View Full Version : Flyer Fans
I know I'll probably get blasted for this, but I feel sorry for some Flyer fans today. One of my best friends from high school went to UD. He's a nice guy, we have even gone to X UD games together. Both in Cincy and in Dayton. When the games over we are still friends. Sure we rub it in a little with each other, depending on who one. I feel for him today. Not all UD fans are aholes. And for those people I feel sorry. For most of those grey haired old farts...See Ya.

So the big question: How strongly should X work to block UD's membership in the Big East?
I have conflicting emotions on this. It would hurt UD more than it would benefit X to be excluded from the Big East. But it would help us! It would help us not only with BBALL recruiting over UD, but much more importantly, attracting students. The exposure and prestige of the Big East would give X an advantage over UD.
But it would be a cruel move...

Doubtful Xavier will have any say in the matter. Fox will have significant input into the selection as it is the rain maker. TV markets are paramount to cable networks-obviously- thus St. Louis, I believe, is a given. After that, I see an open field for the last spot in the league. Probably will know by this time next year. Could even be a shock; who knows.
My problem with UD is what they did to us when they left for the Great Midwest. They just took off, there was no regret on their part. And we were left in the MCC. Come to think of it, so did Marquette and SLU. College sports is really cutthroat.

No doubt. I'm not sure how much influence we will have. I really do believe that blocks have occurred in the past. For example, Villanova wanted no part of Temple in the Big East until it became certain that the bball schools would be bolting. Of course, Richmond could not prevent VCU from entering the A10. I'm not sure where we stand on that spectrum.

One dayton fan can be okay by himself, although it isn't the norm. Put dayton fans together and they immediately turn into the world's biggest bunch of whining @*&holes.
I do not feel sorry for them. I do pity them because they, and their meager excuse for a basketball program, are pitiful. Who didn't see the writing on the wall when it came to realignment? It appears only dayton was behind in realizing what was perfectly obvious to everyone else. Good riddance!
The only thing I felt was missing from this glorious day of pride for Xavier athletics was a sympathetic reflection session on behalf of our dear friends to to the north. What a bittersweet occasion. If only the flyers could've been good enough on the court over the past 30 years to be included in all the fun...
But you know what, I'm not going to let one tragedy ruin my day.
If 11 and 12 aren't announced before July 1st and we have a vote in the new members, I would be REALLY surprised if Xavier voted to include Dayton. I personally think if this goes past July 1st, Dayton's chances of inclusion drop dramatically.

True. It would have been amazing if Sr. Rose had said "And let us pray for those less fortunate than us, specifically those people who attend a particular university in dayton so desperate to be Xavier that it had to hire Xavier's former coach's baby brother. Despite their pitiful attempts to be Xavier, they will never be Xavier, and now they know it. Please help them, Lord, to accept their place in mediocrity."

I don't think we would vote for them. We won't outwardly "block" them but we don't need to. Everyone know our opinion on the matter. They either care about that or they don't.

UD is worth including if it adds SLU. Every opposing fanbase is annoying and irrational and I don't see the benefits of spite here. Xavier benefits the most from having UD in the conference: lower travel costs and more media attention due to the history between the two school.
Since Juwan Staten there's been almost no recruiting competition between the two schools. By itself I don't know that Dayton would get invited, but I think the Dayton-SLU combo is very appealing for the Big East.

TV rules. If the Dayton market is perceived to be valuable, they'll be in.
I went to the First Four last night, and we sat in front of some raging drunk Dayton fans that were hilarious. Of course, it had a lot to do with the fact that their stupid team wasn't there. It wasn't a packed house, but it out drew every one of our home games. You have to at least acknowledge that Dayton supports college basketball. We could do a lot worse with a conference mate.
Also, the St. Mary's "cheerleaders" are strippers without poles.

From Adam Zagoria's Zag's Blog:
**The league expects to expand, possibly to 12 teams going forward. Both Dayton and St. Louis have been reported as potential additions. “I think we’ll eventually get to 12, pretty much I know we’ll get to 12,” Father Shanley said. “But whether or not it’s next year add two, next year we add one, we keep a slot open. We go two years. It depends on a lot of other things, so I think we’ll reevaluate in the middle of next year and see if we want to do it for the following year or not.”

Sounds to me like they are taking a wait-and-see approach to see how the rest of conference realignment pans out. I wonder if they are looking in the direction of the ACC in particular, to see whether any of those "sorta football" schools get left in the cold.

It seems Dayton fans are under the impression that the Big East doesn't understand the travel implications of adding Creighton and Fox will regret signing the conference to a 12 year deal. There is no way rivalries can develop, ratings will be low, and most likely Fox will demand adding an additional four teams for content.
They then jump to the obvious logical conclusion that the newly revamped A10 might be a better option for networks and could result in a better television package. I'm dead serious, there are fans who think this. MH would find comfort with these Mensa candidates.

The Dayton fan base has become an absolute joke.
The A10 board, which use to be a good time with a lot of good natured ribbing back and forth, has degenerated into a little children's playground.
Muddy and his friends went crying to the moderators, and now even a simple post about team comparisons gets wiped out by the moderators.
It has seriously gone back to grade school, and other moderators have followed along.
God knows what would happen if Snipe ever came back and fired them up. They might all need counseling.
In combination with them having their own closed message board (the only one I know if in college basketball) they have set the gold standard for a pouty, little baby fan base. Even UC guys will stand there and slug it out. Dayton fans run off and hide behind a moderator's skirt because their precious little feelings might get hurt.
