ND's statement on the matter just made it worse:

Notre Dame Statement: Manti Te’o

On Dec. 26, Notre Dame coaches were informed by Manti Te’o and his parents that Manti had been the victim of what appears to be a hoax in which someone using the fictitious name Lennay Kekua apparently ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia. The University immediately initiated an investigation to assist Manti and his family in discovering the motive for and nature of this hoax. While the proper authorities will continue to investigate this troubling matter, this appears to be, at a minimum, a sad and very cruel deception to entertain its perpetrators.

Dennis Brown
University Spokesman | Assistant Vice President

Teo told stories of talking to her on the phone and her being in his actual physical presence. It's not a hoax when you tell people you've spoken and been with her.

If you're referring to the person 80% sure he knew, it was a friend of Tuiasosopo who said that. If he actually thought she died - I'm not saying he didn't know she was fake - what would there be to dispel? The South Bend tribune, which wrote that article on where/how Te'o and this 'girl' met, how they hung out in Hawaii, etc, said they were provided the information by Te'o's father. So either
A) Te'o's father was in on it
B) Te'o's father was not in on it and was just going by what his son told him

Either way, someone is lying. Te'o said in interviews he met her. He said she was the love of his life. Te'o himself is in numerous articles stated that he sat with her and held her hand. I thought it was ridiculous that he would not attend the 'love of his life's' funeral.

The state of sports journalism is awful. Thank god for Deadspin.

Agreed. Deadspin is just on another level, they are probably the only journalists who do any investigating.

Here are my theories: 1) Te'o is the biggest idiot/weirdo ever. Who would make the death of someone they've never met such a huge deal? 2) He's in on it, something happened where him and this person felt it necessary to 'kill off' this false character. 2a) He found out she was fake and they felt her fake death was a way out of the lie and embarrassment. 2b) The whole thing was fabricated since the beginning, possibly to hide a real relationship(possibly homosexual?).

I know that last theory is highly suggestive and built on little fact, but at this point nothing would surprise me.

EDIT: Also, Te'o's NFL marketability is completely gone. Maybe he can get sponsored by eHarmony if he's lucky.

Clay Travis makes some good points:
http://outkickthecoverage.com/manti-teos-fake-dead-girlfriend-breaks-the-internet.php

1. According to Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick, Mant'i Teo had a three year "exclusively online relationship."

If you believe there is a straight man on earth not currently in prison who has a three year exclusively online relationship, then you're a damn fool.

Period.

There's just no way this actually happens.

Especially for a college kid who happens to be the best player on a football mad campus.

It also conflicts with a South Bend Tribune story that included the following details about Te'o meeting his girlfriend in person:

"Lennay Kekua was a Stanford student and Cardinal football fan when the two exchanged glances, handshakes and phone numbers that fateful weekend three seasons ago.

She was gifted in music, multi-lingual, had dreams grounded in reality and the talent to catch up to them.

The plan was for Kekua to spend extensive time with the whole Te'o family when upwards of 40 of them came to South Bend in mid-November for ND's Senior Day date with Wake Forest.

'They started out as just friends,' Brian Te'o said. 'Every once in a while, she would travel to Hawaii, and that happened to be the time Manti was home, so he would meet with her there. But within the last year, they became a couple. And we came to the realization that she could be our daughter-in-law. Sadly, it won't happen now.'"

You have to read this article about the relationship. Much of the explication of the meeting is done without quotes. Which leaves us with two questions: a. Was Te'o telling this story to the reporter, in which case he fabricated the entire meeting? or b. Was his father telling this story? In which case, Te'o would be lying to his father about how he met his girlfriend.

Either way this story directly implicates Te'o in telling a lie about how he met his girlfriend, either to his father, the reporter, or Jack Swarbrick.

So Notre Dame's contention that Te'o never lied is 100% false.

2. Te'o never met his girlfriend in person.

I just can't get past this detail.

What's more, she purportedly canceled several face-to-face meetings with him. At some point if you're remotely intelligent -- or even just a horny college student -- don't you start to question a relationship when your online girlfriend won't meet you? Also, did Te'o and his girlfriend not Skype? (We know that Te'o Skyped because the South Bend Tribune story says that he Skype'd with his parents.) Did his girlfriend ever video chat with him? If not, wouldn't you find this pretty suspicious as well?) Did they video chat on iPhone? Is his girlfriend really not on Facebook? Are you really telling me that a straight football player has a relationship in this technological era and never asks for sexy pics of his girlfriend if they aren't meeting in person? (Somewhere Tiger Woods is shaking his head in disgust).

I mean, come on this story is just flat out unbelievable.

6) According to multiple sources inside the network, ESPN had the story, but was waiting on Te'o for a sit-down interview.

Per the Big Lead, ESPN had the story for ten days.

That would mean that ESPN first got wind of the story before the BCS title game.

Ouch.

7. Notre Dame encouraged Te'o to lie about the story.

This will be overshadowed, but once Notre Dame knew that the dead girlfriend story was a hoax on December 27th, it allowed the dead girlfriend hoax to be perpetuated through the BCS title game. In fact, AD Swarbrick said he told Te'o not to address the issue specifically if he was asked about it.

When he was asked about it at the BCS title pregame, Te'o said, "That event is well-documented and, you know, I think my team was always there for me and my family was always there for me....We all know about that and how I went through that and I don't think I need to say much about that."

They scheduled a press conference to unveil the thawed out beast. It was awesome. I was riveted. The thing came to a pinnacle. Either we had a real life specimen of Bigfoot, which would validate centuries of folklore......or the 2 idiots would have to come clean on the hoax.

The debate among teammates wasn't whether or not Manti actually knew this girl - it was clear that they had been in contact; no, players just didn't think that it was fair to call Lennay Kekua Manti's girlfriend, period (it is well-known on campus that he has had relations with other girls during his time at Notre Dame). They recognized what was going on for what it was - a terrible publicity stunt used to fuel Manti Te'o's Heisman campaign. In fact, many of the players privately commented that they didn't want the students to wear leis in support of Manti and wouldn't participate themselves - they cited that the team never responded so publicly to tragic events for other players. But there was also the feeling that Manti didn't deserve to benefit from publicity from the death of somebody he barely knew.

There's some crazy quotes in there from Te'o

SI: She was buried in California?
TE'O: She was always in California. Her family is from Hawaii but they live in California.
SI: Where did you meet her in California?
TE'O: She actually came to one of the games. She saw me at one of the games.

Te'o spoke of his "girlfriend" at least twice after learning she never existed:

Not once but twice after he supposedly discovered his online girlfriend of three years never even existed, Notre Dame All-American linebacker Manti Te'o perpetuated the heartbreaking story about her death.

An Associated Press review of news coverage found that the Heisman Trophy runner-up talked about his doomed love in a Web interview on Dec. 8 and again in a newspaper interview published Dec. 11. He and the university said Wednesday that he learned on Dec. 6 that it was all a hoax, that not only wasn't she dead, she wasn't real.

Thamel should probably just go ahead and quit. His credibility from now on is zero. Too bad, because I enjoyed him trying to crush Calipari.

Somehow, Calipari is connected to this.

People lie all the time. I've known people to make up relationships that they were supposedly in. They wanted a girfriend or boyfriend, but didn't have one, so they just told everyone else they had did one and pretended like it was true. I've known people to lie about jobs they've had, or schools they've gone to, or places they've gone to, or places they've lived, or people they've known, or women they've banged, or all kinds of crazy stuff.

I'm not saying it isn't absurd, or ridiculous, or wrong, or normal. I'm just saying that Te'o is hardly alone when it comes to lying. People lie all the time. People will talk about something that never happened as if it were completely true. There are probably half a million people that claim they were at Game Six of the 1986 World Series and vividly talk about it as if they actually were. Maybe they've even convinced themselves to a degree. Maybe they just like feeling more important or relevant or interesting than they actually are.

What makes this lie so great is how the media ate it up. They believed it. The story was too good to fact check, so they didn't. We haven't had a good hoax like this in awhile. With all due respect to the fake tragic passing of his fake girlfriend, I for one and thoroughly enjoying this. The other great sports hoax was the kid from out west who claimed he wsa being recruited by several major football schools, and actually held a press conference that many major media outlets attended. He committed to Cal. Cal had no idea who he was. It was great. This is the first good hoax we've had since then.

He has no chance at training camp. He's going to be hazed around the clock the entire time. I can only imagine it. By the time they get through with him I think we'll be able to call it even.

If they really wanted to take it to the extreme there would be no game that night.

You knew this was coming.

From one of the ESPN articles. This tends to lend credence to the idea that Notre Dame never planned to disclose any of this until they were forced:

"Dan Tudesco, a 2006 graduate who now works in public relations in New York, set up an online account at fundraising website indiegogo.com on Jan. 9 to solicit $5,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Inc. The initial pitch said donations would go to the society in memory of Lennay Kekua and in honor of Te'o, "two individuals who have been an inspiration to us through an iconic season."

Tudesco said he and three friends got the fundraising idea after seeing a video that went viral of Te'o holding his head in dismay during the Irish's 42-14 loss to Alabama in the national championship game.

The goal was to turn the loss -- and the player's sudden popularity -- into something positive.

I think we were all kind of disappointed in the result of the game ... and the Manti story was very inspirational," Tudesco told The Associated Press on Thursday.

Notre Dame took notice of Tudesco's tweets about the fund drive and sent a university videographer to shoot an interview with him. The video was posted on the Notre Dame athletics YouTube channel Tuesday.

Tudesco said he didn't believe Notre Dame was aware of the hoax when it promoted his fundraiser.

"It would surprise me that Notre Dame would want to promote this if they knew something like this was going on," Tudesco said.

However, Notre Dame officials said Wednesday that they became aware of the hoax on Dec. 26, nearly two weeks before the championship game. University spokesman Dennis Brown didn't immediately respond to a request seeking comment Thursday."

This insane story has provided some of the best comedy I've seen/read in a long time. Thank you ND and Teo for being a complete joke!

One of the best jokes or creative lines I've heard from the whole situation......."All those missed tackles in the National Championship was really Manti Teo hugging his girlfriend"

True. This Te'o lie is the worst since Jan Brady lied about her new boyfriend, George Glass.

Nice one. I was thinking of the Capt. Tuttle episode from M*A*S*H but yours applies much better.

At least Tuttle got credited at the end of that episode. Major Murdock, on the other hand...

There's a college football all-star game today in Carson, CA that's playing on ESPN2 right now. That's where Te'o's fake girlfriend's fake funeral took place.

Both teams pretended to observe a moment of silence for her prior to kick off.

Now we learn that Te'o was talking to a man pretending to be a woman on the phone for "Thousands of Hours"

Hopefully no one tells Manti about the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus

There is no way I believe Te'o is completely innocent in this whole thing.

Story takes another turn:

RONAIAH TUIASOSOPO "I'M GAY... I Think"

"I had romantic feelings for Manti Te'o"

Ronaiah also told McGraw that Te'o was "absolutely, unequivocally" not involved in carrying out the hoax.

This.

I'm not buying this Te'o naive/innocent/no knowledge thing either. And watching clips of that interview with Tuiasosopo, the guy is lying through the whole thing. All you gotta do is watch how the eyes keep averting. Body language don't lie, but words do.

My opinion is that Tuiasosopo is taking the fall for his buddy. Not a crime so he won't face any charges. And if Mantai is so upset, how come he's not pressing a fraud charge and why did he keep foisting the lie on everyone for 4 months?

Where the hell is Mike Wallace when you need him?

By the way, after this post, I'm sick of this whole thing and done with it.

I think you'd have to be naive as he claims to be to think he was completely clueless about the whole thing.
