It's down to us and DePaul, who just recently hired his high school coach.
Was this a coincidence, or a wink, wink deal? If it's X vs DePaul straight up I feel a lot better about that. Fingers crossed!

1. It's in Chicago which is awesome;
2. hmmmm.......

And a new arena, which could be a huge factor if X didn't have a newly renovated Cintas Center and new athletic buildings as well.

Playing time. DePaul definitely has that for any player worth a damn. And the relationship with the coach shouldn't be discounted in this circumstance (though I don't believe Strus had any such connections).

Best single season is Crawford, hands down. Best overall transfer career = Lavender. Most important transfer = Mack.

If you want to go back a little further....I'd say Anthony Hicks. IMO he was the first "big time" talent to play at the school since the late 50's-early 60's and helped X have success that attracted more talented players who led to even more success, which has led to what we see today.
It's been a process and an evolution and there are many many players, coaches, administrators that have been a part of it.

I believe you are thinking of Stan Kimbrough. Played with Larkin. He was from Central Florida. Came here in 1986 after playing vs. X the year before while at UCF. Hicks' last year was 1983.

I'm gonna add one more- JD Barnett a teammate of Byron Larkin's.
JD was a small forward who was a starter and an integral part of the 1986-1987 team that beat Missouri for XU's first NCAA win. He hit some big baskets in that game- kind of an old school Malcolm Bernrd. Peter Gillen took JD in as a transfer.
Malcolm Bernard will have a special place in my Xavier Blue Blooded heart for a long long time. That enthusiasm, leadership and infectious smile was special. The fact that he got to dribble out the last few seconds of the Arizona game was so damn appropriate.
If we can get transfers like him every couple of years or so, we'll be just fine.

Glad you brought up Brian Thornton.
To me, he was an example of Xavier coming into its own, both as a school and with its basketball program. If I recall correctly, he transferred in from Vanderbilt, having passed on offers from Boston college and Michigan. He was looking for a strong academic school to go along with a solid basketball program through which to finish his career. In fact, I believe he was interested at the time in pursuing law school.
And he provided me yet one additional reason to hate LaSalle. He was injured against those idiots and never played again.

Barnett was one of the best lockdown defenders Xavier has seen. A perfect compliment to a team of scorers. Strong, moved his feet well, and could "shoot" for the steal. I can still hear Gillen yelling "Shoot him JD!"
Unsung, or at least undersung, player.

de gustibus.....No accounting for taste. The big deal this is for players and fans. It's like fashion week for College athletes. Hell, The Premier League now trots out its "kits" for the new season with player models at press events. We can't be far behind. Market. brand.
I like the game, the athletes in the arena, the conflict and resolution. The heroes and villains on the court. The coaches, the fans. I'm sure it's partially generational, but our team looking cool, and recruits who have to see our cool uniforms, leaves me....cool.
but there is no accounting for my tastes.

I used to think that whenever the "who will be in the Big East" dust settled, we would resume a home and home type deal with UD (twice a year if IN conference and every other year if out of conference). I'm now convinced that Xavier will never step foot in that arena as long as Chris Mack is coach (unless for some type of NCAA game). To which I say, good riddance.

You know what I'm weirdly worried about? The fact that if we don't play them the rivalry will probably die. For example WVU/VT played in football this year for the first time since 05, and players on both teams had no ideas it used to be a heated rivalry. I could see something like that happening.

When we played them in Orlando in 2015, I'm pretty sure no one on either team had ever played in a Xavier Dayton game before. I don't think that affected either fan base in the slightest. The only ones it will affect are the young fans that never knew the rivalry.

Well yeah of course for the fans (just like it was at Fed-Ex Field) the game is still important, but I just think the games are a bit better when the players absolutely hate each other. I love those type of rivalries, granted you could say that's been dying as of late too with AAU teaming up people who go to rival schools and what not. The fans won't ever forget, that's part of fandom.

Honestly, I like having another team other than UC to completely despise, though Seton Hall and Butler sure as hell are doing their part to make me dislike them. I don't know, looking at it, our programs are going in opposite directions, which I'm much more happier with, but I like the rivalry because it reminds me of being in Cintas for the double OT my Freshman year, where I'm buying beers with my fake while my RA is standing next to me. Well I think that's a completely different argument, I don't think any fan would trade sentiment in match-ups that were formed in the A-10 for a spot in the Big East. UD however is different because of the hate, and the passion of the games. I'd like to play them and keep the rivalry, but I'd much rather them come to Cintas in order for that to happen. Wouldn't you think their athletic department would WANT to try to break the Jimmy Carter streak??

The players rarely hate eachother. Most of them play AAU together, play during the summer together, etc. This is just something made up by fans to try and intensify a rivalry.

Right that's what I'm saying, I think that's a more recent thing though, where 10+ years ago they did legitimately hate each other, but the way AAU has become more booming and popular, it's basically impossible for recruits to truly hate each other unless it's for a complete other reason than school affiliation.

Could care less about Dayton and can't believe it's still a topic of discussion this many years after joining a new conference and moving on from scheduling them. Lots of teams out there to schedule and we should build our rivalries based on the conference and naturally with the crosstown team.

Ask Greg Christopher about playing UD, and he will give you a straight forward answer.
There is little incentive to play UD, especially at the Dump. I really don't see them on our schedule unless it is an early season tourney. If our last matchup is any indication (30 point beat down) I don't think they provide the same challenge as in previous years. I have no problem bringing them in for a bye game, but there is no reason to play them on their home floor.

84 of the 90 games will include at least 1 team that made the 2017 NCAA Tournament
That's because the round robin of St. John's, DePaul and Georgetown take up the other 6. Those must have been fun games for FS2 and CBS Sports Network to fight over.

Chris Mack: Trevon Bluiett is "right there" among the best players I've ever coached. STORY @FanRagSports:
https://www.fanragsports.com/rothstein-xavier-coach-says-bluiett-among-best-hes-ever-coached/
Jon Rothstein tweets:
Greetings from the Cintas Center. Here for Xavier practice. The door is open for the Musketeers in the Big East.
Early prediction on Xavier's starting five: Quentin Goodin, J.P. Macura, Trevon Bluiett, Kaiser Gates, Tyrique Jones.
Palpable buzz at Xavier regarding freshman wing Naji Marshall. Athletic wing will allow Musketeers to go small with Trevon Bluiett at PF.
The biggest surprise here today at Xavier? How well Paul Scruggs is shooting the basketball. Could add a different dynamic if this keeps up.
So much Goran Suton (left handed version) in Kerem Kanter....
Kerem Kanter reminds me of former Michigan State big man Goran Suton. Skilled big men that can really step away from the basket. Face up 5.
Xavier's makeup isn't exactly the same as it was two years ago, but Musketeers' potential is comparable. Look like a legit 2-3 seed.
Two big physical impressions from Xavier: 1. J.P. Macura has added 10 pounds of muscle 2. Trevon Bluiett is in the best shape of his life
Tyrique Jones is among the most physically imposing people I've ever seen in my entire life. Must have been left off the Mitchell Report.

Well we won't get the brand recognition as the blue bloods, but every single year we're improving our profile, and more people are taking notice. When I meet new people and tell them I went to Xavier for undergrad, they now say "Damn, basketball games must have been awesome there!!" Building a national brand takes time, and with the way our performance has gone in the last decade or so, we're slowly creeping up. It's improving year by year, so just sit back and enjoy it. We're creating a monster right now with solid recruiting classes, and impressive tournament wins. It's only a matter of time before we kick down the door to the Final 4, and I can realistically say I expect a Xavier national championship in my lifetime. I like the stages we're at, we're not at the "bandwagon" stage yet, but we're improving and gaining more fans each year. I'm excited to see what the future holds.

True, and come to think about it, my suggestion to include the tweet in a post is me being lazy. I dabbled in pacifism (not in Nam of course), and it isn't a good look on me.
Rather than click a link to take me to the quote, I just want to read it. I copy and paste mine, and it seems to be my laziest option. I own it, this is me wanting my messageboard life to be even easier. If you want me to help me with this, great. If not, that's cool too.

Apparently we didn’t wear the running man uniforms today because there were a few that went missing between when we left NYC and when we left for Nashville. From what I can gather, the morons who stole the jerseys felt the need to show the, off at Dana’s last night. It seems some noble young coed stole one of the jerseys back, and they are trying to convince the dumb ass to bring the rest of the stolen goods back to Dana’s.

Yeah, I just can’t help thinking that Louisville in utter chaos. Here is a school unwilling to fire a guy for hookers, nailing his equipment manager’s wife, and it took the FBI to get them to move. They even rehired their own retread adulterous coach. This just would not be a job I would consider.

No, I think it's more the fact that it hasn't been approved by the Board that is the issue here. Would normally be a rubber stamp, but Louisville's Board has has some major dysfunction.

4 million likely doesn't include all the incentives and shoe money that he will get. My guess is he is looking at north of $6 mil a year or more. That IS a significant boost.

Actually the point of my posting XU's Men BB tweet was that I thought it showed what a class program we have.
On him leaving, I'm just as mad as anyone (but maybe understand it more than some; who knows).
It's a damn tough pill to swallow. I hope we have someone in place soon, so that some stability returns to the program, and they can get to work building for next year.

Agree, it was a classy move by X. Most of us operate in the business world, where there are no compete clauses. We change jobs, but we don't gut the staff. We don't call all our old company's prospective employees to talk them out of joining that company, and coming with us. Coaches are a different deal, and it sucks.
