Ok, lots of bad movies on the other thread, how about movies you really liked that were never huge box office hits (indie, foreign, etc.) for whatever reason? I have a bunch, at work right now so will post more later but a few I really enjoyed:
The Station Agent
LA Confidential
Garden State
Laurel Canyon
Things we Lost in the Fire
A Better Life
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
The foreign Dragon Tattoo trilogy

Hard to say since a lot of movies I truly enjoy register well with critics but not necessarily audience/box office.
The most recent one that comes to mind is The Cabin in the Woods. Way too smart for its own good and the audience it was marketed to, true genre fans loved it but teens just looking to see a slasher flick didn't get it.
I recently saw Spring Breakers, I think its critically underrated and the second half of the film makes it one of the best ones of the year. Franco should be nominated for Best Actor, but doubtful that he will be.

Nobody's Fool with Newman, Willis, Melanie Griffith and Jessica Tandy. Life in small town America trying to scratch out a living. I'm embarrassed to say, I almost have it memorized I've seen it so many times. Some great lines in this movie plus good boobs, so should get some votes here.

The Professional. Gary Oldman is f'ed in the head in that film.
Urban Cowboy. Probably more of a guilty pleasure film than underrated as it is terrible but I still love it and there was no thread for bad movies you love anyway.

Is Midnight Run considered underrated?
Others I would include:
Inside Moves
Dead Solid Perfect
Hopscotch
Local Hero
To Live and Die in LA
The King of Comedy
Tapeheads
Nothing in Common
Top Secret (I miss funny Val Kilmer)
Damn, I just realized all my movies are form the 80's. I need to get out more.

I'm no movie expert. None of the people I know that are movie junkies have seen "With Honors". Recently I watched it again and one or two tear drps came out. So in my book, thats a good movie.

With Honors is an excellent movie! Top Secret mentioned above is another really fantastic movie. The hubby and I just watched that at Netflix not too long ago. It's still as funny as ever. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang with Kilmer and Downey Jr. is great as well. If you want to see funny Val Kilmer, I'd recommend it.

Weird Science.
I never got to see that whole movie. I was a kid when my parents rented it. We started watching on family movie night and got as far as the point when they were debating how large to make her fun bags when my parents turned it off. Such a disappointment.

Underrated/overrated is kind of a useless measure. I don't know anyone who doesn't think LA Confidential is incredible, for example.
But as far as recent movies that weren't huge box office hits but are pretty great, I'd mention In the Loop and the Assassination of Jesse James etc.
Bally, who the hell says Mr. Baseball and King Ralph aren't great movies? Ninety percent of what I know about the cultures of England and Japan is based on those movies.
