View Full Version : Best Juco Transfer?

Which of the following is the best Juco Transfer of the group?
Anthony Myles (2002-2004): Anthony averaged 10.4 points per game while grabbing 6.9 rebounds. Myles was a key cog in the team that made "The Run". Many of us are still wondering why Thad Matta left him in against Duke to pick up those quick fouls.
Torraye Braggs (1996-1998): During his two seasons at Xavier, he average 13.4 points per game while grabbing 7.8 rebounds. He ended his X career with 792 points. Xavier made the tournament twice during his tenure.
Jeff Massey(1993-1995): Jeff scored 509 points in his Senior Season and led the Musketeers to a NCAA Birth. He led the team in scoring, steals, blocks and FT%(Larry Sykes, T.J. Johnson, Michael Hawkins, and Pete Sears).

I loved Braggs (dude was legitimately crazy), but Jeff Massey was a total stud. Did I hear that he had some heart issues that limited his pro basketball career? If that's right, it's too bad.
Myles was a good player as well, but outside of his amazing performance against Duke before fouling out I don't think he was on Braggs' or Massey's level.

It's a coin flip between Braggs and Massey. But I went with Braggs because he was the on-the ball defender in the Prosser press. You don't see that very often from a center. I don't think the press was ever the same after Braggs left.

Yeah, anyone who thinks CJ was the toughest guy to ever play for X never saw Braggs in action.

I had a few classes with Braggs. He was...how should I say this...intense. I always wished he would have literally killed someone on the court, preferably Bobby Brannen.
Was Kevin Carr a JUCO? I always thought he would have been a great player if not for those knees.

Myles was dominating Shelden Williams in that game. If I remember correctly, he was named to the tournament's all region team.

When healthy, Carr was pretty good. He just wasn't healthy very often.

None of the above. I vote for Derek Strong.

See I thought about him as well, but couldn't remember if he was a JUCO. I know he came from California and was an older player for us. Derek Strong would be a good choice.

Was Strong a JUCO? He played 3 seasons at X. Was that 1st year at a JUCO or was he ineligible his freshman year?
If Strong was a JUCO then thats who I would vote for. If not I would go with Braggs, even though Myles was a beast in March 2004.

Yep, because at the time recruiting JUCOs was considered a bad thing, they kept that on the down-low.
Strong was awesome, and was a huge cog on the '89-'90 team that really elevated the program. I think they should at least add "STRONG" in 12-point font to the #33 Jersey hanging in Cintas (absolutely no disrespect to Grant intended).

I don't think Carr was a JUCO either? (I could be very wrong about that).

Strong was not a JUCO. He was a Prop 48 who couldn't play his freshman year. (James Posey was also a Prop 48).
I can't believe Obi Harris wasn't one of the choices.

Or Khalil Nixon, or Desmond Walker, or Marcus Mason. Prosser really wasted scholarships on bad JUCO players. Didn't Marcus Mason play about 4 minutes on senior night and fouled out?

He left the team about mid-season.
When he committed, his JUCO coach made some comment that he wasn't good enough to play for Xavier. Apparently he was correct in that assessment.

I stand corrected. Prop 48 and JUCO were both frowned upon (and both a way of living for UC in those days!) hence my mix-up.
I'll vote for him as the best Prop 48 player, then. A nose above James Posey.

I voted for Braggs, but Massey was a beast, he averaged 18.9 PPG his senior year. One of the most underrated Muskies ever.

Maybe the next poll should be the "best ineligible freshman year"

Apparently. I had totally forgotten about him -- when I heard the name I was picturing an end-of-the-bench guy. I'm glad I got educated!

The Hawkins-Massey backcourt was great that year. Would be remembered even more fondly if Sears and Rose didn't screw up and get suspended for the G'Town tourney game that X would've won at full strength.

Jeff Massey by a nose. Loved Braggs and I thought he might hang on in the NBA for a bit. Massey could sure shoot the rock. Braggs was a badass.

That team was so built for a tournament run. Even without Rose and Sears, X gave an Iverson led Hoyas a run for their money.

I can't imagine the destruction Braggs would have dished out had he been on last seasons team when the brawl happened with UC.

Braggs was a beast, no doubt. Probably Xavier's first real muscle man. But, no one can deny what Anthony Myles did to get Xavier to the final five.

Kinda....he played about 20 minutes spread over 5 games one season. So he has played 20 minutes more for Xavier than you or I put together.

No! Xavier's first real muscle man was Bob Pelkington. He was listed at 6'7" and about 240 lbs and averaged 16.6 rebounds per game and 13.4 points per game over the course of his Muskie career while averaging 46.4% from the field. Only Tyrone Hill (1,380 over a 4-year span) pulled down more rebounds that Bob Pelkington (1,325 over a 3-year span).
Nobody f'ed with the Pelk!

I think I'd be scared of the pace of those games. I suspect it was teams running down the floor and putting up bad shots?

You would have loved those games. All American Steve Thomas was putting up good shots and setting the all time Xavier scoring average.
