So, as I'm sure everyone is aware, the new rules are that teams can begin practice 42 days before their first non-exempt game. The first day you're allowed to play a non-exempt game is the second Friday of November. That is Nov 8th this year, which is the earliest possible date that the season can begin.
Tomorrow is 42 days before November 8th, so anyone who has a game that day can begin practicing. College basketball in September.
The catch is that you're still only allowed 30 days of practice just like before, but you're allowed to start those 30 days as soon as tomorrow. You just need to schedule 12 off days.
I say that only to share what I think was a funny anecdote. In general, college basketball coaches live in their own world. Their own self-centered narcissistic world. CBS recently ran an article where several different coaches shared their thoughts on the new practice schedule. Most are in favor. Rick Ray from Mississippi State is not. Here is his reason....
The biggest reason being, our season is long enough as it is. It's the only sport that covers two semesters. I think we get so far behind, as far as our skill development, that we need more time dedicated to that rather than running this set play or getting our team defense
Well, I guess aside from women's basketball, men's swimming, women's swimming, men's indoor track, women's indoor track, women's bowling, men's hockey, women's hockey, wrestling and rifle, men's basketball is the ONLY sport that spans two semesters. I get that it is the only revenue sport, but every single winter sport spans two semesters.
I just found that funny.
Happy Hoops Season Eve!! (sort of)
