Any idea if we'll be allowed to stay in this tournament?

Yes we are allowed because the paperwork for the tournament was signed while we were still a member of the A-10. Xavier has requested to be placed opposite the bracket from Villanova etc. but there are no guarantees.

yeah we should be ok for Alantis. The bigger question mark will be Nike's Phil Knight bday tournament in 2017. There are two 8 team tournaments for that and as of now X, Butler and Georgetown supposed to participate. Good chance one of those teams (most likely either X or Butler) gets replaced.

any suggestions for someone looking to go to this tourney for the first time (though not to the Bahamas)?

It's kind of pricey. I believe tickets are over $50 per game. So, just seeing the three Xavier games will cost you over $150. I believe you can get a team package which gurantees you tickets to the three games your team is playing in. I would do this.

The games are at the Casino the ball room. So, you would literally be staying at the site of the venue. The rooms are not cheap. If you're certain you want to go, I'd make reservations now before all the less expensive rooms are gone.

This is too rich for my blood. That, and I only see my parents two or three times a year, and Thanksgiving is one of those times. I realize my finances may not be the same as other people's, but once you factor in the air fair, the tickets, the room, and what is undoubtedly overpriced food and drink, it's just not worth it to me. I can go to Europe for less.

....having said all that, it is an amazing event from what I understand. If you go to something like that, you shouldn't worry about money anyway. You'll drive yourself crazy if you do.

Was just checking the Battle 4 Atlantis website and they still have just 7 of 8 teams announced so far - Xavier, Kansas, UTEP, Villanova, Wake Forest, Tennessee, USC.

So, depending on the bracket, Xavier could play Nova, Wake, and Tennessee, all teams that we already have scheduled during the season. That's no fun.

Edit - Also, read this on wikipedia. Wow.
"The tournament is known for being the richest Division I Men’s pre-season college basketball tournament. Schools are awarded $2 million in exchange for their participation in the event."

Seriously? That is almost as much as we will get from our annual TV deal with Fox in the new Big East....and for one event?

They must have some serious sponsors to raise that type of coin. Geesh!

So it's clear that X is in for Atlantis in 2013. Just so I can get my travel plans in order, can someone confirm for me that X is set for Orlando in 2014?

Damn I wish I was retired and could just drop a shit load of money and go to Atlantis. That is going to be one hell of an event both on and off the court.

there is a hotel that is right across the street from Atlantis that my friends have stayed at before and it saved them a lot of money. They were still able to use the casino and pools at Atlantis.

Doing big east tourney. flights from clt to NYC for under 200 in advance. And if you stay in one of the hotels in the jersey city waterfront they are an easy 100 cheaper a night than the manhattan. And path train dumps you out a block from MSG!

I haven't looked into it yet, but I thought I remembered hearing that in order to go to the games, you had to be staying at the resort itself. Am I off?

They have Mark Cuban. Sort of. He owns AXS TV, which carries some of the games. I have no idea how much he pays for it.

I am not familiar with the hotel across the street from Atlantis, but from what I remember, most of the area around Atlantis is like a 3rd world country. Unless you want cocaine, guns, or to be robbed, I wouldn't venture too far out of the resort.

The Bahamas is a third world country, so that would sort of make sense.

Just stayed in Atlantis back in January. Thought I would be smart going to get a couple cases of beer at the grocery instead of paying $6.50 for a 12 oz can around the pools. It was worse than just buying them by the pools. A case of bud light was $54, and the taxi ride was 40, and yes, it is rough outside of atlantis. Best advice. Buy tax and duty free liquor and make yourself mixed drinks the entire time.

Reads to me like you saved $70 (plus tips savings).

The area directly outside of Atlantis is fine. But about a mile or more outside of that, across the bridges to main part of the island it gets pretty sketchy. I was there in December and went on a run or two during the day. Ran across the bridge and thought I was going to get mugged/raped.

Catch 22 - if I didn't have my college loans from going to Xavier, I could afford to go see them play.

Can anybody HBO (help a brutha out) here?

They've asked for a waiver for the next three seasons from the one-team-per-conference rule. Atlantis is definitely a go but I do not think they know for sure on the next two years.
