As that little Horizon program continues to sink at the worst time, it becomes time for their self-righteous fans to take a shot at Xavier, and a week shot at that:

If they actually believe they coined "The _____ Way," well, I'm not really sure what else to say.
Every team/university/group does this. The Xavier Way, The Oriole Way, The Ripken Way.

Did they come up with Butler Nation as well?
Jesus Christ who gets upset over something like this?
This is why those idiots are so easy to hate. The ____ Way is a term that's been used forever. I absolutely remember hearing "the Xavier way" (which I always thought was stupid) long before Butler became a relevant program. And I'm sure that plenty of other schools/teams have used long before that. Butler fans are such losers. I cannot wait to destroy them twice this year.

The media has been talking about "The Patriot Way" for a long time. I feel like I've heard the Yankee Way too.
I am more offended that people actually about this at all. It's bland and unoriginal. I don't know why somebody would want to claim ownership of it.

I realize none of this matters, but I was bored and did a "date range" Google search for "The Xavier Way". I began in 2005 and worked my way back to 2002, which is when I found the first appearance, it is from Thad Matta, March 10, 2002:
“It's kind of been our deal all year that we term "the Xavier way,'” coach Thad Matta said. “We never give up.”
Here is the link:
http://enquirer.com/xavier/2002/03/10/xu_xavier_wins.html
I did the same search for "The Butler Way" (you must use the quotation marks, by the way, in order to limit results to cases where the words appear together in that order). I worked my way backwards to 1999, and here is what I found:
-1999: no references
-2000: one reference, but when you view the link the actualy quote is from 2010 in reference to Gordon Hayward. The link:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1142915/
-2001: one reference, but it is a link to the Butler home page which currently starts out with the phrase. In all likelihood this page has been updated several times over the years, so there is no way to determine whether or not it read this way in 2002. The link:
http://www.butler.edu/
-2002: five references, three of the references are to actual butlers, the other two refer to BU. The earliest reference to BU is from Aug 15, 2002, the other from December 29, 2002. The links:
http://www.sharksbasketballcamps.com/camp-instructors.cfm
http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2002/Dec/29/sp/sp01a.html
According to Google, the earliest use of the term in print, and therefore available for others to copy, belongs to Xavier, though only by five months. Given that Thad is the one who used the term, is it possible that it was in use by Butler and Thad brought it to XU? Thad started with X in 2001. The burden of proof seems to be on BU to document that they used it prior to March 10, 2002.

I wouldn't overthink this, Principal. For starters, if you go back ten years, things like that won't necessarily be on the Internet, even if they are happening. In the end, though, it's what other people are saying: "The ____ Way" is hardly original and I would bet a lot that it's been used many times before in college basketball alone, not to mention in other sports. Without even getting into the Xavier vs. Butler issue, the lack of originality makes it ludicrous that Butler fans think they invented the phrase.

UDpride has trademarked "it's a great day to be a flyer."
Can't see a lot of people wanting on that bandwagon. Maybe British Air or somebody.

The Oriole Way has been used for decades since the Earl Weaver days. Butler taking credit for that phrasing is ignorant at best. I will love watching them fail.

I've been living by "The Ballyhoohoo Way" for many years. It's not suggested for the faint if heart.

I think broadway coined the term "The great white way" long ago. I guess butler couldn't use the first option. They love them some small town looking plow boys

Yes. I imagine Butler fans stuttitering a little when they recall things like Xavier taking one of their coaches away.

Let's see how much of the "Butler Way" of 7,400 average attendance drops after they start getting boat raced in the Big East.

I guess it's possible that Matta brought it with him when he took the coaching upgrade. Or it's possible that it was here long before him.
To me Butler has way bigger issues to worry about than this (fanbase wise).

And then, there's this tweet from an obvious Butler fan/student:
“@DevontaeBU2: Trying to bag a milf at International Mall”.
I guess that is the "Butler Way" too. #Disgusting

If Brad Stevens had left a year earlier, would Butler be in the BE? I doubt it.

Couldn't help but notice the young man deleted his comment. It's almost as if David Woods himself hacked into his account to delete it and protect the almighty "Butler Way." All hail!!!

Wow. What a brokedick messageboard.
I really had no idea we were so despised by Butler fans. Does it go back to the MCC days?

I imagine some if goes back to MCC days...though many of thier current fans really weren't around for those days. Literally they weren't born or they didn't care about Butler Basketball. Some of it is from Xavier stealing their coach I imagine.
The feedback I've received directly from Butler fans though is that they think Xavier has an attitude. They think the team does things the wrong way (shot clock game), but team and university acts like they do things the right way. They think they are better than everyone else (and by everyone else they mean Butler), and that they should still be considered the better program than Butler. This has come primarily after Butler gained 2 final 4's...which is kind of ironic to me. IE- Butler hates Xavier for having an attidute about winning, thinking they are better and copying Butler, and responds by having an attidude about winning, thinking they are better than Xavier, and copying Xavier. Well played Bulldogs.

My guess would be yes, as we were the flagship of the MCC back then. However, most of their "Johnny Come Lately" fans aren't old enough to remember the MCC era.
We are going to make them our water fountain this year....twice!! They will rue the day they decided to accept the Big East invite!! Rue it!!
