Fox Sports 1 will officially launch on Saturday, Aug. 17, in about 90 million homes, making it the biggest sports cable network launch in history. Network executives said FS1 will air close to 5,000 hours of live event, news and studio shows annually (about 55 percent of the network's overall schedule will be live programming)

It's currently in the 600s somewhere on DirecTV, so even if 80 million have it, basically knows where to find it. To be taken seriously, it needs to be in the 210-220 range on DirecTV and in a similarly relevant spot on other providers' lineups.

I've read that eventually Fox Soccer Channel will be rebranded Fox Sports 2 and will carry some of these offerings. Fox loses the English Premier League soon and after that there's not really much point to FSC.

I was thinking the same thing...how great that we have an option now. But then I remembered, actually Fox is late to the game. CBS has CBS Sports Channel and NBC has NBC Sports Channel. Fox does have a lot of Sports contracts already which should make this a better channel, but really, I think they have already done a better job of promoting and marketing the new channel.

CBS Sports Network is not even rated. NBC Sports Network is in 80 million homes and is better because of hockey and the fact that it was already on some systems as Outdoor Life Network then Versus.
Fox Sports 1 is way ahead of both of those because, as Speed Channel, it already has 90 million home subscribers and is already on most basic cable systems. There will also be a probable re-branding of Fuel TV to Fox Sports 2. Fuel is already in 43 million homes.

The nice thing about Fox is that with all their regional networks they already have a catalog of programming and they can take the cream of the crop for the new channel.
I'd love to see Patrick and Olbermann host the first studio show, just to piss off ESPN. I know it will never happen because Olbermann's an ass and pissed off Fox when he was let go (and I know I'm living in 1995) but I'd love to see it just one time.

Hey Fox Sports 1, what is your angle? ESPN's Zany Uncle? How about this, be what ESPN used to be. A solid sports channel. Don't over hype things that fit your (and your parent networks) agenda. While you at it, maybe try to show live games instead of live Nascar practice (ya, I'm still pissed about that one). ESPN with another planned round of layoffs. Why?
" — many believe the sports behemoth still is recovering from billion-dollar TV deals it inked with the NFL and NBA while subscriber numbers were dropping."
See, while we thought that the FS1 deal with the Big East sounded high, it was a bargain for the amount of content that they received. Basically fills an entire winter of nights with programming.

1. THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE THE BIG FOX BROADCAST NETWORK, FS1, FS2, THE BIG TEN NETWORK, FOX NEWS OR FOX BUSINESS.
I put this in all caps because many are going to miss this aspect of the deal.
Fox News and Fox Business won’t be owned by Disney at all and live event programming will almost entirely, save the Fox Regional Sports Networks, be untouched by this deal. In fact, these live programming networks are still highly profitable and throw off tremendous cash flow. Which means Fox will be able to invest substantial sums of money in even more live rights events going forward. The future business prospects of the remaining Fox assets are still very bright here.
Fox Sports, other than the regional sports networks, is untouched by this deal. (And this deal will have no impact on me because Outkick is 100% independent of Fox Sports. Yes, that includes my radio show, which is distributed by Premeire and owned by I heart radio).
The business left behind here in the existing Fox spinoff company will be the leader in live event programming in the country. Fox Sports will still have the Super Bowl, the NFC, the World Series, the World Cup, the U.S. Open in golf, the UFC, the top Big Ten games, the Pac 12, the Big 12 and countless other sports properties.
FS1 and FS2 programming will not change.

Don't have numbers from last week's Xavier Seton Hall game on Fox, but the Big East is doing a bit better than the last few years on Fox comparatively, but not as good by far as the big state schools. Still, it's cheap programming for Fox/FS 1.
The Xavier/ Providence game on Fox on January 6 drew 736K viewers. The January 13 Michigan-Michigan State drew 1.6 million viewers on FOX.
When I can find some other comparative ratings I'll post them, but the Big East, with all private schools, still has an uphill battle. Most other big conference games on ESPN draw around a million on Saturdays.
The Big East still has to have that one huge NCAA Tournament year where they get, say 3 to the Elite 8 and 2 to a Final 4. It still is always going to be a tough sled vs all the big state schools- even after a National Championship for. BE school.

Fox has to be ecstatic about the weekend .
First on the National Game on Saturday, they get a St. John's upset of Dook, and then today on the National game they get a very competitive (until the end) game with the Number 1 team in the US vs Seton Hall.
This League is more than doing their part and Fox has to be pleased.
