Just wanted to share this. My dad spent some time in the hospital last week due to complications caused by his battle with cancer. A friend of his serves as a business mentor to one of the student managers for the men's team and Erik Stenger, among others. Last Thursday night, the student manager (Joe Sullivan), Erik, Matt Stainbrook, and Remy Abell all paid a visit to my dad in the hospital. My dad's friend set it up. It made his week. I'm very appreciative of how they took the time out of their evening to come visit. I passed along my thanks to them while they were there and also on Twitter. It's a simple reminder of the kind of character Xavier students have.

By the way, my brother-in-law, who was also there that night and is an Indiana grad, mentioned that we should all be pretty excited about Remy playing next season. He's really good and was a big loss for the Hoosiers. Also, I asked Matt if Remy would be dressing up in snazzy suits while sitting on the bench this season like he did last year. Matt didn't think Remy could pull off his style though.

Best of luck to your Dad.

And that's truly a great story about the Xavier gang making that visit happen.

Is there a backstory on why Abell left IU? They lost 4 starters from last year, and he was 1st or 2nd off the bench, so it would figure he would've gotten a lot of time if not start.

Hope your dad is okay.

Awesome story and the reason why Xavier is so special. Kids going out of their way to do something above and beyond what their duties as humans were. Thanks for sharing, and I'll make sure we'll include your dad and family in our prayers. Cheers.

Saw this retweeted by one of the players. Great story.

My buddy is a huge IU fan and said Abel was a very unfortunate loss for them. He said that his work ethic is 2nd to none and a year off to develop even more will make him quite the player. Apparently he's the kind of kid that elevates everyone around him.

Kibs,

Sucks to hear that your dad is back in the hospital, but what a cool thing done by those guys. Once again, this is the type of thing that makes me proud to be a Musketeer.

Prayers to both you, your dad, and the rest of your family. I can't imagine how hard this is on all of you.

Appreciate the good thoughts and prayers, everybody. Prognosis isn't all that good. We're hoping he's around long enough to see a game this season. That might be a bit of a long-shot though. He's made it a lot longer than expected so you can't rule anything out. He was the one who started dragging me to X's games when Byron was still playing. Has had season tickets since 88-89. I can't imagine not going to games with him but been forced to think about it.

Waggy, I don't know the back story on why Abell left IU. I meant to ask about it over the weekend but kept forgetting. I'll see what I can dig up. He seems like a really good kid.

First of all, best wishes to your dad.

My kid is currently at IU and I think that Abell will be an absolute stud for us. Don't really know why he left IU, even my son was a little surprised but Crean is constantly overrecruiting. Don't particularly like Crean's style as he seems to be putting more emphasis on the winning over what's good for kids. It's kind of quizzical as Abell should have got a lot more playing time next year after losing 4 starters.

Xavier Nation lost a big fan today. My dad passed away this afternoon. I hope his spirit will be with X tomorrow night and help them beat sUCks. Section 102 at Cintas won't be the same without him yelling, "Box out!" at the top of his lungs.
