedEx Cup standing from 89th to 77th.

Even if he doesn't make the top 70, I'd say it was a successful season for Jason. He was out with an injury from the Players to the PGA and still finished in the top 90.

Definitely a good year already, but I'm glad to see he's making a real run at extending it. 3rd birdie in 5 holes has him into 16th place this week and into 73rd in the projected FedEx standings.
-4 through 6 holes today now. Hell, he's in 11th place only 4 shots out of the lead at this point. Inside the bubble for now at 66th in projected FedEx Cup points.
Why NOT get four birdies in a row to be -5 through 7 holes? 7th place now.

There have been some very low scores today - what's encouraging is that Jason is already -5 through 8 holes.
I can only imagine what the leaders will do when they tee off in about an hour.

Still 5 under for the day after 13. Jason is going to need to get to at least -6 and maybe -7 even to stay alive in the Playoffs, because scores are low, and he's sliding down the leaderboard (to 13th now) with his pars. He's currently projected 69th.

And that's a wrap for Jason. He stays at -8 and is currently 70th overall in projected points. Probably not going to hold up given today's scoring.

And it didn't hold up. he's gonna finish 73rd. No worries though. A heck of a year that was rudely interrupted by the hernia. He is now a solid PGA Tour veteran now, though and I expect his first win very, very soon- maybe as soon as the first few events of the 2015 Tour Schedule- which begins in October.

Jason is 89th overall in ranking and only two guys lower than him are still playing. So he is solidly in for next season even after sacrificing a lot of money with his missed tournaments because of the injury. I agree; it's only a matter of time until his first Tour victory.

It's great that when he came back it didn't seem to take him long to get back to playing pretty much like he was before the injury. Nice round today.
That was a hell of a season-extending effort he put up today. Sucks that he fell just a bit short, but it's very impressive that he almost made it through despite being injured during a vital stretch of the season. I agree that the best is yet to come for Jason.
