Ok, you are right, DC. God it must be awesome to always be the smartest one in the room.

What the hell are you bitching about? I was merely pointing out my arguments.

I am a little amused at firing a guy for underperforming expectations for the amount you're paying him....just so you can keep paying him the same amount to do nothing for you.

Well, that's true too. Is it Tubb'y fault that that Minnesota "overpaid" him? Just like is it A-rod's fault that he got a ridiculous contract and hasn't posted MVP numbers ever year? Some of the blame lies in the folks that offered the contract.

The guy who offered Tubby the contract was not the same guy who fired him.

However, I do think it's hilarious that the new AD at Minnesota gets Billy Donovan to do his job.

The LA Times is reporting that Enfield has hired SD State asst Tony Bland to his staff at USC, with the prospect of making up to $300k/yr. If that is true, that is a huge salary for a relatively young assistant coach.

All the basketball guys on Twitter are saying what a huge hire that is for Enfield.

Bland must have some recruits that he can bring with him. Sort of like when Huggins paid for Beasley by giving a huge contract to Dalonte Hill.

Times are strange when Hurley turns down a B1G gig at Rutgers to stay at URI.

I think they'll have to offer a little more than this:

The 40-year old New Jersey native mulled over the offer for two days before declining what was a $1 million-a-year salary, but only a five-year contract

It's a Big Ten job, I suppose, but it's still Rutgers. It's like calling Northwestern or Penn State Big Ten jobs. Strictly speaking it's true, but everyone knows better. I think Penn State's last coach left voluntarily to take the Navy job (or something else in the Patriot League).

That's the head scratcher.

And if he thought he was in for a bigger gig, why balk at the five years?

I would think five years, in effect one recruiting class, wouldn't be enough to turn around a terrible program that somehow managed to make their situation much, much worse.

What's the normal terms of a contract? Is it five years? I would think Rutgers, seeing their own unique situation, would up the ante on that one.

You can win at URI. Better to win there and wait around for a good job than go to Rutgers and kill your career.

From a source: Rutgers offered Dan Hurley less guaranteed than he's making at Rhode Island. If true, not a positive sign for the hire.

This might have something to do with it. Why take less money and inherit that mess when you can just wait another year. Rhode Island should be improved next year as well.

Rhode Island wasn't exactly torching the nets this year. Now, to be fair, Hurley just moved to Rhode Island, so really hasn't had time to instill his system and type of players.

But - if ESPN is correct that Rutgets offered him a million dollar plus salary - and now you say that Rhody is paying him better, that means Rhody is paying over the 1 million mark? Let the Coach Mack salary debate begin anew given that information. Or is the key word there "guaranteed", which means to get the full 1 million payout from Rutgers he would need to take the B1G title, tournament, and have a deep run in the NCAA's, oh and get CoY and post a high academic rate.

I'd also agree that after losing a coach and an AD (and some of the team?) over this mess, Rutgers might have to back up the Brinks truck to get anybody halfway decent to step into that situation. Rutgers basketball doesn't strike me as a 'back up the Brinks truck" type program.

What's said in public is often not the real reason. I suspect he might have ended up with a prohibitive buyout that would keep him from taking a job at a school one tier higher.

Eddie Jordan will likely end up at Rutgers. He's never coached in college, so I don't know much about him.

It's also the same guy that gave him a fat extension less than a year ago.

So, Tubby Smith gets to Minnesota, turns them from a bad team into a tournament caliber team in the good years and an NIT team in the bad years. This is deemed worthy of a fat extension. After being given an extension, he makes the NCAA, wins for the first time in the NCAA Tournament since 1997......and then gets fired. (and I'm pretty sure they had to vacate those 1997 wins, so it was the first time they'd won without cheating since 1994).

His replacement???

Richard Pitino. A guy with one year's head coaching experience who finished fifth in the Sun Belt.

I find this situation to be incredibly poorly managed. Like everyone else, I think they thought they could get Shaka Smart. There is a big difference between thinking and knowing. Thinking you have to fart, and then suddenly knowing you had to shit is not a good thing. That appears to be what happened at Minnesota. In a nutshell, they spent a ton of money to get rid of a guy they'd just given a raise to after he had their best legit finish in twenty years, and then replaced him with a guy who finished fifth in the Sun Belt. Nicely done.

Tubby got an extension because he was looking at other jobs, and Teague wasn't in a position to look for another coach. Or at least he wasn't in a position to call Billy Donovan and ask him who his next coach should be.

I've stated my position before and was accused of thinking I am the smartest man in the room. Really I don't care what Minnesota does with their coaching position. But I know paying him the amount they were paying him, having his name associated with every possible job, (AUBURN?) and still not having a winning conference record makes the decision to depart with him not all that crazy.

Who knows what will happen with Pitino. But at least the guy had a winning record in the conference.

Speaking of Tubby, his son GG took over Jimmy Patsos at Loyola.

Great hire I think. GG has been with the program for the past five or six years, so the upward trend should continue up in Baltimore.

My position is simply that Minnesota looks like all kinds of suck on an administrative level. I'm not really agreeing or disagreeing with you. I just think they sucked in all kinds of ways.....including feeling the need to rely on Billy Donovan.

Per ESPN, Eddie Jordan close to taking the Rutgers job. A perfect match. A god-awful NBA coach for a god-awful program that was unsure about firing a sub-500 coach that was beating the $h!t out of his players. Eddie will be there 5 years until he makes a fool of himself in public then the school will be pressured to can him.
