Eddie Jordan is not a graduate of Rutgers University, as his biography on the school website suggests: http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/2013/05/10/rutgers-coach-eddie-jordan-didnt-graduate-from-rutgers/2151269/ If this results in his dismissal, I wonder what, if any, impact this could have on Junior Etou's commitment.

Jordan himself has always only said that he was an alumnus. That doesn't necessarily mean that you have graduated.
Rutgers itself is the entity that screwed up by press releasing that he was a graduate.
Rutgers is an abject embarrassment. Nice add B1G. You now have a Fordham in your club.

There are really two issues to keep in mind:
(1) Did Jordan, on his resume, list himself as a graduate of the university? If yes, then he lied. If not, then the university itself is at fault.
(2) Does the job itself, as a state position, require Jordan to hold a college degree? If yes, then no matter who is at fault, he is not qualified for the position he holds.

Seems to me that any way you cut it, this is a failure on the part of Rutgers. Either it botched its press release (most likely) or it failed to recognize that an applicant had falsely claimed to be a graduate of that very institution. I think the former is far more likely because they chased him down -- I doubt he ever submitted a job application and in any event they can't possibly have reasonably relied in any claim by him that he is a Rutgers grad.
I don't see Jordan losing his job over this.

I cannot believe they would hire someone without a college degree to a head coaching position. I guess they didn't realize that until it's too later. Would have been far too difficult to give their own registrar's office a call to confirm.

I think you're kidding yourself. As this article states, Jordan not only knew he didn't graduate, but he listed that he graduated on his resume(s): http://espn.go.com/new-york/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/9262772/registrar-office-says-new-rutgers-hoops-coach-eddie-jordan-graduate Now, he's trying to explain it away with claims that he didn't register for courses properly, but nonetheless completed the appropriate course work. I bet you he doesn't even coach a game.

Well, I don't see anywhere in the article that he listed that he graduated on his resume. In fact the only reference to his resume was by a third party inquiry.
To wit:
""Rutgers sought Eddie for the head coach position as a target-of-opportunity hire based on his remarkable public career," Rutgers said in a release. "Eddie Jordan was inducted into the Rutgers Hall of Distinguished Alumni in 2004 and he has been a part of the Rutgers family since before 1977."
In fact, even the Rutgers release says there that he was an "Alumni" which doesn't necessarily mean that someone has to graduate.
Charles, you may be right, but Jordan does have coaching chops and background. I still see nowhere where he out and out lied. None of us know what his "resume" said exactly, or whether he really had to submit one to a place where he went to school. Charles, your earlier point about whether the job requirements, as Rutgers being a State University having certain criteria, call for a degree could be the final factor here.
If he's that close, though, a summer class may get him over the top.

I just pulled this quotation out of the article: "After the semester, Jordan said he then left for Old Dominion to become an assistant, and he put on résumés that he graduated from Rutgers in 1985, not 1977, when he finished playing."

I bet you are wrong. Rutgers is going to fire him for lying to them about graduating for their school? I'm not sure who would look worse in that scenario. Actually, yes I do. Rutgers. So I suspect we will see more and more hedging and calling him a "member of the family" until it all blows over.

Also, here is a job posting for the available assistant coach position at Rutgers: http://uhrapps.rutgers.edu/jobs/JobDetail.aspx?pst_num=13-001012 Guess what, under "job requirements," it says, "Requires a bachelor's degree."

Here's a quote for you:
"Rutgers acknowledged Friday it 'was in error when it reported that Eddie Jordan had earned a degree' but said his position does not require him to have one. 'Rutgers sought Eddie for the head coach position as a target-of-opportunity hire based on his remarkable public career,' Rutgers said in a release. But OK. He'll be fired. Sure...

Yeah. Because Rutgers has never initially made supportive statements about employees in the past, and then ultimately terminated those employees.

FWIW, from www.m-w.com, the definition of alumni:
"a person who has attended or has graduated from a particular school, college, or university"

That's a terrible definition. Alumni is plural. That's the definition of alumnus. Or alumna.

I think they'd be stupid to fire him for this. You don't have to graduate to be considered an alumni.
I can think of several public figures who went to my university, but did not graduate and were still considered alums.

He should be fired if he lied on his resume. And he should be allowed to resign if he's not a graduate.

I am not sure why, but I couldn't care less about this one. Rutgers gets what they deserve on this one. Either way, the still look like crap.

Eddie Jordan is headed "Back to School" (Link (http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/06/07/its-back-to-school-for-new-rutgers-head-coach-eddie-jordan/))
Jordan took classes during his first stint at Rutgers with that goal in mind in the 1980s, but life and administrative red tape did the veteran coach no favors when it came to completing his studies.
After a long stint in the NBA, which included three head coaching jobs, Jordan finds himself back on the campus he once called home…and back in the classroom (http://www.nj.com/rutgersbasketball/index.ssf/2013/06/eddie_jordan_calls_decision_ta.html#incart_m-rpt-1).
Jordan’s currently enrolled in two classes at Rutgers, but according to Brendan Prunty of the Newark Star-Ledger Jordan’s original major is no longer offered by the school. So instead of receiving a degree in Health and Physical Education, Jordan is working towards a degree in Labor Studies and Employment Relations.
