Apparently I'm the barer of death today. I don't care for Btler as a program, but a dog is a dog, and that's tough to lose one.

One more piece of evidence that the Pact with Satan has now been moved to Boston....and Indianapolis will now have to deal with the payback.

The Devil will collect his due.

Like Moses leading the children of Israel, Blue II tragically finds his life has ended just prior to getting to the promised land.

Poor little guy spent his whole life confined to the prison that is Stinkel Field House. So now, by my count, Butler is down its coach, best player, only capable ball handler, and now mascot. My guess is we'll be hearing a bit less from our inbred trolls to the west around here for awhile.

Such sad news, since Butler was the first school to use the bulldog as a mascot.

It's just a dog. I don't get why everyone is getting so worked up over it. Am I missing something?

Nice knowing you. You will likely be hunted down and murdered by overzealous dog lovers for uttering such blasphemy.

That line didn't work particularly well for Mike Vick's defense team.

Damn! And to think I was just getting settled in Louisville. Time to live life on the run.

Try to catch me now!

Guessing you never had a dog/got attached to one. That said can't see myself getting too attached to a mascot. It'd be a bummer yes, but nothing like losing your own dog....

It was probably someone's dog. I doubt it just slept in a cage at the fieldhouse.

Of course, this thread was over after DC's post, so I don't know why I'm bothering.

That is hilarious!

Well done.

I don't know. If something ever happened to the Blue Blob I'm not sure I could go on....

The Blue Blob will never die!

After the high of getting invited to the Big East, it's been one hell of a bad summer to be a Butler fan.

I fully expect that to extend well beyond this summer. Well beyond it.

The dog was owned by the school's director of web marketing, 2002 Butler grad Michael Kaltenmark and his wife Tiffany.

I like the fact Butler President Jim Danko stated the dog "epitomized the Butler Way". How in the hell does a dog epitomize anyone's "Way"? That is ludicrous! Hope that was said tongue in cheek, what a bunch of BS.

Did they copyright that dog like all their other stuff?

Well sure he epitomized the Butler Way. The dog slept in a little dirty dog cage, not unlike the smelly contraption that is Stinkle Field House. He drank out of a dirty dog dish, not an experience unlike drinking out of those grimy, faulty water fountains of theirs. Just another bulldog, he barked and yapped his way onto the great, big stage of college basketball, all the while catching the breaks that the other bulldogs just couldn't. Sounds to me like good ole Blue II was about as Butler as a Matt Howard elbow or a Brad Stevens douche stare.

Regardless of Blue's unfortunate and embarrassing Butler affiliation, it's always sad to lose a good loyal dog.

Agreed. I'm a dog lover for sure. I love how unbudgingly loyal dogs are. Blue II didn't up and leave for Boston right after he made it to the Big East. He died nobly.

+2 That last tweet from doggie heaven just makes me get weepy and gooey. My old pooch is probably in the last months of his life so I truly feel for Blue IIs owners. Always sad to lose a friend, even when it's time for him to go.

Unless they continue to model themselves after UDump fans who are at their most obnoxious when they have the least to gloat about.

That line didn't work particularly well for Mike Vick's defense team.
Public reps cause private ones are blocked.

As an Indy resident, I can attest that many of the Butler students and fans do grow an actual attachment to their mascot. He is present everywhere, always in public and always available for people to interact with. I have been lucky enough to have Blue II (and their new mascot Trip) come to my work each of the last two years and the handler is awesome with crowds and the dogs are really well trained. My Butler fans are legitimately sad, but let's not act like there is some overreaction of the end of the world.

As I alluded to earlier, they have been weaning in the new mascot, Trip, over the past year or so knowing that Blue II was getting older and would need a replacement. I believe late in the last season they had the "ceremony" to pass the torch from Blue II to Trip. Never fear, the bulldog will still be (t)here.

Isn't 'Trip' sort of a bad name for an athletic mascot? Cause tripping doesn't usually help play, right? Sort of like 'Blob' because athletes are supposed to be fit.

Oh. Wait.

Then again, 'Trip' is what my dog is always trying to make me do. So it sort of works.
