Once we head off to the Big East (or whatever it will be called), who will take over the mantle of flagship. Butler is coming with, so it won't be the Bulldogs. Personally, I'm liking VCU for the role. I think it's nice that we get to spend a year or two grooming them for the role. They've come in and made quite the impression.

I really really really wanted VCU to come with. Not only do they have the makings of a long lasting quality bball team, but from an athletic department standpoint, they "get it" in terms of positioning and branding.
I can see whoever is left of SLU, UMass and St. Joes taking over

Once X, Butler and another good team leave, the conference will be sinking. The flagship should represent the conference - so if the conference is sinking, the flagship must be Fordham.

I really hope that it's us, Butler and VCU as the initial 3 that get to leave for the new league whatever it's called and whenever it starts. At least we have a much better league this year since Butler and VCU appear to be 2 of the top 3 teams in the league this year. We are obviously the best team in the league. With St Louis, Temple and Charlotte's surprising start to the year we could see a lot of bids come tourney time.

Phil Martelli is going to have to kiss some other team's ass now. My guess it will be Richmond.

We will always be the Flagship of the Atlantic 10 Conference. Our dominance will live on.
After Xavier has moved on, and the A-10 is a thing of the past, people will look back and say "man, all I remember from that conference is Xavier kicking everyone's ass all the time".

They would win a trophy in the shape of an X for winning the conference. I like this idea.

What is fact is this: Once the exits occur, and assuming the A10 boils down to a 10 team conference, it will still be possible, if not likely, for UD to go 8-8 in league play every year.

VCU is the odds on favorite for being the new Flagship. Well have our A10 flags freshly cleaned to hand over to them. Unless they come along with. Then it's anybody's guess. SLU? Bonnie's make another run like last year? Richmond?
If you are the A10 commish, what schools are you looking at to replace the sudden defection of between 5 and 7 schools at the end of the season?

I know it won't happen, but it would thrill me to no end if UC joined the A-10 after X leaves for olympic sports and the MAC for football. I might never stop laughing if that happened.

Which will make it real awkward for you the next time you have to deal with TSA.
I didn't think if that scenario. Imagine Temple, UConn, and uc all going to the A10 and parking their football programs elsewhere. Man, you just brought a huge smile to my face.

After X leaves the A-10 I won't be looking back. But, whoever it is, they won't ever match X's dominance.
I'm with Vee. My vote is "Nobody." If being the flagship means winning 5 straight A10 titles and making it to the second weekend of the dance 4 out of 5 years, I say nobody will be the flagship of the A10 again in the foreseeable future.

I think VCU could do that. At least the winning 5 straight A-10 titles part (unfortunately probably starting this year).

The A-10 is one of the best things to ever happen to us. Any team that grabs the brass ring once we are gone is going to go far. You can be a National Program in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Memphis did great after everyone left them for dead in CUSA. For one of the teams that gets "left behind", it might be the greatest thing that has ever happened to them.
I like a lot of programs in the A-10. If you could kick four or five teams out and get down to a round robin it would be an exceptional league. But the league can't even get Fordham out. And that is pathetic.
I love the A-10 and what it has done for our program. I wish them well, and I will still follow the league. I think VCU could do very well there, as others have noted.
The Horizon lost Butler. They were the 11th conference last year, and they are 11th this year. When we were in that conference, it was around 11 too. It was great for us because we were the Kings. Without Butler some program may step up and do what we first did, and then Butler replicated. It isn't a bad spot to be in being King. I am rooting for Wright State to fill that void. They have a great arena and the City of Dayton deserves some Championship basketball. The Nutter Center rocks. We should play them a 2 for 1.
