View Full Version : IU oversigned for next year again

Here’s the current situation with IU’s roster:
The Hoosiers lose three players from the past season --- Derek Elston, Jordan Hulls and Christian Watford.
Ten scholarship players remain: Remy Abell, Maurice Creek, Austin Etherington, Yogi Ferrell, Jeremy Hollowell, Peter Jurkin, Hanner Mosquera-Perea, Victor Oladipo, Will Sheehey and Cody Zeller.
In November, IU signed a six-player recruiting class -- Devin Davis, Collin Hartman, Luke Fischer, Stanford Robinson, Troy Williams and Noah Vonleh.

Two more will probably be in the NBA next year (Zeller, Oladipo).

I could see Maurice Creek "pursue a graduate program" at another school next year. His knees are made of the same material as Grant Hill's ankles and is probably by-passed by younger players at this point.

That would still make them one over. Austin Etherington may be the casualty.

Yeah, I wasn't sure where that last one would come from. Although they might just "Ron Patterson" someone.

I don't see Zeller leaving early. The family seems to value education.

Any projected lottery pick who doesn't enter the draft is an idiot. Well, at least not if that person actually wants to play NBA basketball for a living.

Not to mention no matter how you look at it the longer a player stays in college the less the NBA values them. More tape to show your weaknesses, if you dont make big jumps from yr to yr its a down, less potential can be assumed. There is a reason college seniors are not high draft picks.

If you're ready for the NBA your game will develop more by being in the NBA.

Yeah, I decided to go Pro right out of high school in stead of going to college.....academically speaking of course.

I read somewhere that zeller's parents said he could go pro once he graduates. The same article said he was on pace to graduate in August.

And if i am lying about you owing me alcohol, forgive me. I saw an opportunity for free booze and went for it.

I'm not certain how the law works in a place like Indiana, but in the rest of the country the parents don't really have any say in that matter.

I see how you didn't indicate that you would buy beers for others, just "beers". Very clever.

Zeller is not ready, anyone who say his lack of ability to finish at 3 feet against Syracuse should know that. He has bust written all over him right now.
Edit: that said, If he does go pro IU will lose 4 and if Olidapo goes that is 5. I see nobody else on that roster that has a remote shot so someone will transfer.

But he will be a RICH bust. He's a lottery pick, he would be crazy to stay in school, unless he plans to go home after graduation and work in the local feed mill. His 2 brothers are nothing special.

Well, that presents a challenge. Will I need to get a bike to collect my free drink?
BTW, you might want to think about changing the location under your avatar to "on a bike." Just saying.

Neither brother was as talented or had as much potential at this time as Cody. He may not leave this year but no way he stays two more unless he stays and doesnt show any progress.

Rivals said that X offered him in high school. Anyone know if this is someone they would get involved with again?

I would imagine so. My brothers an IU alum he says his game is similar to Lyons with the slashing athleticism of Dez. Says he is a decent three-point shooter probably in the mid 30s and he was probably IU second-best perimeter defender.

I don't see any reason why he would be able to play right away. He just finished his sophomore year.

I don't know the circumstances at all. If he was 'forced' to leave...whatever that means. I'm thinking of a Dez like situation. Obviously that particular would exclude him from ever stepping onto campus. Certainly there are other circumstances that would make a player eligible besides the grad school rule. Yes?

The only other basis would be a "hardship waiver".

This sounds more like a Brian Walsh or Jay Canty situation to me but obviously I don't have any other info other than what has been written.

You typically don't get a hardship waiver for being over recruited.

One would think you wouldn't get a hardship waiver after being expelled from a school yet Dez did. Big schools can get what they want.

Sources tell http://Peegs.com Remy Abell's decision to transfer from Indiana will stand.
Looks like IU will have 13 on scholarship (I believe). I am not a huge Crean fan, but it doesn't sound like this was a case of pushing Abell out, more being recruited over and wanting more playing time in the future.
Not sure how many feel, I think Abell could be a solid transfer to X, but he is probably a Plan B in my mind.

The real question is where do you think next year's team will lack depth.
Christon/D.Davis/M.Davis/B.Randolph at the guard spots.
Martin/Cantino/Richards at the SF.
Phillmore/Farr/Reynolds at the PF.
Stainbrook at C.
I think this team could use a viable SF who can play minutes and push Martin in practice and maybe a 4/5. I think Christon/Dee/freshmen have our guard spots covered.

SF because Martin remains a wild card, Kamall is a freshman, and Cantino is one year JUCO guy.
Hypothetically, Abell could fill in at the 3 being 6'3'' - 6'4''. Not ideal height at the 3, but definitely not terrible.

"Take a seat Maurice. Maurice, we've decided that it would be best for you if we didn't renew your scholarship. You bring a lot to the table, but a lot of what you bring we simply cannot use and it would not be fair to force you to stay here by having you sign your scholarship for the year. Of course, if you do want to stay, we could explore the possibilities of letting you walk on, but I really don't think that's what is best, so I can understand if that's not what you want. You will be given your release, so long as it's not to a conference team or to a team we know we will be facing out of conference."
See, it's all about the players. Coaches just want what is best for the players. Amazingly, the player decided he wanted to transfer.

The same thing I believe has happened at all most every major college basketball program, including Xavier. Dont you think?

Of course it has, and it's not just the "major" programs either. That's why the transfer rate is so high. The coaches initiate the majority of it. Not making players sit out a year and giving them a full release would actually cause the transfer rate to go down because coaches would be much less likely to force them out the door if they knew they could go wherever they wanted and play right away.
