Would assume because its an open offer and its the first 100 kids in line it would be allowed without much thought. As long as its not used just for student athletes because of them having athlete status. He isn't violating any rules if it is possible for anyone to get it. (From what I know)

You, know,

If the udump administration is so lax on controlling their students and security allows this crap to happen, this could have reprecussions on the First Round being played there. I would guess the NCAA isn't real happy with reports of these antics.

I like the comment about how they don't view us as a rival anymore and we still think of them as a rival yet they will still buy tickets to go to a Xavier game to boo them.

I looked at the link to the UD board because I couldn't believe that you had it right. But you did. Now I understand when they say that you can't make this stuff up! Gawd, what a bunch of losers. I hope the cryers never even sniff at a chance to join our league.

I define a rivalry in the following way: If you heard that [Team]'s stadium/Gym was burning to the ground, and your initial gut reaction is to smile or laugh rather than hope everyone is ok, then that is a rival. (I'm not saying I wouldn't eventually have concern for the safety of people, just my split second gut reaction).

I give this privilege to UC, dayton, and kansas.

Now build a cohesive team!

I honestly don't get the lack of "team" sentiment regarding this team. I felt this team was the most cohesive unit we've had during the Mack years. I thought they shared the ball tremendously well. They played more like a team than any team we've had in 5 years. The problem....they couldn't shoot. A little bit they couldn't play D (mostly against the three), but really this team just couldn't shoot. Farr didn't make a three during conference play (at least it felt that way). We all know the struggles M. Davis had. Semaj and Martin were fine. D. Davis was inconsistent even if the overall numbers were OK....he was sort of 4 for 5 or 1 for 6. Nothing consistently in between.

When this team was playing well and winning in the beginning of the year, the thing I enjoyed so much about the team was it's ability to play as a unit with no one needing to score 20 pts. They passed. They shared.

They were STILL doing doing that at the end of the year. How many "extra" passes got the ball into the hands of an open Myles Davis during the second half of the year? A ton. He just missed the shots.

I remember "The Run" well. I watched everyone of those games. A big "mythical" deal is made of Chalmers talking to the troops and rallying them....and the march to history began. The reality? Chalmers started hitting shots he had been missing all year. I loved Chalmers. Thought he was a gamer. Tremendous leader, but up to the talk he gave in January....he had had a disappointing season. After that point the runners in the lane started falling. The 3 pointers found net...not rim. In short, he started making shots. When you make shots, suddenly you seem like a different and better team.

This year's team did it in reverse. Early on they made shots, late they did not. I'm tired of their cohesiveness and effort being questioned--even late in the year they passed, they shared and they gave tremendous effort. Where some of you saw a team that got down and time after time would attempt comebacks and could never get over the hump. I saw a team that got down and no matter how many times they were repelled at coming back....they continued to TRY to come back. This team while frustrating in its lack of results, will go down as one of my favorite teams of the last 5 or 6 years.

I am confused. What is supposed to say? He will be at Xavier next year and he isn't going to Wake. I imagine he is very comfortable coaching in his back yard close to friends and family. to be honest I am sure he would like a raise and if he wins next year that should come. Will he leave Xavier someday? Maybe. But he won't be leaving this year. He is probably the most committed coach ever at Xavier but at the same time he will do what he has to do to pad his wallet. Pretty much everyone does it in every profession.

Mack is clearly playing the game of showing interest in another school to get what he wants/needs from Xavier. What that entails is anyone's guess, but as soon as his name popped up on the radar for the Wake Forest job it was pretty obvious he's looking to gain some leverage.

I personally think he wants to stay. The gamble with that move though is that you have to be prepared to take the job you're showing interest in if you don't get what you want from your current school.

Like I said, I'd rather him answer the question and tell the truth. So yeah, if it's possible that he may leave, then say that. If he talked to them, then say that. It's not a big deal...happens everyday with applicants from all walks of life.

It's just like when asked "if they talked to _______", and they say "no". Yep. Get more guards in there, and you can have guys like Martin and London play almost entirely at the 4. You also need to have bigger wings to do this, guys that have no problem playing at the 3: Abell, Bluiett, and Macura. Heck, Bluiett could actually play at the 4 in a small lineup like Dez did.

London is a 6' 10" stretch four. :) Doubt he plays the three.

His stock blew up late Senior year where he's gotten interest from teams like Pitt, Providence, UCONN, etc. He's pretty good, but would lose a year of eligibility if App State doesn't let him free!

Sumner grew about 4" from 6' 1" to 6' 5". He has a great handle, changes speed wisely, and an incredible outside shot. With the added height I'm not sure how well that will translate on the defensive end. He may end up being better suited at the two or three.

Either way, Xavier has a lot of shooters coming in. Sumner, Bluiett, Macura and London

Sumner is 6'4 max and is a sure thing at PG. Macura is a 2, Bluiett 3, London 4 and O'Mara 5. One for each position. Works out well. Also, gimmfd wasn't talking about Sumner in the post you quoted. Think he was talking about Devonte Graham

He's trying to be a combo forward, and both the good handle and the athleticism contribute to that possibility. More guards and wings would cut down on Xavier's desire/need for that to happen.

Sumner could easily be 6'5 by now. He might still be 6'4, but that is by no means the "max." He might actually be outgrowing the point guard position altogether, though having a guy that tall at point some of the time has its benefits. What positions he plays depends more on his defense. Does he have the lateral quickness to guard speedy point guards? Will he develop the strength and bulk to guard small forwards? Etc, etc.

Lateral quickness is a different story, though. I honestly don't know how strong he is in that area, as deficiencies don't usually get exposed there until a player has to guard D1 players regularly.

He isn't. Sumner is really quick, but Semaj had another gear that almost no players have.

And once again, a player can be quick end-to-end or driving from the top of the arc, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're laterally quick.

I'm guessing the other game the tweet was referring to their Louisville game. Also, the Enquirer had an article yesterday about what UC plans on doing with Fifth Third, this quote made my day...

I'm curious, if it is not too personal, what you would advise your son to do. Would you advise him to try and play DIII or to just pick a school he knows he would like and is a good school/has a major he is interested in?

Or if he can play DIII and find those other things too, would you advise him to do that.

That's a really good question (and one not asked of me, but here's my two cents). I suspect the right answer is different for every kid. Our son had numerous options in a couple sports. He liked the attention of recruiters, but he also had had enough of the injuries (ACL, MCL, broken arm, multiple stingers, etc.). He was never going to make a living playing sports and between pre-paid and good grades college was largely paid for, so he decided to focus on school and the things that he would need to make a living going forward. His time wasn't dominated by sports and he's on track for a double or triple major after next year. (He takes summer classes too.) That would not be the case if he was spending the time needed to play a sport. His GPA would probably have suffered to some degree which may have affected internships and graduate school acceptances. He's happy with his path. Having said that, friends from an AAU hoops team found a DII or DIII school up north where their son could actually play with his older brother for a few years. It was about the love of the game. Tuition and scholarships were not a significant issue for them (good for them!) so it was all about making a decision that would make him happy. He's a very bright kid and the family is well off so he could afford to make the decision that made him happy. Others we know from AAU went to ACC and SEC schools on full rides to relieve the financial pressure or just plain make college possible. So, the long answer made short is - every situation is different. I just hope the kid loves it, because it's a big commitment on top of the academic requirements and 99.9% will never make a living playing sports.

A key thing for all parents is to make sure it's what the kids want. So many parents try to get the kids to do what the didn't or couldn't do. Don't force a kid to live your dreams. My son is only 9 and I never forced him to play sports, even though I'm a sports junkie. Well, this year he finally decided to play Little League and he's having fun. He may never do anything more with the sport than this, but that's fine. (Although he already looks pretty good as a catcher after only about 5 practices, so maybe he'll be better than I expected!)

Yeah good responses and advice.

I am not a parent yet but I knew a lot of kids from high school who ended up playing small college sports, a lot of DII and DIII, from baseball to football and basketball. I would say from my high school, of the kids who went on to play any college sport, and especially non division 1 sports, 85% quit after a year or two and transferred to a different school.

I think it is hard for kids to give up playing sports, especially when they are good enough to play at any college level, but in my experience once most get to college they arent happy playing any longer. A lot of them went to play at small schools they would have never considered going to if it wasnt to play a sport and they end up unhappy because the school isnt a place they really love. Sometimes it may seems necessary if they are getting a grant or scholarship to pay for school, and I definitely understand that, but it seems like going to play small college sports ends up poorly. You really have to absolutely love it and be completely dedicated because at that level you truly are playing for love of the game. Its a big commitment.

I'd imagine if I were advising my kid I would push them in the direction of choosing a school they really felt they could see themselves at for four years and had a program they were interested in as opposed to playing DIII sports at a school they may not have ever considered if it werent for getting the opportunity to play their sport. However, like you all have said, each case is very different.

In some ways my son benefitted from his youthful ignorance. It was a Groucho Marx kind of deal - I wouldn't want to play for any school who wants me as a player. What he didn't know was they were some damn good schools! He knew Alabama and Florida weren't afraid of them. ((He has some funny stories... with the ball in his hands, "I knew the kid on the left and the kid in the right were both going to Florida, so i tried to hit the kid in the middle as fast as I could") Having a degree from Bucknell, Rhodes College or Carnegie Mellon, etc. isn't a horrible thing. One Ivy League school told him to get his SAT score up, and West Point told him to get his 40 time down. I forget the details, but it was a fun time. I was disappointed it ended, but I'm also glad it ended. Time to grow up. But I was NEVER one of those parents who pushed or thought their kids accomplishments were anything more than a good game.

I feel like your son is probably the exception. You should probably pull him out of school now to focus on sports (what's he in? fourth grade? once you can read, what more do you need?) The world needs the next great catcher! :-)

PS - enjoy these years.

I agree and I don't agree. Never make your kid live your dreams - those are quite true. I have forced both of my kids to play sports - why? Because in my case, if I didn't they would have never moved from the couch. That's just the kind of kids they are. I started both off in soccer, they both hated it and I let them move on. My son also played t-ball/baseball but once kid pitch started he also was done. But he loves, absolutely loves, playing basketball. If we hadn't made him play it his first year, he never would have known how much he would love it. Same thing with my daughter, she is now in her 5th year of softball and loves it. If either came to me and said they didn't want to play, I would let them be done. But sometimes you have to make them try different things because how do they know if they'll like it otherwise?

I'm with Muskie1000. I'm absolutely forcing my kids to play sports, but at the ages they are now (5 and 8), they just discovering what they like. The 8 year old played soccer for a couple of years and decided that she didn't like it, so now she plays volleyball and loves it. She also does Scouts, basketball, and T-ball. My 5 year-old plays soccer and t-ball, and just started basketball. They both have done dance and swimming.

We'll see how it goes - my aim in all of this is not to force them to play sports forever, but to force them to do something. If they find something they love more than anything else and stick to it, great! If they need to keep trying other things, also great.

But...they're going to do something!

I am talking more about sticking with sports more than starting sports. At a very early age they don't know what they want or don't want. We forced piano lessons and all kinds of other stuff as well. At some point though, they can make their own decisions and it's not just because they're too shy or their older brother swayed them or some other crazy reason. There are a lot of over bearing parents out there living vicariously through their kids. In Florida, if your kid is any good at baseball, there's a lot of pressure to basically play all year long. They want them to drop other sports and specialize at an early age. If you're that good you can play different sports. And as they get older, if they'd rather play the piano or be on the debate team instead of play sports, that was ok too. We knew a lot of parent whose kids were playing sports because the parents had to much invested in it financially (tennis and golf) or emotionally. They were determined to get a scholarship and an olympic medal. These kids were rarely more than slightly above average. As soon as our kids tired of one sport, we moved on. Sometimes they came back to that sport years later. We thought that keeping them busy would help to keep them out of trouble, but it turned out that the sports kids (often feeling superior and somewhat entitled) are where trouble was often found. If kids are going to make bad decisions, they will find an opportunity to do so... you just do your best. If I could do it over they would be forced to have part time jobs.

I am NOT trying to tell anyone else how to parent their kids, just sharing our experience. Their are just too many dads out there (and some moms) who think they've accomplished something when their kid makes a shot. And too many kids playing a sport who are only there because it's required. It's a balancing act. I'm not pro-couch-pototo, by any means.

Well, for us money is an issue. D-III schools are really expensive and so he would need to get a substantial academic/grants/aid type of package for us to swing it. It's not fair to him or us to be saddled in debt, just so he can play basketball in college. He has only recently drawn some interest from some schools. One of the school's tuition is $46,000 a year and that is not including room and board. It's crazy.

He plays AAU for the competition and he enjoys it more than his HS team (that's another story which I won't address here). As stated by others, it's a family decision. If we can swing it and he wants to play D-III and the school is a good fit, then we will try. If not, then then we will go different path w/ college search. I would love to watch him play b-ball in college but I am not going into six figure debt in order to accomplish that.

We still have time to figure it all out.

Kids Sports 101. It has to be THEIR idea. Also, you have to WORK with the kid on the basics before they ever get started. That's right, an hour in the backyard or a park a few times a week. They just don't automatically pick up the basics by going to the first practice. If it's not THEIR idea, you're wasting everybody's time. In Baseball, practice proper throwing techniques, hitting off a tee, fielding ground balls, judging fly balls, etc.,etc. THEN sign 'em up.

Kind of echoing what a lot of people have said, but I think the best thing is to get a kid playing a lot of different sports and let them choose what they want. I am not a parent yet, but I have coached swimming at a few different levels, country club in the summer and USA in the winter, for a number of years now. The biggest thing I have noticed as a coach is that parents often times force kids to commit entirely to one sport at a very young age. In swimming at least, this means practice in the morning before school, after school, and travel just about every weekend. Making a kid do that from 5th grade on is a recipe for disaster. Sports are meant to be fun and it stops becoming fun when it is your entire life. If a kid wants to totally commit to sport in high school that is great, but variety of experience at a young age is a very valuable thing.

1994 - Clinton Springs (I think), a band, undercooked baked potatoes, a pig, cops, adult entertainment and a horned up dude in a pig suit getting chased by Brian Grant.

I was there!!! (Not wearing horns or a pig suit...)

Maybe not when you arrived..... can you prove that wasn't the case before you left? (Do you remember leaving?)
P.S. Wish I'd have been there.

Two teams need to be out, right?

It'll be interesting to see how that is decided.

I have to believe the bottom 4/5 at the end of each year will be considered to sit out. And it'll be rotated so that every team gets to participate 6 times. Really need Depaul to be at least competitive again. I think Seton Hall will be better and Butler can't possibly get much worse.

I hope they just pick the two (presumably) worst teams to sit every year, even if that's the same two teams (read DePaul and Seton Hall) every season. This isn't CYO where everyone gets a minimum amount of time they have to play. I want the Big East to be competitive in this series and it's going to be difficult enough without having to count on an automatic loss or two in our bottom feeders.

They already said everyone in the Big East wil participate at least 6 out of the 8 years (is that what it was?).

Actually, yes, it is like that. Each Big East team is guaranteed 6 years of participation and each Big Ten team is guaranteed 4 years. I'm probably less concerned with DePaul having to play 6 times compared to a Big East team having to play Rutgers, Purdue, Northwestern and Penn State 4 years.
