But things haven’t been going all that well for Barnes of late. Last season, his Longhorns went 16-18 and lost in the CBI, extending their streak to five consecutive seasons without making it out of the first weekend of the NCAA tournament. That streak will likely continue into next season, as Jaylen Bond, Julien Lewis and Sheldon McClellan followed Myck Kabongo out the door.
How bad are things getting for Barnes down in Austin?
In a place where they couldn’t possibly care less about college basketball, local columnists starting to take notice.

________

Personally I think Rick Barnes personally killed any hopes his UT squad had against X during "the Run" with his ridiculous technical fouls. That put the game away.

It's surprising, but Texas athletics are a mess right now. The football is mediocre, the basketball is mediocre to bad and the baseball is just plain rotten.

I believe they are in need of not only a new Basketball Coach but perhaps a new AD. With that fancy new tv station you'd think they want to up their game.

The Texas Athletic Department is a mess. With the money and resources UT has, they should be a dominant force in every sport. But for some reason they just accept mediocrity (in Basketball, Football and Baseball anyway). Deloss Dodds is the worst AD in major Division 1 athletics.

Another season of a near empty Erwin Center should be enough for Texas to finally start looking in another direction. It would be one of the best jobs in basketball to have. You would get a huge paycheck with not a lot of pressure to win. Mack Brown's seat might be a little hotter since football is king here. But the real change that needs to happen for Texas to turn things around is Deloss has to go.

What the hell kind of name is Deloss?

My experience is that Texas cares about basketball quite a bit, at least in the last fifteen years. They've disliked Barnes for awhile, but still average in the top thirty for attendance. They certainly care enough to be angry with the recent results.

They care about Texas basketball, but are nowhere near as passionate about it as they are football. But that isn't a shock, it's a football school in a football state.

I live in Austin and went to some games this past season. The Erwin Center was a ghost town for most of them other than the UNC and Kansas games. Yeah, they averaged 11,000+ purchased tickets a game, but other than those games I mentioned it was never close to being that many fans at the games. Hardly any students show up to the games. And I can't blame people for not using their tickets, Texas was awful. If they wise up and fire Barnes and bring in a good replacement the fans will come back.

I would guess they average 11,000 purchased tickets as result of requiring basketball tickets to get a certain level of premium football seating?

I know during the Huggins era to get premium UC hoops tix you had to buy football tickets.

Sounds about right. I always equated it to Louisville football. They love it when it's good, and care enough about it to complain when it's not.

College basketball is the ultimate fair weather sport. There aren't many schools at all who draw well when they're not NCAA Tournament caliber teams, yet just about everyone will sell the place out when they are a tournament caliber team. Look at Miami, FL this year, and look at them in virtually every year prior to this year. For Texas to suck and still average around 11k doesn't seem like a complete lack of interest. I'm not saying that it's as big as Texas football, but I think it's way off the mark to say they don't care at all.

Shoot, I don't care about Texas basketball at all, yet here I am posting in this thread.

Seriously though, Rick Barnes should go. Wasn't he on record a couple years back saying his primary focus was getting players into the nba?

If Barnes gets canned expect Buzz Williams to be his replacement. Williams would love to have the Texas job.

Texas just lost another player. Ioannis Papapetrou signed with a Euro pro team. Best returning player, Texas is gonna be one of the worst Major conference teams in basketball. If that isn't enough for Texas to can Barnes then I don't know what will be.

Yeah...so I was a bit off on this one. Gotta hand it to Barnes, he's done a heck of a job with this Texas team. I went to the Texas-Kansas game, it was sold out and a good atmosphere (Erwin Center is still a dump though). Guess I'll eat that crow about Barnes and the Texas program.

Before the season started I would've agreed with you completely. How you can lose your 3 top scorers and a solid big man from a terrible team and become a force in a stacked Big 12 the next season is nothing short of an incredible coaching job by Barnes.

Until yesterday, maybe I could think about Barnes and Texas. At this point, I am concerned about the home team that plays in the Cintas Center. The prospects of the three game conference losing streak and Providence at home next Saturday keeps me up at night. Well, not really keeping me up, but I thought that sounded good. Yet, it does strike me as a stark reality. As for TX, it always does my heart good when they lose at anything,
