I agree 100%. As someone who is excitable and temperamental like Jalen, I can attest that all other emotions tend to run just as deeply in people like us, including empathy, compassion, love, etc. A person's character is not defined by his biggest shortcoming. Clearly Jalen has many virtuous qualities that should make the Xavier community proud.

Of course Jalen is a good person. I don't think anyone here is saying otherwise. However, he has a lot to learn when it comes to basketball iq and knowing the situation.
It seems obvious by the way he is treated on the court that he has a "reputation" - and I think most here would agree it is undeserved. The tangle under the basket earlier in the game when the SH player falls on his ass and Jalen carefully steps out of the tangle with his arms up...the on air reaction was quite startling. Although it was obvious Jalen was doing everything he could to avoid even the appearance of any extra-curricular, the broadcast, the reaction from the crowd/team was that there was some ill intent and trouble brewing.
When Jalen did get the F1, he was, firstly, going after a lose ball, which usually, and rightly so, should give players a little more leeway when applying some physicality. One issue with Jalen; he is, and looks so physically imposing, that even a 'nudge' moves a smaller/weaker player more dramatically than otherwise might be expected. There is a bit of a "woah, what just happened?" factor. That, coupled with his rep means that many physical plays, which he is naturally going to almost always dominate, is going to draw a reaction...unfortunately a negative one for those who don't know Jalen beyond surface perception...and some of them have whistles and some have microphones.
Why would he want to come back to a situation where he can not even play his game without being presumed guilty (particularly when he can go make some $$$$$ playing his game where maybe the rep won't follow, or, at least it won't be such a detriment)?

Because he didn't try in classes that didn't mean jack shit to him?
You know who is at fault for LSU's mess? Their shitty coach. They had two 5-star players in Simmons and Blakeney, and a 4-star player in Sampson. They were all from the 2015 class. They had another 4-star player in Robertson from the 2014 class and another 4-star player in Quarterman from the 2013 class. How the hell do you not make the tournament with that level of talent?

Maybe no team chemistry. It can be tough to keep all these 4/5 star players happy, esp. when the team is not winning. Yes, it's the job of the coach.

Oh, I get it. Shoot, I'm only half-joking when saying Simmons probably told LSU that he wouldn't play in the N(ot)I(nvited)Tournament to avoid injury before his imminent huge payday. He's shown how little LSU means to him--wouldn't that have been a sight!
In any event, yes, I think everyone is happy to close the door on this debacle (especially those with no interest in LSU who have been bombarded with LSU coverage this year as a result of Simmons).

I agree the ben Simmons thing is a little overblown, but anyone who follows college basketball knows who Ben Simmons is and a lot of people care. It is an interesting study and one that will be used by the dukes, kentuckys, and Kansas of the world in recruiting one and dones. The thing is there's so many examples of guys that you're like how the hell did you get into the NBA, or drafted on potential (i.e Kwame Brown), and I think NBA Scouts think that Farr has reached his ceiling with his transition rather than seeing him as a project that could improve and continue to impress.
No one in the NBA is very fond of rebounding...he might find a spot...there are lots of bugs in the NBA that are nearly worthless but manage to hang on. Stevens at Boston has a whole roster of hard worker unknowns.

Is this sarcastic? Like MOR said, Tristan Thompson is getting 24 million a year to rebound. Dennis Rodman, Charles Barkley, that's how those guys made their mark. There are plenty of throwaway bigs laying around on NBA rosters, it's definitely not out of the realm of possibility. James put up some pretty impressive numbers for only playing about half of every game. Personally, I think he'd be a good pick-up for a team.

Really? James has been playing down low for a year. He just decided to start doing it this year and absolutely tore it up. That makes me wonder how good he could have been had he been doing that from the start. I think James can still improve quite a bit, especially in regards to getting himself in shape.

My bad, 16.4, which is still way too high. He's getting his maximum deal and is one of the highest paid players in the league, which I personally think is ridiculous, but to say that no one in the NBA values rebounding is absurd. Like saying no one in the MLB values fielding.
I don't think James is on the fast track or anything, but to dismiss him as not having a shot is foolish as well. James has a definite shot/potential role in the NBA. The precedent is certainly there. He needs to get in better shape, stop whining throughout games and keep improving down low of course.

Well most of his value was driven up by Lebron forcing Dan Gilbert to pay all his buddies to absurd contracts. I don't think he would have gotten that same contract if he didn't have Lebron and Lebron's best friend Rich Paul as his agent. The Cavs are at 108 million this year. The salary cap this year is around 70 million so you can see the amount of money Gilbert has dished out to keep this team together. The cap jumps to about 92 million next year and the Cavs are still way over it.

Don't get me wrong, I personally think James still has some development left, but if you think about NBA Scouts and what they usually go for is someone with freak athleticism and a high ceiling, unfortunately James isn't a freak athlete, he is a damn good rebounder, but can it translate when everyone on the court can jump out of the gym and practice on working on positioning, etc. every single day?

I think there are different standards. Yes, those guys are tantalizing, but big guys/low post players are different. I think it's more important to have a good sense around the rim, pass well, and rebound, then to be able to dunk from the free throw line. There will always be a place for those guys in the league. That's the category I see James in. I think he produced more than his averages would have you believe. He had some monster games. Had he played down low his whole career and established himself as our primary big by his senior season, I think there's a good chance he's considered one of the best post players in all of college basketball. Obviously, hypotheticals don't amount to much, but that's what I meant as far as his potential for development.

James would whine and hang/shake his head at the ref after almost every foul call. I can't be the only one who noticed this. He still played great basketball and I don't think it affected his game at all so it wasn't much of a problem, but it was like he thought the refs had some sort of strange conspiracy against him every game. Wally Ellenson, a 6-foot-6 redshirt junior guard, will not be a part of the Marquette men's basketball team next season, the program confirmed on Thursday.
A dual-sport athlete in basketball and track and field — Ellenson is a four-time All-American in the high jump — he has one season of indoor track eligibility left entering 2016-'17 and can remain at Marquette on a full athletic scholarship if he chooses.
"We appreciate the contributions Wally has made during his two years with the program and wish him the best of luck the remainder of the season in the high jump and moving forward," head coach Steve Wojciechowski said in a release.
Ellenson, who transferred to Marquette in 2014 after spending two years competing in both sports at Minnesota, appeared in 29 of Marquette's 33 games this season. His games played and total minutes (254) were both collegiate-highs, and he averaged 1.9 points and 2.2 rebounds while playing 8.8 minutes per contest.
His best games came in home losses to Xavier and Villanova. He scored 9 points and grabbed 8 rebounds against the Musketeers on Jan. 16 and recorded a career-high 11 points against the Wildcats on Feb. 27.
During his redshirt year in 2014-'15, Ellenson competed in both indoor and outdoor track. He set a school record with a jump of 7 feet, 53/4 inches in his first meet with the Golden Eagles in January 2015. He is currently competing with Marquette's outdoor track team and if he reaches or exceeds his personal-best mark in competition again, he would qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in July.
Earlier this month, Henry Ellenson, Wally's younger brother, declared for the NBA draft after a record-breaking freshman season at Marquette.
With the news that Wally Ellenson will no longer be a member of the team, Marquette has one open men's basketball scholarship for the 2016-'17 season. The spring signing period ends on May 18.

If you remember the 30 for 30 documentary on Miami football (the second one), they talk about a number of guys getting track scholarships and walking onto the football team. It was okay as long as they were legitimate track and field athletes. That was how they got around scholarship restrictions after their probation in the mid-1990s.
If Marquette is willing to revoke Ellenson's scholly, they'd better have someone awesome as a Plan B.

I'm not sure what Miami did in the mid-90's, but you can't do that anymore. Any athlete that was recruited and received financial aid from the school, whether a scholarship for that sport or otherwise counts against the scholarship limit:

I have a friend who is a huge Marquette fan, and we were discussing this option. He has heard it is likely one of two things. The first is that Wojo needed a scholarship and used Wally as the sacrificial lamb to get it. The second, and to me sounds more legitimate, was that Wally has always been more focused on Track and Field and has his eye set on Rio. Because of this, he has been less involved in a lot of the offseason stuff than other scholarship athletes and it was an issue in the locker room this past year. Wojo then told him he has to be at all offseason events or he is no longer welcome to be a part of the team, thus where they are now.

Whatever the reason, it wasn't a mutual decision. Both Ellensons and their parents unfollowed Wojo and Marquette basketball on twitter a couple days before the news broke, so I'm guessing they weren't too thrilled about what went down.

To be clear, I meant to say that it wasn't mutual in any way. The point I was making was mostly that if it were the latter, I find it hard to blame Wojo too much. Of course, he did take him and provide him a scholarship to get Henry knowing he was a two-sport athlete, so he should have been prepared for the accompanying issues.

They've just kinda owned us in league play. We've had a vastly superior program to them in the last 3 years and yet we're 2-5 against them. Only team that we are worse off against is Nova at 1-6. But that one is at least understandable.
Had you told me 3 years ago that we'd be 5-2 against Gtown and 2-5 against SHU I wouldn't have believed it.

FYI on Whitehead, I have heard grumblings that he was doing team workouts and didn't pay the expenses himself. If he had stayed in college he would have likely missed the first 5-10 games depending on the number of workouts.

Depends how the expenses were paid. Agents can't cover things but some restrictions have been lifted. NBA teams can now pay for necessary expenses of a workout within a 48-hour period, as long as class isn't missed.

Not that it matters now, of course, but that's an interesting tidbit for the future.

Considering the source I guess that this is stat based. But it validates the work that all conference members have put in to prove the non-football BE was the way to go. 2 of top 3 conferences are 10 members/round-robin ones.
