The only worse way to insult rap would be to call it a hair band.
OK, then hair band it is!
I admit to having had bad experiences sitting in AAU and high school gyms for countless hours and frequently having to go outside to get away from it. Is there a rule that it has to be louder than commercial aircraft? I'm also skeptical of "music" where I'm not allowed to say some of the words in the lyrics, but that's a whole other issue.

Good God, NO! The only worse way to insult rap would be to call it a hair band. Disco wishes in its wildest dreams that it could be rap.

Nas can rap his ass off, and correct me if I'm wrong, he was strictly doing the Illmatic album on tour last summer? But let's be honest, his beat selection is pretty awful and sometimes he can put a person to sleep.

This has always been my biggest complaint as well and why I don't enjoy Nas as much as I should. The beat is part of what makes rap enjoyable. Nas needs a Dre or Rick Rubin or something.

And I'm stealing this point from someone I've read but the name escapes me, he had that on Illmatic with Premier, Pete Rock, and others but he just got bad at beat selection after that.
Plus, Nas fans are insane and act like he's the second coming of Christ.

Doesn't he have an album titled God's Son?
Not that he's alone. Most rappers think they are the 2nd coming.
Oh god. Lyrics aren't everything. Talib Kweli and Common have lyrics and they suck.
Agreed, but lyrics are a lot harder to come by. I can't listen to Talib all the time, but I respect the hell out of what he does. Producers don't get enough credit. The guy that comes to mind is Big Jerm who did Kush&OJ for Wiz and Mac Miller's early stuff. Wiz hasn't made anything half worth listening to since.

Yeah but the problem with Wiz is that he has horrible flows, can't rap, and has shitty lyrics. He NEEDS beats to survive.

That was a different shot earlier in the game. I think the one he's refering to is the slam that almost hit him in the face, that he rebounded and passed directly to a crieghton player. All around Bad.......

Not quite a tweet, but from Mark "Club Trillion" Titus:
I, too, worship at the Church of Stainbrook.
Now, let us pray:
Even though I take an Uber through the valley
of the shadow of death,
I fear no evil, for you are with me.
Your goggles and your beard — they comfort me.
When you eventually open your restaurant,
you will prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of Stainbrook
forever.
Amen.

I go the other way on this. I like to think of the Duke kid who was caught crying on camera 10 years ago at the ACC championship against Maryland. He's probably elated about Duke in the catbird's seat to win another title (even if 99.9% of the world will be cheering for Wisconsin on Monday night).
Needless to say, this was also a complete 180 degrees from the last time Wisconsin fans were at Lucas Oil Stadium for another type of championship game.

I don't know what Jalen's reach is (other than really long), but let's say it's within 5" of Thomas Robinson, whose is 8'10". If Jalen's reach is 9'3", his vertical is at least 36" since he touched the highest rung.
I know what you mean, though. Jalen doesn't jump very high a lot of times when he dunks. I don't think he needs to, though, because he's so quick off the ground. He was looking into the rim on the off-the-backboard alley oop from Dee, though.

Were Bilas or Irving involved in fights on national TV moments earlier?
paulxu
05-05-2015, 10:32 AM
Of course not. But somehow it's OK for him to use that language?
Bilas, in the first moments after the fight, ripped off a reactionary slew of holier-than-thou sanctions and fatherly-esqe stern suggestions for how to handle the situation. He said:
“Very disappointed in comments of Lyons and Holloway after UC-XU game. That’s not toughness. That’s classless. They should both apologize.”
“I’ve always loved the UC-XU rivalry, but it has been on the edge for too long. Instead of players, perhaps they should suspend the rivalry.”
“I respect ballers that fight to win, not fight. You want to fight? There are units in Afghanistan that can use you. Otherwise, play ball.”
“Next year, XU-UC hoop game should be canceled. Players should go to Philly to watch Army-Navy football game. They’d learn real toughness.”
I don't give him a pass on this nonsense. I would have been more impressed if he'd bothered to bring up the sucker punch or head stomp.
Players get pushed all the time in basketball games. None of that was an excuse for what followed. But he couldn't wait to rip Tu for the same words he uses in his morning tweet.

4* 74 overall by Scout

Hence, the "mode'esque" reference.
The coaching staff know what they want and need. My initial reaction was more about going after players under 6 feet tall as a general consideration, given the nature of the Big East.

I don't really think Mack has "built Xavier into a big-time program", more like he has kept Xavier at the high level it was been at for 10+ years.

I guess everyone would like to "sneak up" on people. I believe XU is very close to being a big time program. Folks who know college basektball know it's a very solid program. Are we Duke, UK, NC? No but a trip to the Final 4 will finally kick down the door. Xavier is right on the verge of being a regular palyer with the big boys. It all comes down to recruits and Xavier is making progress in that area.

I think by the time league play rolls around that spot will be situated, but there could be some bumps along the road early, especially if we play a team that pressures a lot.
I like Myles a lot, but i don't think he'd hold up very well running point against a team that likes to pressure full court.

Even if Sumner is the better overall player (especially with his size/athleticism advantage of LA) - it doesn't necessarily mean he starts. Maybe Mack wants a facilitating PG to start the game with Remy, Tre & Jalen, with Sumner as the change of pace guard who can get his own.

I would expect Austin to be "ahead" right now as has a full year under his belt. But I'm also curious to know how this is being determined by Andy? Sumner brings an entirely different element to this team that if and when he's ready, he's going to play a lot.

Is he still about 6'5"? Was it a real 6'5"? Has he grown any more? Can he stay in front of a good PG on defense? I'm excited to see him play based on all I've heard, but I'm curious to see what his game looks like! He got so few minutes early last year it's hard for me to tell.

Sumner has played PG his entire basketball career, so I'm not really sure why people question whether or not he can play the position. I would be initially concerned with his defense, but that's a concern for most freshman PGs.

Hard to judge his exact height, because who knows whose listed height is right, but he looks tall. If Macura is his listed height, Edmond looks every bit of 6'7", although it's hard to judge because of the angle of the shot and the fact that he is standing slightly closer to the camera. Regardless, he looks tall and it looks like he has put on a lot of muscle in the last year.

I believe Makinde played some PG too, but it's entirely possible to outgrow the position making this a fair question. Don't get me wrong, I'd love a big, long stud at PG and I hope he can be that guy. With all the growing he's done I'm just eager to see how this plays out.

It's possible that I've become cynical as the seasons go by, but I feel like I hear this about some unproven player every year....
"Churchill Odia is a can't miss prospect and will be the next great PG at Xavier"
"Will Caudle is dominating David West in practice"
"Adrian Graves is the best player on the floor during practice"
"Johnny Wolf is surprising everyone with his athleticism and decision making"
"Jeff Robinson is really going to turn it on this year"
"Jay Canty will come in and make everyone forget about Dez"
How many young and unproven players really give us positive surprises above what was expected of them? Jason Love in 2008 comes to mind. Was buried on the bench is a freshman and become a solid contributor off the bench as a sophomore on an Elite 8 team. But beyond Love and a 10 game stretch out of James Farr two years ago, every young/unproven player pretty much delivers as expected.
Look, I hope I'm wrong, but the most likely scenario is that LAJ and Sumner both show flashes of greatness mixed in with frustration. They'll learn as they go and will hopefully become upper classmen PG leaders reminiscent of Chalmers, Lavender, Holloway and Davis. Just be patient.

Looking at him standing next to Jalen, he looks at least 6'6" - 6'7." He also looks pretty jacked (at least his arms). I'd be curious to see how much weight/muscle he has added since stepping on campus last summer. I think I remember him being listed around like 160-165 lbs when he was coming in last summer. He looks much bigger than that now. Anyone have any idea how much he currently weighs? Dude looks pretty filled out..
I am excited to see how he performs this year. If we can get average/decent PG play between him and Larry Austin, I think this team could be very special. So many weapons on the roster (i.e. Jalen, Bluiett, Remy, Myles/Macura shooting, etc.). Also, anyone know how Makinde London has been looking thus far? He is another guy that I am very excited to see suit up this year. From what I have seen, his athleticism is freakish.

I hear what you are saying but you can say there are plenty that did pan out as well....Travis Taylor Senior year, Derrick Brown, Jordan Crawford (we heard rumblings during his year in practice he was the best player in the gym...he had an average freshman year at Indiana...nothing like the Crawford we came to know). We have even had freshmen step into major rolls like Dez, Trevon, Tu...and outside of a bump or bruise here or there they will extremely good contributors.

To be fair to Canty, he actually had a solid college career. He was just going to be third on the depth chart if he stayed. JMart was out-performing him in practice, and Dez was going to be an immediate impact freshman. Both of those guys committed after him, so I wonder if the staff would have even taken a commitment from Canty if it had been the other way around.
I've always maintained that if you had combined Canty's level of ability with Latham's position, you would have had a solid four-year player. Canty was the only one in that class who was starting to get playing time (and actually didn't look bad out there), but then he broke his foot in late December.

It's 2016. Most PG's have played combo guard their entire lives.
In the sense that most are scoring point guards and some are really shooting guards trying to play point, yes. There we're talking about the kind of guys who aren't really strong at either position, usually because they aren't enough a facilitator for one and they are too short for the other. Summer, however, really is the kind of guard that could play shooting guard well. He already had good size for the off-guard spot when he initially committed at 6'3", to go with his playmaking ability. He has some skills as a point guard and it might be the right position for him, but it's not like he's Dee Davis, Larry Austin, Tu Holloway, or even Quentin Goodin.

Oh yeah, I was only an okay CC/track runner, but I totally get the difference for them. It's not surprise that a guy built like Redford holds the record, because most of them aren't built anything like that. One of the coaches at my high school coached both soccer and baseball, and as absolute requirement to make varsity, players had to run a sub-6 mile. For the soccer guys, this wasn't that big of a deal (if you can't run a mile that fast, you have no business playing varsity soccer at a high level). For the baseball guys, though, it seemed kind of crazy at times. There were some guys who simply weren't built to be able to reasonably hit that mark. I always assumed that he offered a little leeway to those guys after the fact, but he scared them into believing they would get cut before the run so that they would work their ass off in preparation.

We had to do 2 miles in under 12 mins for our HS soccer team. Even as soccer players -- who played year-round -- that was tough. It's a lot easier to run when you're chasing someone or something.

Admittedly I am not an athlete let alone an elite athlete, but 5:15 is a very good time for even an elite athlete. I used to run (before running caused me to have both knees replaced) and I ran a lot of races, mostly 10K races with a few half marathons thrown in. The fastest time I ever ran a mile in was a tick under 7 minutes.
