Who's planning to buy it when it comes out late this year? I'm interested in what comes out of the unveiling on Wednesday, if only for curiosity's sake.

Apparently, there will be no (or little) hardware changes, only a change in the way "games are played". There are leaked photos of the PS4 controller that show a touch screen in the middle of an elongated PS3 controller. My guess is that this change in the way games are played will be a push to cloud storage and OTA purchasing/downloading of games. The unit will see hardware specs very similar to the PS3, but with a much larger hard drive. Pssoibly something like a 3 TB drive.
Personally, I will have to wait and see what Microsoft is offering with the Xbox 720 before committing to either one. I am invested in the Xbox experience and would prefer to stay with it in the next generation, but if the rumors are true and Microsoft is pushing technology on the new system that will disallow the playing of 2nd hand/used games, I will refuse to buy it out of principle.

Really? That's a possibility? Well, that's total BS.

I'm so far behind in console wars - I have a Wii, that is the newest thing. Think I get more use out of my Atari 7800. (Yes, it still runs)
That said, if it is true that they are going to try to use some sort of DRM to prevent sharing or resale of games, that goes against everything all the way back to the Atari days. Who remembers before Gamespot, the days of borrowing or even trading cartridges amongst friends. If you're telling me they want to go to a model where, if I want to play a game, my only option is first hand purchase, or worse yet a monopolistic App Store then the price of games had better go way down.
Yeah I know, somewhere in the software license (that nobody has read, ever) it probably says somethign like "grant of a non-transferrable license to use the enclosed software on one console" but that's just not how people play games. Those that want to be first buy new games, they play those games, then take them back to GameStop or what have you, then the rest of us (yes, I shop Gamestop for my games) buy themused for a bit less, and the chain goes on. It its truly OTA digital download, that would just stink, like what if your console gets damaged. And think about game rentals. Is there a way to manage game rentals.
I could be wrong, as one should never underestimate the spending of an avid gamer, but if you told me "You can never sell, trade, or loan" this game, ever. I might be less likely to buy. And then you tell me I can't even do a Redbox $1 rental to see if I like the game first?

Agree Coaster. If they are going to a stream model I want to see a reduction in price.

I own a PS3 and used to own a Wii and Xbox 360. All had their strengths and weaknesses, and they all combined to reinforce one thing: brand loyalty is for suckers. I currently love my PS3 but if the PS4 has minimal hardware upgrades and MS puts out a great machine I'll jump in a heartbeat.

I agree, I would be less inclined to buy. I buy some games new, but there are other games for which I'm not willing to make that kind of investment, like Dante's Inferno and NCAA Basketball 10 (that one because it's buggy). That latter type of game I just won't buy, which means fewer games in total that I would end up owning, which makes me question whether or not I want to purchase the console in the first place for so few games...
Now if there's a big price reduction, I might still be interested. There are just very few games I'm willing to shell out $50-60 for. In this past year, that's only been Halo 4 and a PC game. Heck, the opportunities I have with PC gaming, especially since I own a good computer, would just make me uninterested in console gaming if they're going to try that shit.

I admit it, I'm a gamer. It's my crutch.
I have no confidence in Sony to come up with some revolutionary new system that will change the whole console genre. The company is losing money hand over fist and is looking for a stopgap money maker, which is what I think this new system will be. Reportedly neither the PS4 nor the Xbox (that's what the Xbox 720 will be called, Xbox) will allow reverse gaming for current games, and will REQUIRE an internet connection to play. Throw in the "no second hand games" aspect, the move to blueray discs, along with Sonys online system being hacked recently, I am leaning more and more towards just getting a kickass laptop and calling it a day. When Destiny comes out, I plan on giong Howard Hughes, locking myself in my puter room and not coming out for years...
Meh, who am I kidding? I will probably wait a year after the XBox release and then buy it, after the kinks are worked out. I use my current one too much for Netflix and Hulu and the whatnot apps that can be played on it to go without one.
I HATE dayton.

You might want to consider getting a Roku or equivalent to cover your non-gaming needs like Netflix and Hulu.
They both will require an internet connection? This is just getting worse and worse. What happens when the internet goes out for one reason or another? When that happens and I want to play a game, I'm generally not able to play one of my PC games, so I turn video games. With the next console, I can't? That's a load of BS.

I'll probably wait to see what each offers when finally released and go from there. I currently have PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii, but I don't want to go that route again. Of course, if I'm still hosting a radio show at that point, maybe I can swing a deal and get some free consoles for review purposes!

The announcement was definitely interesting, but it was more of a software demo than anything. I know it was important to Sony to be first out of the gates in this generation because Xbox was last time and they got the lion's share of gamers (American, anyway). The problem is, though, that it felt like Sony announced too early. I know they want to keep the hardware specs hidden from competitors, but the fact that they gave very generic descriptions of hardware structure worries me a bit that they won't meet their release date of later this year. I wouldn't be surprised in the least to see it delayed into next year.
I would like to believe what they say about using the Vita to play any and all PS4 games anywhere at any time. If that proves true, it would convince me not only to buy a PS4, but a Vita as well. In reality, though, I think we will be severly underwhelmed. Sony is fond of making bold "pie-in-the-sky" statements regarding system capabilities (anyone remember PS Home with the PS3 announcement?) that they fail to follow through on.
If nothing else, the Sony announcement got me excited for this year's E3 conference, and in particular the Microsoft announcement. I'm dripping with anticipation of seeing the hardware for each and seeing Microsoft's (claimed) system capabilities so I can compare, decide and start saving. These systems won't be cheap. Rumoured price points for the PS4 are $429 and $529.

I like what they have done with the new Wii U, and I have always liked my PS3. But I haven't heard anything about the PS4 that will make me run out and buy it when it is first released. As with many of these new systems, it seems best to let them get the bugs out first, improve any latent issues, and buy the console a year later.
I don't spend hours and hours playing video games myself, and my 6 year old son has enough consoles already to keep him busy.

Well, if internet rumors are true, Microsoft are feeling the heat from the Playstation event. Word on the web is that they are pushing the Xbox unveiling up to April from an originally expected June release party.

And we all know that there's nothing negative that ever comes from pushing up a console's time schedule!
