School of Fish was an LA alternative rock band back in the early 90's. They put out two albums, neither of which sold very well, but the first one had one of the best rock songs ever, in my humble opinion. Three Strange Days The riffs in this tune are strong as onions and it has one of the best transitions from the first half to the last half of any song I know. Amazingly enough, the singer of the band Josh Clayton-Felt died of testicular cancer only 8 years after this live version video. I can never stop whistling this rocker.

Hari and the Karis
My cousin is the front man for this New York band. They are getting some pretty solid reviews and are starting to get pretty popular in some scenes up there. Here's one of their tracks, but I suggest listening to their album here:

Vince Guaraldi was a well-respected jazz pianist whose greatest success came from avenues usually closed to contemporary jazz artists: he enjoyed a hit single at a time when jazz had largely been exiled from the pop charts, and he scored a series of very successful animated television specials, a medium where cookie-cutter pop music was traditionally the order of the day. Vincent Anthony Guaraldi was born in San Francisco, California on July 17, 1928. A loyal son of the Bay Area, Guaraldi graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in the city's Sunset District, and after serving in the military during the Korean War, he returned home and enrolled at San Francisco State University.
But it was in 1964 that Guaraldi took his first step toward the music that would make him most famous. Lee Mendelson and Bill Melendez, a pair of television writers and producers, were working on a documentary about Charles Schulz, the creator of the popular comic strip Peanuts, and they approached Guaraldi to compose the score. The documentary never aired, but when Mendelson and Melendez teamed up with Schulz in 1965 to create an animated Christmas special featuring the Peanuts characters, they wanted a score with a different flavor than most Saturday morning cartoons, and once again asked Guaraldi to collaborate. A Charlie Brown Christmas was an immediate hit with audiences and critics alike, and has become a Yuletide perennial, broadcast every December, and Guaraldi's score -- by turns full of contemplative beauty and brimming with high-spirited joy -- was cited by many as one of the best things about the show.

Banderas was a couple of girls from the UK that put out just one album in the early '90's. Only 10 tracks. They're obscure, but the music is solid and they have a small following with people who do dance mixes and re-mixes. I forget the lead singers name right now, but I'd describe her as a cross between Annie Lennox and Madonna.
Edit: I initially had the song "She Sells" linked, but it went dead so replaced with First Hand.

It took me too long to post this...just like it took too long for Rush to be inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but in 2011, the played a concert at the Q Arena in downtown Cleveland. One of the best shows I have ever been to, and so good for Rush (who has always loved Cleveland and Cleveland loves them back) that they made a video of the whole show and have sold it and shown it on Palladia. This is a great take on Working Man....

Yep. Voted in in 2012...mainly because they were #1 in the fan vote portion in 2012.

But as great as that sounds, they did not write it. The original by The Nerves was pretty feckin' good. Yes, Blondie sounds better, but they had the hind sight of how to improve it. The Nerves didn't last too long and each member went on to form their own band and all are still professional musicians.

I'll agree the RRHOF is a big joke, but those two groups are hardly as egregious as Ruth Brown, Buffalo Springfield, The E-Street Band, The Comets, Dion, The Famous Flames, The Flamingos, Heart, The Impressions, Lovin' Spoonful, The Moonglows, Laura Nyro, Randy Newman, Gene Pitney, The Pretenders, Bonnie Raitt, The Staple Singers, and many other marginal performers.
Meanwhile Link Wray is still waiting.

Kiss is mediocre musically. Derivative. Average pop songs. But they did put on a hell of a show. Iconic for their era. I still wouldn't vote them in.
Rush is the ultimate nerdy-dude band. Watched a recent documentary, which was interesting, but I now hate them moreso. One decent album, but the majority is wank-off city. Even Lifeson and Pert hated some of their own stuff. And we have Cleveland's WMMS to thank for giving Rush a reason to tour America in the first place. Yikes.
Iggy and the Stooges, however, are one of the most important bands ever. And I wouldn't even say I'm the biggest fan, but it's just true. Multiple albums are highly influential to today's musicians. Since they've been active for so long, they cover a lot of styles, but were certainly one of the fore bearers to punk, along with the MC5. Some crazy good songs that never got radio play b/c they weren't clean or sugary. Certainly not successful as several groups, but the guy is still going strong making albums. He's still relevant putting stuff out and touring. And one of the most iconic performances in rock 'n roll was done by him, right here at the Cincinnati Pop Festival in 1970 (when rock was relatively still a babe in music).
http://citybeat.com/cincinnati/imgs/hed/art20906widea.jpg
It's stupid to have a HOF for rock music. The whole idea of rock is to be new and fresh, not pigeon-holed, and often rebellious. It's even more of a joke that it's in Cleveland, where the phase may have been coined, but otherwise has had little-to-no-impact on the greater world of pop music. Even the president of the RRHOF is quoted saying the three cities laying claim to the birth of rock 'n roll are New Orleans, Memphis, and Cincinnati. It's hilarious that the induction ceremony is held in NYC and not the home of the HOF. What a joke. It's not Clevelander's fault. The place never should have gone there.
Paul Allen actually built a very cool interactive and historical tribute to pop music in Seattle: Experience Music Project. That approach seems more clever than a HOF, although both cover similar ground.

(The Staple Singers were anything but marginal. One of the most important bands of their era.)

I attended that Cincinnati Pop Festival at Crosley Field on June 13, 1970. It was the last time that I was in the Grand Old Lady because the Reds moved to Riverfront shortly after that in mid-season.
By the way, it's in Cleveland because we wanted it more than anyplace else...including New York, so there 's that.
That is probably where my disdain for Iggy started. Other acts on that all day deal were Traffic, Grand Funk Railroad, Bob Seeger, Alice Cooper, Mountain, 10 Years After, Mott the Hoople, Bloodrock and Brownsville Station, among others. Iggy was the worst of the lot IMO.
BTW, how's this for a weekend double dip? Janis Joplin & Full Tilt Boogie Band along with Seatrain at Louisville's Freedom Hall on Friday night, then the Pop Festival on Saturday. Quite the weekend.

Warren Zevon was great. Stand in the Fire is one my favorite live albums. David Letterman has been a shell of his former self for about 15 years but one of the most touching things I've ever sen is when he dedicated an entire show to Zevon.
But sirthought is right, the whole HOF idea is stupid. It's so subjective - record sales, influence, longevity, personal tastes? Just what are the criteria? There are certain bands/acts I definitely think should be in (Spinners) but who's to say my taste in music is better than anyone else's (even though it is).

Xavier hosted some pretty incredible concerts back in my day. We were horrible in sports, but damn good at staging great concerts. One of the more memorable was on October 11, 1969 where the local Cincy Band Sacred Mushroom opened for Quicksilver Messenger Service.....in a FREE Concert at Schmidt. There was nothing going on at campus that weekend because the football team played at Ohio U and got rolled so the Fieldhouse was wide open. On Friday these posters started showing up around campus about this free show that was going to be going on and by showtime, a couple thousand people showed up to just sit on the floor with no chairs to see the bands. Awesome.
Everybody knows about QMS, but what about Sacred Mushroom?
Sacred Mushroom was an American psychedelic rock and blues band from Cincinnati, Ohio formed in the late 1960s by Timothy and Lawrence Goshorn. The band had Larry Goshorn (Who went on to be in Pure Prarie League) on lead guitar and vocals, Danny Goshorn on vocals, Joe Steward on bass, Fred Fogwell on rhythm guitar and Doug Hamilton on drums. As a local success, the group opened for the Quicksilver Messenger Service at Xavier University and also Big Brother & The Holding Company with Janis Joplin at The Music Hall.

I've seen Josh live about 8 times. Never been disappointed. Guy doesn't have a pretentious bone in his body.
First time I ever saw him was in about 2002 in Dayton at Canal Street Tavern. He opened up for Jimmie Dale Gilmore. I was one of about five people who was there to hear Josh play. He just sat on a stool, played his guitar, and sang. Most of the songs he played were off "Golden Age of Radio" which he had just released. After his set I talked to him for about 20 minutes outside. Great guy. It's amazing how far he has come since then. He's been on Letterman twice, toured the world, had his music featured in TV dramas, and has released a string of albums that only seem to get better over time.

Warren Zevon was always, in my mind, one of the most underrated musicians around. He wrote an incredible amount of hits for people like Linda Ronstadt and others, and had a few himself including "Werewolves of London" with one of the great lyrics ever written:
"I saw a Werewolf drinking a Piña Colada at Trader Vic's...His hair was perfect"
His last album Life Will Kill Ya was recorded as he was literally dying of cancer...and it is superb. I highly recommend it. But for this thread, I wanted to pull a funky, fun tune from almost 40 years ago that has almost gotten lost in time. He didn't play guitar in this video, but, trust me, he did on the record.

Everybody knows The Steve Miller Band from songs like "The Joker", but in the early days in the late 1960's Boz Scaggs was in the group and they produced some exceptional albums like Sailor and Children of the Future. a trademark of those albums were "suites" of songs that bled into each other very cooly.
Below is Stepping Stone. The beginning of which is bleeding from the ending of another great acoustic tune "Baby's Calling Me Home". So nice.

If you like Vic then you need to check out Chance the Rapper.
As for me, I'm just gonna leave this song right here for everyone to listen to and love.

They were the highlight of Bunbury for me. I saw on their FB feed that they were going to be on Seth Meyers last night. Didn't catch it but interesting to hear they weren't good. I love their song "Car Radio" that they were supposed to do on the show.

I wouldn't judge them by one performance on a late night show.
One of my favorite singers is Josh Ritter and the first time he played on Letterman I was disappointed. He was not the same Josh Ritter I had seen live around 8 times before. Josh Ritter is one of the best songwriters alive today, imo. The guy always puts on a great show, but for some reason, he just wasn't "on" in that Letterman performance.

Wasn't the best rendition of the song but I thought it was pretty good. I'm biased though. I became an instant fan after seeing them last year. Been cool to see them gain so much fame and appearing on everything. By the way, there's video on YT of the Bunbury performance. Their rendition of the song on the recent MTV Movie Awards can be seen on MTV's site. That was good. The music video for the song that's on their YT page which was shot in Columbus still might be my favorite version. Hell before Phonezoo disappeared from the interwebs, I made a ringtone of the song and it's been on my phone since August.

The I Don't Know If It's Right single by Evelyn "Champagne" King went to #23 in 1978. Really though, the radio version of the song was a dog. Very flat and monotone. It was the remixed and extended promo cut given out to disco's that was good. King was only like 16, maybe 17 when this was recorded. The vocal breakdown in the first minute and half of the song is pretty impressive.

I watched the Billboard Music Awards the other night.
I really don't enjoy these shows overall, and this one in particular doesn't strike me as much a marker for good music, as much as what is popular at the moment. But amongst the tedious crap (J-Lo, Ariana Grande, Bulldog, Ricky Martin) there were some fun performances.
I basically watched for this: the Michael Jackson hologram thing was baffling and amazing. I've heard two songs from the new record and they seem better than much of what he released for several years.
The Lorde performance was much better for her than most of what I've seen her do and I enjoy that song "Tennis Courts." She's just a young girl who struck fame way before she was ready as a performer on this stage.
The Flaming Lips are a favorite of mine and I thought the Miley Cyrus/Beatles thing was not too weird for them, but it wasn't that good. Miley does a lot of dumb stuff, but she can sing when she's given the chance. I just wish they'd rock the song more. They used to be a real rock band instead of a side show.
Strangely, I might have enjoyed the Katy Perry performance the most. Yeah, her songs are pure sugar and little substance, but what an entertainer. She has a great voice and I love the sense of humor with her outfits.

The Gibson Brothers are a France-based musical group, who had their greatest success during the disco boom of the late 1970s. Their best known hit singles included "Cuba" and "Que Sera Mi Vida".
The three brothers were born on Martinique in the West Indies. They recorded their first single "Come To America" in Paris in 1976, and both it and its follow-up "Non Stop Dance" made the charts in Europe, where they toured successfully. The following year they released "Heaven", which was picked up by TK Records in the U.S.
In 1978 they recorded "Cuba". The mix of disco beats, Latin percussion, soulful vocals and a catchy tune propelled the song to #1 in several countries, and earned them four gold records worldwide. In the UK it made #41 on its initial release, and #12 when reissued in 1980. Like their other hits, it was written and produced by Daniel Vangarde and the Belgian producer Jean Kluger. The Gibson Brothers had three further big hits in 1979 and 1980, "Ooh! What A Life", "Que Sera Mi Vida" (a Nelly Byl song which sold over 5 million copies worldwide), and "Mariana". They have continued to record and tour worldwide.

Damn you! You just cost me a grand plus! I still have my sub woofers, but left the good speakers behind in Florida. Great music deserves great sound. I hate the research/learning process. I can't make a recommendation from recent experience, but if I were looking, I'd look at Bowers & Wilkins first.
edit: The most recent quality speakers I had were JBL's and they were great, but they were larger speakers. Also, you almost have to take a look at Bose, they probably lead the quality small speaker market. I had some trouble with their electronics, but I doubt you'd have any problems with straight speakers.

I don't know if one is looking for wireless or wired, but I'd look into Harman Kardon. Great technology and superb sound.

I have Harman Kardon upstairs, but nothing matches my Garrard turntable matched with my Pioneer cherry wood speakers. A well-preserved vinyl LP on that system remains the ultimate. I have that system in my basement man cave and I'll retreat down there and crank it up. The wife is safe upstairs.
Call me a pompous, pretentious audiophile who is stuck in the 1970's if you will, but I love rich sound and the old, crafted stuff puts it out.
That being said, I have a real interest to see if Neil Young's Pono sound system that is under development has merit. Without quality speakers and/or headphones, however, no system produces properly.

"I Love You Always Forever" is a single released in 1996 by Welsh singer Donna Lewis, from her debut album, Now in a Minute. Inspired by the H. E. Bates novel Love for Lydia, it was successful, reaching number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and staying there for nine weeks during the summer of 1996, kept from number one by Los Del Rio's "Macarena". Despite this, the song was number one on the Hot 100 Airplay chart for twelve weeks and the Top 40 Mainstream for eleven weeks, becoming one of the most played songs of the 1990s. The song therefore is tied for fourth place among songs with the longest runs at #2 and tied at second for most weeks at Top 40 Mainstream. The song peaked at number two on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart and at number five on the UK Singles Chart.
This is the "Philly Remix" of the song that was included as the last track on the album.

You may well be a pompous, pretentious audiophile stuck in the 70's, and that could make you my hero!!! I relied on your type back in the day and we enjoyed some of the best music anywhere near campus. My vinyl melted, sadly. Oops. My Bose speakers wired to the last house were OK with good sub woofers (which I still have), but nothing like the Advents. It's wired to both rooms here but still limited on speaker space. Some kind of a tower would be better than a mini-fridge. Never heard of the Pono thing. Do you prefer the Pioneer? I am open to suggestions. I still have an old Yamaha receiver that I suspect is better than anything I've bought in the last 30 years. Speaker suggestions are welcome.

Saw The Revivalists at the 20th Century on Monday. Had never heard a bit of their music but came away impressed. You can pick up a lot of influences in their work, and it has a strong New Orleans feel to it. The sax player was the best I've ever seen live. Long set of all originals, and an encore of Baba O'Riley and Forget About Dre, which both totally rocked the house and have quite possibly never been performed back to back by anyone else.
If they swing through your town, check them out, especially if you like featured horns.

By the way...and I've been meaning to post this for a while...
Jack White's latest album- Lazaretto abjectly sucks. There are maybe 2 1/2 songs that are respectable and the rest is nothing more than a garbled mush mish mash of barely connected noise. Such a disappointment after Blunderbuss and his other work with the Stripes, Dead Weather and Raconteurs.
It appears that he just mailed it in on this one. I'm putting this on the shelf along with King Crimson's Red and Neil Young's Arc as the absolute worst albums in my collection.
Don't even steal those records.

There are two outstanding....and I mean OUTSTANDING record stores that have tons of old vinyl records up here in Cleveburg- Blue Arrow Records on the east side next to Beachland Ballroom, and Hofsfrau Records next to the Capitol Theatre on the near west side.
Was browsing through Blue Arrow the other day and found a treasure- A mint condition copy with a perfect cover of The Who's Quadrophenia for $10. That was a seminal Rock Opera album that they put out in Quadrophonic stereo sound in about 1970. They sell vinyl in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame store, but wanted $40 for a new copy. Sorry!
I love vinyl. The sound is so much richer through a good system.

Oh Happy Day is a 1967 gospel music arrangement of an 18th-century hymn. Recorded by the Edwin Hawkins Singers, it became an international hit in 1969, reaching No. 4 in the US and No. 2 in both the UK singles chart and Irish Singles Chart. It has since become a gospel music standard.
The arrangement is notable for the muted piano, drum and bass backing and the dominant use of the left-hand stereo channel by the lead singer.
Edwin Hawkins’ gospel style arrangement of the hymn "Oh, Happy Day" has a long pedigree: It began as a hymn written in the mid-18th century ("O happy day, that fixed my choice") by English clergyman Philip Doddridge (based on Acts 8:35) set to an earlier melody (1704) by J. A. Freylinghausen. By the mid-19th century it had been given a new melody by Edward F. Rimbault, who also added a chorus, and was commonly used for baptismal or confirmation ceremonies in the UK and USA. The 20th century saw its adaptation from 3/4 to 4/4 time and this new arrangement by Hawkins, which contains only the repeated Rimbault refrain, with all of the original verses being omitted.
Hawkins' arrangement quickly became a “standard” and has been recorded by hundreds of artists. It was included on the RIAA Songs of the Century list and won Hawkins a Grammy Award for Best Soul Gospel Performance in 1970 (performed by the Edwin Hawkins Singers). He is still active and is now an elder statesman for the Contemporary Gospel style which "Oh Happy Day" helped found.

Raspberry JAM was a short lived christian band in southern California. They only put out 2 albums I believe. For the 2nd album, Oceanic, they had added a female singer. They have a haunting eurotech sound. Some Depeche Mode, Primal Scream influence, can even hear some Pink Floyd and grunge. Oceanic has a half dozen really good songs. I especially like one called Burns Like Fire, but this is the title track.

Wiki:
Father Norman James O'Connor, "The Jazz Priest",[1] (November 20, 1921 - June 29, 2003[2]) was born in Detroit, Michigan, on November 20, 1921. He became interested in jazz music at an early age and began playing piano with local jazz bands while in high school. He continued to work occasionally as a musician into the 1940s, but had abandoned the thought of music as a career by the time he enrolled at Catholic University in Washington. He wrote his doctoral thesis on the aesthetics of popular music.
Ordained as a Roman Catholic priest of the Paulist order in 1948, Father O'Connor sometimes included jazz music in his services.[3]
In 1954, three years after becoming the Catholic chaplain at Boston University, he was named to the board of the first Newport Jazz Festival. He would appear at the event in his priest collar, and serve as the master of ceremonies for concerts and moderator of panel discussions. His introduction of John Coltrane at the festival in 1965 can be heard on Coltrane's New Thing at Newport (as well as My Favorite Things: Coltrane at Newport), and his introduction of Dave Brubeck at the 1971 festival can be heard on Brubeck's The Last Set at Newport. Fr. O'Connor also introduced Duke Ellington and the members of his orchestra (along with personal quips) at the 1956 Festival, as heard on Duke Ellington's Ellington at Newport. O'Connor wrote a weekly jazz column for The Boston Globe and freelanced for Down Beat, Metronome, and other music magazines. He did jazz radio shows on WGBH-FM for many years previous to, and overlapping with, the advent of TV at WGBH, in 1955. When television started, he continued in the new medium on Jazz with Father O'Connor. His guests included national jazz figures, like Cannonball Adderley and George Shearing, among others, as well as local Boston musicians like "Boots" Mussulli, Herb Pomeroy and Al and Buzzy Drootin.[4]
In 1962, O'Connor became the director of radio and television for the Paulist Fathers in New York. He also hosted a syndicated radio show and the local TV show, "Dial M for Music",[5] on WCBS-TV (New York City). The show was popular in the New York area, and many great jazz musicians performed on it; including Duke Ellington (in a trio with Horace Silver and Johnny Hodges), The Modern Jazz Quartet, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band, Bill Evans, Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson, Peggy Lee, Mongo Santamaría, Gene Krupa, and Joe Williams, among others. O'Connor became a fixture on the New York jazz scene, and remained one even after being named director of the Mount Paul Novitiate, a church training center in Oak Ridge, New Jersey, four years later.
In 1980, Father O'Connor was hired as the executive director of Straight and Narrow, a drug and alcohol treatment center in Paterson, New Jersey. In his later years, his profile in the jazz world became considerably lower. Nevertheless, he remained the "Jazz Priest" to the end, producing benefit concerts by Marian McPartland and other musicians for Straight and Narrow with the help of his longtime friend George Wein. O'Connor retired in 2002.
He died of a heart attack at the age of 81 in Wayne, New Jersey, on June 29, 2003.
Just a fun and interesting lead in.

Jazz. According to Wikipedia her agent was actually a Jesuit priest!

Here's something VERY tasty from an unbelieveably underrated band Crack the Sky. They're from Wierton, West Virginia and actually had their first album named "Debut Album of the Year" by Rolling Stone in 1975. They have just never seemed to get the traction and radio play, however- except up here on WMMS, Cleveland's legendary progressive station.
This one is from their album Dog City from 1990. Bluesy mouth harp, and a Claptonesque guitar solo that weaves through the last two minutes.
Mr. President. Enjoy the longer album version with the full solo.

In August 1963, Smith entered a talent contest at the Frontier Ranch country music park near Columbus, Ohio. Performing Jean Shepard's "I Thought of You", Smith won the talent contest and five silver dollars.[10] That day at the park, country artist Bill Anderson heard Smith perform and was impressed by her voice. In January 1964, Smith ran into Anderson again at a country music package concert, where he invited her to perform with him on Ernest Tubb's Midnight Jamboree program in Nashville, Tennessee.[11] After performing on the program, Smith returned to Nashville that May to record demos by Anderson that he planned on pitching to other country artists. Anderson's manager Hubert Long brought the demo recording to RCA Victor Records, where producer Chet Atkins heard it. Also impressed by her vocals, Atkins offered Smith a recording contract, and she eventually signed with the label on June 24, 1964.
During this time, in Connie Smith's career, she was at her very peak and was releasing various hit singles on the country charts every year. Since her release of her #1 hit "Once a Day" in 1964 she was one of country music's most successful stars. The year 1967 was no different when she released "Cincinnati, Ohio". The song was of course about the city of Cincinnati, Ohio. The song rose to #4 on the country charts, becoming one of her many top ten hits she had in the 1960s, and also becoming one of her signature songs. The song talked about how a woman was so tired and just wanted to get back home to her hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio. The song struck a chord with audiences and so it therefore became a hit for her. The song was written by country singer-songwriter Bill Anderson, who originally discovered Connie Smith back in 1964. Anderson wrote many of Smith's big hits in the 60s, including "Once a Day". "Cincinnati, Ohio" was released on her 1967 album Connie Smith Sings Bill Anderson. It also be found on her compilations The Essential Connie Smith and Super Hits, which were both released in the 1990s.
A cover version exists, done by the Osborne Brothers from the 1990 release "Hillbilly Fever". Although the song also is about the city of Cincinnati, Ohio, the city never actually adopted the song as their city song.

One of the rare father-daughter duos in country music history, the Kendalls were also the most successful, racking up a series of hits during the late '70s and early '80s. Daughter Jeannie sang lead on most of the group's material, while father Royce typically double-tracked his harmony vocals behind her and shunned the spotlight on most occasions. Though their production was certainly radio-friendly, they were more grounded in country tradition than many of their contemporaries, working elements of bluegrass, honky tonk, and country gospel into their music.
It wasn't until 1977 that they signed to Ovation and released the smash hit "Heaven's Just a Sin Away," which went all the way to number one on the country charts and won a Grammy for Best Country Vocal by a Duo or Group. the Kendalls visited the country Top Ten regularly up into the mid-'80s, establishing a penchant for cheating songs; their biggest hits of the late '70s included "It Don't Feel Like Sinnin' to Me," "Pittsburgh Stealers," the number one "Sweet Desire," and "I Had a Lovely Time." In 1981, they switched from Ovation to Mercury and scored more hits with songs like "You'd Make an Angel Wanna Cheat," "Teach Me to Cheat," and a third number one, "Thank God for the Radio."
Changing tastes in country music meant that their last Top 40 hit came in 1985, and although the Kendalls continued to record for several different labels into the late '80s, their hitmaking run was over. They continued to tour, however, and for a time took up residency in Branson, MO. In 1997, they signed with Rounder Records and began work on a new, bluegrass-flavored album, but Royce died of a stroke on May 22, 1998, just prior to a show in La Crosse, WI. Several tracks had been completed, and Jeannie eventually returned to the project, completing it as her solo debut; Jeannie Kendall was finally released in early 2003.

QCC put out just one or maybe two albums. When a female lead was needed, it always fell to Yolanda Harris who has a great voice. She also has a solo album, which I don't have but probably worth looking for.

QCC's neighbor, Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir has put out a dozen or so albums, and are still producing. This song is from their first album back in the '80's.

Vinyl records can be had so cheap now that I've been picking them up a little at a time over the last few months. I don't even have a record player. Actually I did buy one at a yard sale really cheap, but it needs too many parts and I'm going to look for another. One of my purchases recently included a bunch of blues records. This is not one of them, but worth a listen..

Tried to find Maggie's Farm, but only got the Dylan version. It may be his song, but his is not the best version. Bluesbreakers killed it, I thought.

I don't know the blues artists very much really. Today I picked up a bunch of albums from ZZ Hill who I'd never heard of before today.
ZZ died in 1984 at 49.

I am by ne means an "expert", but I had some Bluesbreakers stuff back at XU which has now probably melted somewhere. If you're into it, look this stuff up. As I said, great version of Maggie's Farm and other good stuff. Some pretty damn good musicians! I mean, Mayall, Clapton, Cream, Fleetwood Mac and Stones connections are a good start, right? If you stumble across something, I'd grab it.

Alright 82 you sent me thru Yardbirds, Jeff Becks HOF induction, and then Stevie Ray Vaughn MTV Unplugged. I think SRV might've been the greatest guitarist ever. Took his craft serious. Check out the fret work.

I suspect that may not have been his first time with a guitar in hand. Just guessing.

Brothers Richard and Solomon Ho'opi'i are winners of the National Heritage Award for their preservation of a form of native Hawaiian singing that is known as "leo ki'eki'e." The style features men singing in a high falsetto. Photos of the generously proportioned Ho'opi'i Brothers belie the sweet nature of their singing voices, which are often described as angelic.
Solomon Ho'opi'i and his younger brother Richard, who were both born in the 1940s, grew up in Kahakuloa, a village on Maui. They were surrounded by a very traditional and music-loving family, with both parents playing a strong part in developing the brothers' regard for traditional music. Their mother was involved in church activities and sang many of the hymns, while their father was a music instructor. The village's elders, known as the Kupuna, passed on many of the songs that the brothers still sing today. The Ho'opi'i Brothers put out their first recording, No Ka 'Oi, in 1976, and they continued to record for the next quarter of a century. The Mountain Apple Company released Ho'omau, their first release in CD form, in 2000.
They maintain that their singing ability is a God-given gift, and they make sure that a prayer precedes each of their vocal performances. Their music often features the accompaniment of a ukulele, and sometimes even a Western yodel, an example of which can be heard on "Hawaiian Cowboy." Their award-winning singing has been featured in a number of documentaries and movies, and has taken the brothers to such events as the Hawaiian State Folklife Festival and the Smithsonian Folklife Festival.
In addition to recording, Richard Ho'opi'i instructs groups of both senior citizens and school children in the history of native Hawaiian music, as well as in the art of the ukulele. He is a recipient of the Na Hoku Hanohano Award. The brothers were honored with a Folk Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1996.
