Big East recommending two or none rule for high school players among other things.
Below that article is one about Duke adopting zone defense being the turn around for this season. The reasoning sounds a lot like the issues Xavier has had.
I know some are saying the zone contributed to the loss. Maybe the zone isn't the problem but how good you are at it. Maybe they should have used it more in league play and gotten better at it.
Just a thought.

I can appreciate the Big East's suggestions. It sounds like a compromise between what is here now and what baseball does with young prospects.
While I don't think it will really go anywhere, I like the idea of the NCAA + USA Basketball trying to take control over the AAU and non-school-related basketball programs. It may sound like taking on too much, but if there is an overall system of compliance and expectations, kids just might be getting better training and information to prepare them for college or other avenues.

I'm surprised that zones didn't see more action this year, given Tre and JP's um...talents...as on-ball defenders.

For a kid who supposedly doesn't play defense too well, JP Macura seemed to have a boatload of steals (49 to lead the team by 17 more than the nearest Muskie "thief") and blocked shots (3rd on the team behind only Sean O'Mara and Tyrique Jones).

Sure and none of that really speaks to his ability to stay in front of his man.

Id like to see a stat about how many fouls he had going for steals too.

Even when Xavier switched to the 1-3-1 zone, it was JP whom the coaches put out on the point where he routinely caused a lot of havoc for the ball-control guard of the opposing team. Is JP as quick-reacting as Paul Scruggs in the man-D? Probably not if measured by the number of times the staff see-sawed him back and forth (defense/offense) with Scruggs during key portions of a close game. But the fact remains that only points to the advancements made by Freshman Scruggs as the season wore on rather than any grave inabilities on JP's part, especially when we realize that practice was used primarily during the last third of the season when the D-1 high-major game had gotten a lot "slower" for the highly regarded Scruggs. I would have to guess that JP could play significant minutes for most highly regarded programs that routinely receive high seeds (i.e. those with lower numbers) to the NCAA Tourney.

Do statisticians actually categorize fouls based on the exact situation of the infraction? (I.e. Fouled to stop the clock; fouled to force free throws instead of an easy lay-up; fouled because of a failure to keep the opposing player in front of you; etc...)

If given the opportunity to have two more players who would fill stat sheets like Tre and JP did for their 4 years at Xavier, I'd have to guess that 95% of XU fans (and the coaching staff) would take them in a New York second!

Oh I would too. As long as I can stick Remy Abell or Malcolm Bernard next to them so there's at least one guard who can be an on-ball defender.

Radio silence so far. Of course the fan base position is they should take the Josh Hart approach and do 1 more year to ensure they get to the first round for guaranteed money. They both have flaws in their games (Spellman has huge upside though) and they could continue to work on them. Spellman improved his lateral quickness and closing out ability but can still be a little on the slow end. He also needs a little more work on taking it to the hoop. Donte----decision making. Physically and core talent wise he is so strong, but as a fan, sometimes you just go "wtf?" lol. Other times, like the NC game, you are just in awe. Most boards show them in the 30+ range in terms of where they would go.
My gut says they both test the water, don't hire an agent and come back, but I wouldn't be surprised if 1 or both declare. Wait and see time.
Obviously, if they stay... and now that Booth is confirmed coming back, I think we have a shot at another deep run. Clearly Brunson is tough to replace, but between Booth, Donte, Gillespie and Quinerly coming in, the back court will be very strong. Paschall (who will be a focal point next year) and Spellman front line will be very tough.. then with Cosby-Roundtree, Samuels, Painter... in addition to Swider and Slater coming in, there will be a tremendous amount of depth. Gotta believe somebody red shirts.

Ugh damn you guys. Hahaha. Booth is tough, I definitely think DiVincenzo will test the waters as his stock has to be hot after that National Championship performance, I could have sworn I saw Spellman creeping in towards the end of the first round, but I might have been mistaken. Obviously for us, we'd like to see both of them leave, but Nova is going to be scary regardless. That's a helluva reload coming in.
Also awesome for Ashley Howard, hopefully he does some good things at LaSalle, I know a lot of this board wanted to at least interview him, not surprised he has a head coaching gig being Jay Wright's top guy, I'm sure he's learned a ton from that position.

NBA Draft Net has Divencenzo at 20 to the Bulls and Spellman at 25 to the Lakers
Other Big East players
Mikal Bridges at 10 to Philadelphia
Khryi Thomas at 14 to Clippers
Jalen Brunson at 28 to Golden State
Kelan Martin at 55 to Charlotte

If they were invited and declined that is huge mistake. They have no chance of getting drafted without impressing there. The new rule of thumb is if you don't get invited to Portsmouth than the NBA isn't even considering you. Now I know they can go to tryouts, but that is a very long shot.

How many seniors that have been drafted over the last five years weren't invited to play at Portsmouth? Maybe I should have said unwritten rule, but my premise is correct. If they weren't invited, and I am assuming they weren't if they aren't playing, they have no chance of getting drafted.

Looking at the players hard to believe they were not invited. I get more confused all the time on the draft and what teams want. When people tell me Collin Sexton is a better prospect than Brunson we can't be talking about the same sport. I don't know if any of these players could make an NBA team which is all the more amazing given our success. We never had a person with the one on one skill to take over end of game like Kyron Cartwright(who is also not on the roster). That one on one player insures no turnovers, a decent shot, floor balance and the chance of an offensive rebound.

Not really hard to figure out...NBA teams want athleticism and height...if you don't have one or both of those, you better be an absolute stud of a shooter who can get your own shot off.
Sexton is ridiculously athletic and can get to the rim...Brunson cant, at least not at the NBA level.

Looking at the youtubes I see a 10/6 20 min type player who may be able to play with Tyriique in situations. Maybe like a better Toby Hegner or Nate Fowler. We only have him for one year. I also like what I see of Castin especially against Villanova, Kentucky , Kansas State. I am cautiously optimistic but have been a little depressed since FSU. .These last 2 nights watched a little NBA with meaningless games and it was ugly and unwatchable. Remember the team coming back was our defensive team and I will be damned to know why they did not score for 9 min in qtr 2 vs FSU.

They can't have it. All of the other conferences want MSG, but none of them really want to commit to it the way the Big East does. And it generally doesn't make sense geographically for the Big Ten or ACC to permanently move to MSG. So long as that is the case, and as long as the Big East fans continues to support the Tournament, I think we're safe. On that front (beating a dead horse), UConn would be a very valuable asset to the league. Villanova won't be good forever.

Creighton just went from top 2 or 3 to mid-pack. No height. X should be top 2 imho.

Good grief, the Big East is going to be Beast next year - at least according to Andy Katz. 3 BE schools in the top 15 (X at #15), 5 in top 25, and 7 in the top 36. Hopefully the league will live up to these expectations come tourney time.

To be fair, Cal has been through the 1 and done cycle, and has done this numerous times, to get a little more benefit of the doubt than Penny. Not saying that as a diss to Memphis, because they do have a solid roster. Also depends if that was posted before Tucker decided to stay in the draft or not, because Tucker would have been a Senior presence to help guide all the new guys throughout the challenge of adjusting to college ball, they have one senior, and basically a team made up of sophomores and freshman. The talent is no doubt there, and I do think they'll be a top team, but may have some growing pains.

Bryan Antoine, 5* Guard / wing is out 4-6 months to recover from shoulder surgery for Nova. Too bad for the kid. Apparently played with the torn labrum his senior year and they waited until he was on campus to do the surgery. Super talented kid, but skinny as a rail and could have used this summer for the weight training. By BE time have to believe he will be in the rotation, most thought he was a sure fire starter and possible OAD.

Unfortunate for the guy, saw some highlights and he definitely looks like the real deal. 4-6 months is a long time, he'll be getting back around the start of the season/middle of non-conference play, definitely interested into seeing how Jay Wright handles this team, I'll tell you what though, I am not going to be sad seeing Phil Booth moving on.

You are spot on... again, very young team with no seniors. Antoine and the other frosh need a lot of time and reps to pick up the system (defense, defense, defense). Imo, that is what doomed Quinerly. Could not /would not play the D required.
Yeah, will miss Booth... just a great college player. He had an incredible record at nova and he really was liked.
To me, we are weak at the point. Gillespie is our guy, like it or not.... many don't! Key development will be if Justin Moore can step up. You guys have an advantage there i believe.
Nice to see so many BE teams so strong this year. Seton Hall, you guys, prov, marq, georgetown are all going to be really good. Going to be a good year for the BE.

Anyone who makes fun of the "Jersey Shore" doesn't understand or has never been to Stone Harbor and Avalon.
Good for you.
Went there for years during my time in PIttsburgh.
Was always jealous of the Philly people, as I had to trek across the damn PA Turnpike to get there, while they could hop across the bridge and be down there within 90 minutes or so, traffic depending.

Wait a minute dash... So like me, you also get how most people have no clue about the hidden NJ gems called Avalon and Stone Harbor (which is just fine with me). Also, like me, you vacationed there for years, while living in Pittsburgh.. which meant having to experience that dreadful PA Turnpike drive to get there. Are you sure you aren’t me?
Too funny that we have shared so many of the same experiences and still carry so many of the same feelings about those experiences.
After completing grad school down south, I moved to NYC and once again began vacationing in Avalon/Stone Harbor. I stopped going for a few years but now live in NJ (just outside NYC) and am thrilled to say I will be heading down there again this summer. Much- much shorter and more pleasant drive than the PA Turnpike which my sibling (who will meet me down there) is going to have to endure.

Absolutely good for her! I am sure you're very proud of her. A lot of travel, but the job content side of it must be very challenging and fascinating for her.
I was long gone before the "merger" took place. Mellon had always fancied itself a money center bank, so when the Bank of New York deal happened, that pretty much sealed that notion.
You guys would be interested in one deal, in particular, I was involved in while at Mellon. There was this little Cincinnati company that wanted to build a new headquarters and processing facility in Mason, Ohio in the late 80s. They decided they wanted to go in the direction of a private placement as opposed to pursuing senior bank debt financing. I brought my capital markets team in and we were successful in engaging as their agent for a $20 million senior secured private placement notes issue with an insurance company.
Once completed and funded, Cintas Corporation built their new home!

I grew up in Portsmouth, OH. My Dad was a big Browns fan - - this is prior to Paul Brown heading down I-71 to create the Bengals. So, at first, it was about Cleveland Municipal Stadium, Howard Cossel, Jim Brown, et al. When the Bengals came around, we followed both the Browns and the Bengals.
So, when I first moved to Pittsburgh, I was quiet about it all, though the passion for the Steelers amazed me and was impressive. As I went along, I got to witness how impressive the Rooney family was - is - and came to respect the Steelers. My first wife's family were huge Steelers fans. My former father-in-law was a member at Oakmont, so I had to basically put up with it if I wanted to get a round of golf in out there. Having noted that, I can honestly tell you that I actively cheer for the Bengals, Steelers and Browns. When they play each other it's been easy: the Browns are finally waking up after three centuries of ineptitude, the Bengals will find a way to be inept when they're good, and the Steelers know how to win. Finally, now that I live in Jacksonville and am married to my Texas-centric wife who loves the Cowboys, I can't EVER look like I'm cheering for the Steelers. Some real hatred there.
Pittsburgh has become an even more fascinating city. It's rebirth, coming out of the days of the destruction of the steel mills has been extraordinary.
I hate to say it, but Pittsburgh's skyline is more impressive than Cincinnati's skyline - and I am a Cincinnati homer all the way. The three rivers make the 'burgh interesting. The view from Mt. Washington is striking.
I try to describe coming out of the Fort Pitt Tunnels to people and they just can't get it until they do it themselves. What a view and ride!
USC school district is top shelf. My son went on to Alfred in New York and the Rhode Island School of Design and now is an educational lobbyist and strategist living outside of Boston. And my daughter went on to William and Mary, then Pitt Med School and now is an orthopedic surgeon, finishing up a six year residency program at PENN in Philly. Those property taxes were brutal, but worth it.

Thanks for sharing.
It must have been pretty special to be a Browns fan during the Jim Brown era, watching him do his thing. I had the fortune of being a kid in Pittsburgh when they were dubbed “City of Champions.” I experienced a glorious decade that included the Steelers winning 4 Super Bowl and the Pirates winning a World Series. During that time, my father also had season tickets for Pitt football. Pitt was pretty darn good back then. They won a National Championship with Tony Dorsett and came close to doing it again several more times with players like Dan Marino and Hugh Green.
I completely get how your wife, a cowboys fan, might not be crazy about you cheering for the Steelers. You can always reminder her that her team got the best of the Steelers the last time the they met in a Super Bowl (thanks in part to Neil O'Donnell).
USC does have an amazing reputation. I am not at all surprised that your kids have gone on to do so well. No question you had a major influence on them too. You must be proud. My sister went to Law School at Pitt and her kids all go to or have graduated from Quaker Valley, another tremendous school in Pittsburgh.
The Rooney’s have done so much to bring pride and passion to the people of Western Pennsylvania and to Steeler Nation everywhere. As you seem well aware, they have always run that organization with class. Art ll May not have quite the charisma or gravitas as his father (Dan) or his grandfather (Art Sr.), but then it would be next to impossible for him to be able to measure up to those larger than life figures in the eyes of Steeler fans. Art Sr. And Dan were true pioneers and so instrumental in shaping the NFL.
The rivers that frame the city, the mountain that overlooks it, the bridges that connect to it, and the tunnels that lead to it really do add to the charm of the city. The views from Mount Washington and from Fort Pitt Bridge (as you exit the tunnel), really do need to be experienced in person to truly be appreciated. You’ve nailed it.
I really loved my 4 years in Cincinnati, while attending Xavier. In many ways it did feel a bit like Pittsburgh. Similar size. Similar friendly people. The Clifton area even reminded me a bit of Oakland. Clifton has UC and a section with night clubs and places to eat similar to that stretch of Forbes Ave where the University of Pittsburgh is located. I do miss Cincinnati and the Xavier campus (and going to Xavier games there). The last X game I went to in Cincinnati was the “Zip ‘em up” game against UC. I was fortunate to have a buddy give me give me one of his tickets a few row behind the UC bench. So close to all of action on the floor, including the fight.
Now I am going to sound like a homer when I agree with you that the views of Pittsburgh may be a tad more pleasing to the eyes than those of Cincinnati. I must then also admit that sounds of Pittsburgh are likely not as pleasing to the ears of most people, n’at.

Not sure about Mt. Washengtun or the Tin Angel, but Primanti's does suck. If you're going to put fries on a mystery meat sandwich, at least serve the fries hot. Cold Fries served in any way are terrible, but why ruin the sandwich with them.

I think the scary thing for me was realizing 1997 was 22 years ago, Jesus.

So happy to be in the Big East and not have to deal with this crap anymore. Vd has 700 posts on how shitty their schedule is:

How a program operates and how a program actually performs certainly can differ, especially when it comes to VD.
Here’s a money quote from that article: “The class divide in college basketball was established decades ago, but 20-game league schedules figure to splinter the sport harsher than ever before. The selection committee is the only entity that can -- and should -- make up for that gap.
We earned our way into the club. VD is going to rot in mid-major hell. And that is as it should be.

Where the cryers ranked? I seem to recall that "they had passed us as a program" back when we were in the same league.
One of the all-time great posts from a delusional Flyer fan, and I think the responses from other Flyer fans were comments like, "Absolutely" and "No doubt".

Charts and graphs, gentlemen. Charts and graphs. And a VD education.

I'm not a Dayton fan but it does seem quite childish to twist UD into an inappropriate form.

It's logo humor.

Roadlife, Dayton caught holy hell when they initially rolled that logo out. Many of their own fans were not happy with it. It has been a source of ridicule ever since.
Did you seriously simply not make the connection?

Is it safe to say that you now see the humor in it? That's a pretty clear "V" right there, and it couldn't be more appropriate or funny.

Growing up a Hoosier, I never thought I'd see the day that legalized gambling would come to Indiana. Makes the Butler trip more interesting as you can now hit the strip clubs AND put a bet down on X.

Ryan Kalkbrenner committed to...……………...Creighton. Huge get for the Jays.

They deserve any and all the grief they get for THAT! I mean, how does that happen?
